Introduction
Verily all praise is due to Allāh. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and His
forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Almighty Allāh from the evil of our passions
and the worst of our deeds. Indeed, whomsoever Allāh guides, no one can
mislead him, and whomsoever Allāh puts astray, no one can guide him. And I
testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh alone, with no
partner. And I testify that Muhammad  is His slave and messenger.

The following is a collection of selected aĥādīth from the sayings of our beloved
Prophet Muhammad , the teacher and the leader of all humanity, collected by
the slave servant of Allāh, Abu Al-‘Abādilah, Muhammad Sayed Adly. This
collection is intended to be used by the students of Islāmic schools in America.
I did my best to select short aĥādīth, which make it easier on the students to
memorize. It is written in a manner that is easy to read, along with some
explanation. I did my best to make this collection cover certain subjects, such as
‘aqīdah (belief), ‘ibādah (worship), akhlāq (behavior), and mu‘āmalāh (dealing
with each other). Each ĥadīth is accompanied by an English translation, a
discussion of the main subject matter, definition of key vocabulary, and Exercise
for the application of the knowledge acquired. There are four main objectives
for the study of each ĥadīth. As a result of studying this book the student should
be able to:
1. Read the forty aĥādīth in Arabic and English,
2. Understand key vocabulary,
3. Explain the main subject matter discussed in each ĥadīth, and
4. Memorize the forty aĥādīth.
I have only included in this collection what is authentic, and I do not claim
perfection. I pray that Allāh will help all of us clean our intentions and make
them sincerely for His pleasure, to my benefit and as well as to your benefit, in
this life and in the hereafter. Please bring to my attention any mistakes you may
find in this work, so that they can be corrected in the next edition. I beg Allāh’s
forgiveness and ask Him to conceal my shortcomings in this work.

Sincerely yours,

Muhammad Sayed Adly

1. Intention precedes deeds and sayings.

2. Every person will be judged according his intention.
3. Sincerity is required for actions to be accepted.
4. Good intention doesn’t make a wrong deed correct.

The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “If someone

tries to introduce into this faith of ours (Islām) something which is
not a part of it, it is to be rejected.”

Al-Bukhārī

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The religion of Islām is built on submission and following,

not invention and addition.

Narrated Ŭmar bin Al-Khaŧŧāb, may Allāh be pleased with him,

that:

Allāh’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Do not exaggerate

in praise of me just as the Christians exaggerated in the praise of
Jesus, son of Mary. I am but a slave, so call me Allāh’s slave and
His Messenger.”
Al-Bukhārī

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

to shirk.
5. We should be careful and learn from other people’s
mistakes.
6. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the slave
of Allāh, and His Messenger and is the best of all His
creation.

the exaggeration of their prophets.
8. The Messengers are the best of Allāh’s creation.
9. One of the things that caused the Christians to go astray is
their exaggeration of their prophet Jesus.

Allāh’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “None of you
becomes a believer till he loves me more than his children, his
father, and all mankind.”
Muslim

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Faith or īmān consists of sayings, actions, and belief. This

faith can be increased by obedience of Allāh, and will
decrease as a result of disobeying Allāh.
2. Loving the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is
part of īmān.
3. It is necessary that we make the Prophet’s (peace be upon
him) love dearer to us than the love of anything. Whoever
loves the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will
follow his Sunnah, and he will not invent anything in the
religion.

Exercise:

1. Why is it so important for us to love the Prophet even

more than we love ourselves?
2. In what ways do we demonstrate our love for the
Prophet?
3. How can we love the Prophet more than our fathers or any
of our family members?

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Īmān (faith) comes in different degrees. Some believers

are stronger than others.

17
2. Islām urges love for other Muslims.
3. The believer always wishes the good for the believers.
4. The believer is always beneficial for others.

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. A believer lives in this life as if he is a prisoner, therefore

he does not break the limits of Allāh.

19
2. A believer cannot do everything he desires.
3. A believer does the halāl things only.
4. The believers face hardship and difficulty in their lives.
5. Jannah for the kāfir is this life. Therefore, there will be no
Jannah for him in the hereafter.
6. The main worry of a kāfir is fulfilling his lusts, and he does
not care about halāl or harām.
7. A believer has to be patient with the hardships, and the
temptations of this life. And for him in the hereafter, inshā
Allāh, will be the Jannah.

Words to know: dun-yā (this life/world) sijn (jail, prison)

Exercise:

1. Explain why this ĥadīth is true to you.

2. Provide examples of how this world can be a prison or a
paradise.
3. Although this world is like a prison for a believer, it is
relative. It all depends on how you live your life. Give 3-5
examples of ways to enjoy life while not disobeying Allāh.
4. Why is it better to be in prison now and have Jannah later?

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The believers are highly concerned about maintaining and

strengthening the ties of brotherhood.
2. The believers in their mutual love and assistance and
solidarity, are like a brick building.
3. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the best

On the authority of Abu Masood Uqbah ibn Aamr, may Allāh be

pleased with him, who said:

The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) said, “From the

words of the previous prophets that the people still find are: If you
feel no shame, then do as you wish.”
Al- Bukhari

Lessons to be learned from the hadith:

1. One of the most important characteristics that a person

can possess is ĥayā (modesty).
2. All of the earlier prophets taught the importance of
modesty to their followers.
3. Modesty or shame is the characteristic that keeps a person
from committing sin.
4. If a person has no shame, he will commit any evil act.
5. Modesty is a part of faith.
6. We must first be modest in the sight of Allāh - to be
ashamed to commit acts that are displeasing to Him.
7. We should not be ashamed to perform good deeds, but
only those deeds that are evil.

26
8. Modesty should be taught at an early age and developed
throughout our lives.
9. Having ĥayā is a sign that a person has a healthy heart.

Words to Know:

tas-ta-ĥ (you feel shame) faŝ-naą (do, act) shi’ta (you wish)

Exercise:

1. Why is ĥayā (modesty) such an important characteristic in

Islām?
2. What are two reasons that a person may be shy to
perform good deeds? Why is it wrong to be shy to commit
good deeds?
3. Identify 3 ways that can be used to develop modesty in
children.

hands, and if he is unable to do so, he should prohibit the same
with his tongue, if he is unable even to do this, he should at least
consider it as bad in his heart. This is the lowest degree of faith.”
Muslim

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. One of the main responsibilities of the individual Muslim is

to change the evil.
2. A Muslim is not supposed to participate in an evil deed.
3. Muslims are different in their abilities concerning changing
the evil deed.
4. Faith is in ranks. It increases through obedience to Allāh,
and decreases through disobedience to Allāh.
5. The true believer will object to the evil, at least with his
heart so he will stay away from the evil deed as well as the
doors leading to the evil deeds, otherwise he will expose
his faith to the possibility of being lost.

34
Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. To confirm and affirm that Allāh created al-Jannah

(Paradise), and An-Nār (hellfire), and that they are real,
true, and that both of them are in existence now.
2. Lusts and desires for ĥarām things is a means to hellfire.
3. Patience and dislike of ĥarām things are means to
Paradise.

Words to know:

Jannah is surrounded by hardships (and what is meant by
hardships).
2. Mention some examples of hardships and desires that we

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me: "Recite the name of
Allāh, the Exalted, and eat with your right hand, and eat from what
is closer to you.”
Agreed upon

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The great concern of the Messenger of Allāh (peace be

upon him) to teach the children the discipline of Al-Islām.
2. The necessity of saying bismillāh before eating.
3. The necessity of using the right hand when eating.
4. It is not the proper manner to eat from the middle of the
plate. A person should eat from that which is closest to
him.

Words to know: ya-mīn (right) kul (eat)

ya-līk (closer to you)

Exercise:

1. Mention three additional etiquettes we should practice

related to eating and food.
2. What happens if one does not say bismillah before eating?
3. Can a Muslim say “subhana Allāh” instead of “bismillah”
before eating? Why?

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The human being in general is limited in his abilities

regardless of how much taqwā (fear of Allāh) he has.
2. Human beings are different in their ranks concerning their
obedience and disobedience to Allāh.
3. It is necessary for the Muslim to quit evil-doing and to
hasten to repentance.
4. Allāh’s mercy is so great.
5. Repentance from all sins is a must.
6. A Muslim should not give up hope at any time of Allāh’s
mercy and forgiveness.
7. A Muslim should repeat his tawbah (repentance) for any
and every time he does something wrong.

purifying one’s intention solely for Allāh’s sake is very
important.
2. Good deeds are required in the same way that intentions
are required.
3. It is important for the Muslim to hold fast to the practice

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Islām forbids transgression on others by any means.

2. A Muslim is not supposed to disturb other Muslims,
neither is he supposed to transgress against them.
3. Islām urges us to stay away from forbidden acts.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) that:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The sign of a hypocrite is

three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. Whenever he promises,
he always breaks it (his promise). If you trust him, he proves to be

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Hypocrisy is a serious disease that Islām warns us against.

2. Hypocrisy has symptoms, of which the most famous are
lying, breaking the promise, and betraying the trust.
3. Islām teaches us truthfulness, being trustworthy, and

that:

The Prophet of Allāh said: “When three of you are together two of
you must not converse privately ignoring the third, lest he should
be grieved.”
Muslim

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Islām teaches us the proper way of discussion and talking

to each other.
2. It is not permissible for two people to whisper and have a
private conversation in the presence of a third party. A
similar case is that of talking in a different language not
understood by the third person.
3. Islām cares for people’s feelings.
4. Islām forbids all things that cause destruction and
weakening of the ties of brotherhood.

Words to know: tha-lā-tha-tan (three)

ya-ta-nā-jā (converse privately)
yuĥ-zi-nuh (grieved)

Exercise:

1. List three reasons why it would be considered as ill-

mannered for two people to whisper in the presence of a
third person.
2. What should you do if a fellow Muslim arrives and greets
you while you are in a private conversation with a friend?

Al-Bukhārī

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The prohibition of cursing dead people.

2. We should not disturb the living by cursing their dead.
3. Every human being is responsible for his actions.
4. We must leave the affairs of the people to Allāh, for He is

lu aj-ri fā-ĭ-lih.
Ra-wā-hu mus-lim

Narrated ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr Al-Ansārī (may Allāh be pleased with

him) that:

The Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “One who

guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer.”
Muslim

105
Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Islām can be spread through daăwah and invitation.

2. The Prophet of Allāh (peace be upon him) was a dāĭyah, a
caller to Allāh.
3. Islām encourages daăwah.
4. Whosoever invites others, to do good will gain a great
reward.
5. If one cannot accomplish a good deed alone, one should
direct others to one who can.

Words to know: khayr (goodness) ajr (reward)

Exercise:

1. Identify three acts of good that you can teach another

person with the intention of gaining some reward from
Allāh.
2. If one guides someone to do good, then he receives a
reward for the good that is done. Explain the result of one
guiding someone to do an evil act.
3. Why is the job of a Muslim who works as a printer for the
media or advertising company a very serious job?

Ra-wā-hu mus-lim

Narrated Jābir (may Allāh be pleased with him) that:

Allāh Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Between a man and

kufr and shirk” is the abandonment of ŝalāh.”
Muslim

108
Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The ŝalāh in al-Islām has a great position.

2. Whoever neglects the ŝalāh, has committed Shirk.
Whoever abandons the prayer has committed kufr, or
disbelief.
3. A man’s faith consists of sayings, deeds, and belief. This
faith can be increased through obedience to Allāh and
decreases as a result of disobedience to Allāh. One of the
main things to strengthen your īmān is performing the
ŝalāh.

Words to know: bay-na (between)

tar-ku (abandonment, neglect)

Exercise:

1. Explain three benefits of ŝalāh. Support your answer with

ĥadīth or verses from the Qur’ān.
2. Is there any situation wherein a person can be excused
from making ŝalāh? If yes explain these situations.

Mutta-fa-qun ă-layh

Narrated ‘Abdullāh Bin Mas’ūd (may Allāh be pleased with him)

that:

He asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): Which action is most

favorite with Allāh the Almighty? He answered, “Performing the
Ŝalah (or offering Prayers) in time.” I asked, “Thereafter?” He
said, “Good treatment of parents.” I submitted, “Then which
next?” He said, “Fighting or struggling in the way of Allāh.”
Agreed upon

Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. The great concern of the companions was to learn their

dīn. Consequently, they used to ask the Prophet questions
concerning the things they did not know.
2. Good deeds are graded in ranks one above another. This
means that some of the good deeds are rewarded more
than others.
3. Praying the prayer as soon as it comes is one of the most
beloved deeds, and dearest to Allāh.
4. Islām commands obedience to the parents and
benevolence towards them.

111
5. Being good to your parents is rewarded more than jihād
and dearer to Allāh.
6. Jihād in the cause of Allāh is one of the most beloved
deeds by Allāh.

Words to know: sa-al-tu (I asked) thumma (then)

wā-li-dayn (parents)

Exercise:

1. Explain why the three deeds mentioned in the ĥadīth are

very important in Islām.
2. Do all forms of jihad involve fighting with weapons?
3. Is it a righteous act to obey your parents when they ask
you to do something that is forbidden in Islām?

Narrated Abu Al-Ja'd (may Allāh be pleased with him) that:

The Prophet of Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever leaves

three Jumuăh (prayers) consecutively considering it not very
important, Allāh will seal his heart.”
Ahmad

113
Lessons to be learned from the ĥadīth:

1. Jumuăh in Al-Islām is very important.

2. A Muslim is not supposed to neglect the obligatory acts.
3. Acting on a sin will cause the hardening of the hearts.
4. The importance of the heart in the life of the believer.
5. Islām gives permission to miss Jumuăh for a religious
excuse.

Words to know: ju-mu-ăh (Friday prayer) ŧa-ba-ă (sealed)

Exercise:

1. Write a brief paragraph explaining the importance for the

Muslim male to attend Jumuăh prayers.
2. Is attending Jumuăh prayers obligatory for women?
3. Who is excused from attending Jumuăh prayers?
