Hemodialysis is a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial

kidney, or a dialyzer, are used to clean your blood. To get your blood into the dialyzer, the
doctor needs to make an access, or entrance, into your blood vessels. This is done with minor
surgery, usually to your arm.

Importance of hemodialysis

It is important when a person kidneys have stopped working and it works as a artificial kidney to
save him

 Travel to a dialysis center may be required three times a week


 Permanent access required; usually in the arm for adults and the neck/chest area
for children
 Strict renal diet and fluid restrictions are required
 Access sites run the risk for infection
