Sacraments of Initiation
- the Sacraments of Initiation are:
1. Baptism
2. Confirmation
3. Eucharist
- they are the foundation of the Christian life.
- they are closely related-in each we receive the
Holy Spirit and His gifts.
- each has its special symbols and effects.
Primary effects of the Sacraments of Initiation
1. Baptism
- beginning of new life in Christ.
2. Confirmation
- strengthening us to live more fully Christ’s
call to serve.
3. Eucharist
- nourish us to live as Christ’s disciples as we
journey through life
History of Baptism
1. Water in te Old Testament
- creation, the flood, red sea.
2. New Testament
- Baptism of Jesus, ascension
3. Baptism
- first sacrament celebrated in the early
church (Acts of the Apostles)
Effects of Baptism
1. Welcome into the Christian community
2. Forgiveness of sins
- original sin and any other sins we have
committed.
3. Born into new life
- marked by the sacramental character which
is indelible and cannot be repeated.
4. Reception of the Holy Spirit
5. Necessary for salvation
- baptism of water, blood and desire.
Baptismal rite
1. Essential symbol
- blessed water poured over the person (or
the immersion in the water) and the words, “I
baptize you in the name of the Father, and the
Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
2. Minister
- priest or deacon or anyone in an emergency.
3. Symbols
- baptismal promises, candle, white robe,
anointing with Chrism (a sign of the Holy Spirit)
received and moves you closer to God.
- “The reception of Confirmation is necessary to
complete Baptismal grace.”
Effects of Confirmation
2 primary effects:
- bond with Church is strengthened
- enriched with our pouring of Holy Spirit
Impacts of the Sacraments on a person
- united more firmly in Christ
- deeper participation in the Church
- strengthened to spread the faith
- increased gifts of the Holy Spirit
Who can be confirmed:
- every baptized person, who has not been
confirmed, should be confirmed.
Requirements:
- reached an age of reason
- make profession of faith
- state your intention to receive the
sacrament
- accept their obligation to profess Christ in
both the Church and the world.
Eucharist
- the spiritual center of the Church
- we remember what God has done for us
through Jesus Christ as we gather on Sundays
- celebrate the eucharist as a part of other
sacramental celebrations
- eucharist is the “Heart and Summit of the life
of the Church”
Eucharist a gift from God, we accept that the
Eucharist is:
- a gift of thanksgiving and praise to the Father
- identical to Jesus death on the Cross
- sacrificial memorial of Christ and his body
- Christ made present by the power of his word
and the Holy Spirit
- a true sacrifice
- a reveation of thos truths to us by Jesus
- offered for the living and the dead to obtain
spiritual and material benefits.
Transubstantiation
- unique change of the entire substance of the
Eucharist bread and wine into the Body and
Blood of Christ.
Catholics believe:
- the whole Christ is present under each and
every part of the Eucharist
- the whole Christ is present if the parts are
divided
- the presence of Christ is sacramental
- the presence of Christ endures as long as what
remains appears to be bread and wine,
recognizable as such and uncorrupted.

Benefits of regular reception of Eucharist

- increases our closeness to Christ
- reinforces the unity of the Church as the
Mystical Body of Christ
- removes sin and preserves us from sin
- diminishes sinful selfishness
