Lesson objectives:
• To explore tropical words and in particular, fungy

• You should complete your work on paper, photograph it and send the photograph as evidence of your work, or you can
write directly onto a MS Word document or powerpoint and submit the work.
• Make sure you save your work regularly.
• Make sure your work is clearly labelled with your name, the date and the lesson objective.
Tasks
Complete all the tasks in order

Complete your work by either

writing/drawing on paper, take a
photograph and submit or use MS word or
powerpoint and submit.
Task 1 – map activity
Task 1: Use your research skills to answer the below questions

Locate Costa Rica. Name the sea on the east and the ocean on the west. Costa Rica is in central America bordering
Nicaragua to the north and panama to the south, the carribean sea to the east and the north pacific ocean to the west.

Unravel this keyword and give its definition:

Noispoedcmoit decomposition= the process where dead organisms break down into simpler organisms

True or false: Certain areas of the Amazon receive 1000 cm of rainfall per year. true

Find the median tree height:

60m 45m 39m 33m 52m
45m
Task 2 – choice task
Task 2: Either watch the attached clip or use google to research the answers to the below questions

The Green Planet - Tropical Worlds

The programme starts in Costa Rica. How much sunlight is received by the forest floor? Less than 2%

When an old tree falls to the forest floor, there is a rush of plants to take its place. Describe how the following plants have adapted to reach the sunlight:

Monstera - the holes in the leaf

Vines – climb on other plants

Balsa - its evergreen

Outline the process of photosynthesis: the leaves of a plant take in light and co2 so that they can use it to grow and they eject oxygen as waste.

What is leucoagaricus and what does it do? It’s a fungus that produses nutrient rich hyphal swellings which leaf-cutter ants feed on.

How does the balsa tree ensure reproduction in its relatively short lifespan? They have hundreds of long seed pods which with help of the wind scatter seeds everywhere which then grow into balsa trees

What are some of the striking characteristics of the Rafflesia? Its grows to be 3 feet long and is parasitic, attaching itself to another plant to feed off of its nutrients.

The tallest tree in the tropics is called the dipterocarp. What feature allows it to grow so tall without falling over? They are hardwood and they have a 60cm trunk diameter,

Why is the Poison Arrow tree at risk of being poisoned? It has cerebra Odollam in it.

What is Chimpanzee Fire, (found in the Congo)? The glow (bioluminescence) that some fungi have on decaying wood

The 7 hour flower produces nourishment for which animal?

Give one example of how tropical rainforests are under threat

HT: Can you add any other facts that you have found out?

Task 3 – research Task
Task 3 - Further research - find out about projects aimed at
reforesting the Amazon. What has been done? How successful have
they been? You could start by looking at the Porto Vehlo region in
Brazil with Rainforest Action
(https://www.reforestaction.com/en/blog/brazil-results-our-
amazon-reforestation-project)

planting 120000 trees on 100 hectares of the amazon rainforest, they

completed their goal of planting this many trees, they have also helped
farmers with this project by providing them with nutrient rich soil provided by
the trees.
