Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Answer Q. 1 or 2, 3 or 4, 5 or 6, 7 or 8.
3. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
4. Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
5. Use of Design Data Book is permitted.

1. a) Design a flywheel for the single cylinder four stroke I.C. Engine developing a power of 16
60 kW at 750 rpm. The work done during the power stroke is 1.35 times the work done
during the whole cycle. The coefficient of fluctuation of speed is 8%.

b) Derive the expression for fluctuation in energy of the flywheel. 4

OR

2. a) Design a hydrodynamic Journal Bearing for the generator shaft. The diameter of journal 14
shaft is 65 mm and the speed is 1500 rpm. The radial load on the journal is 2.5 kN.

b) Explain the following : 6

i) Specific Dynamic load capacity of antifriction Bearing.
ii) L10 Life of bearing.

iii) Average life of bearing.

3. a) Design a chain drive to transmit the power of 15 kW from one shaft to another. The driving 16
shaft is rotating at 750 rpm and driven shaft should rotate at 250 rpm. The drive is operating
for 8 hrs/day. The load factor for this drive is 1.5.

b) Compare chain drive with Flat belt drive. 4

OR

4. a) Design a V - Belt drive to transmit the power from electric motor to the reciprocating 14
compressor. The electric motor is rated to deliver the power of 11 kW at 750 rpm and
compressor shaft should run at 250 rpm. The drive is operating for 16 hrs/day and it is
subjected to light shock loads.

b) Explain following terms related to the belt drive. 6

i) Slip in Belt

ii) Crown on pulley

iii) Centrifugal Tension

5. a) Design a Bevel gear drive to transmit the power of 8 kW between two shafts. The driving 16
shaft is rotating at 800 rpm and the driven shaft should rotate at 400 rpm. The included
angle between the shafts is 75º. The drive is operating for 8 hrs/day and it is subjected to
light shock loads.

b) Explain the term bevel factor in case of bevel gears. 4

6. a) Design a Helical gear drive with Helix angle of 19º to transmit the power of 18 kW from 16
one shaft to another. The driving shaft is rotating at 1200 rpm and driven shaft should rotate
at 400 rpm. The drive is operating for 16 hrs/day and it is subjected to moderate shock loads.

b) State the advantages and disadvantages of worm gear drives. 4

7. a) Design a wire rope, sheave and drum to hoist the load of 110 kN through the height of 40 16
meters with the velocity of 15 meters per minute. The final velocity should be achieved
within 6 seconds.

b) Differentiate between Clutches and brakes. 4
