SDG 8 - Decent work and economic growth

What is SDG 8?
 Also known as Sustainable Development Goal 8
 aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive
employment and decent work for all

Why is it important?
 recognises the importance of sustained economic growth and high levels of economic productivity
for the creation of well-paid quality jobs, as well as resource efficiency in consumption and
production.
 It calls for opportunities for full employment and decent work for all alongside the eradication of
forced labour, human trafficking and child labour
 Promotes labour rights and safe and secure working environments
Example: The COVID-19 pandemic has considerably impacted employment opportunities in countries
around the world. Many have lost their jobs because of it. Through the SDG 8, those people will have a job
legally.
What is the target?
Problem: The UN explains: Roughly half the world’s population still lives on the equivalent of about US$2 a
day. And in too many places, having a job doesn’t guarantee the ability to escape from poverty. This slow
and uneven progress requires us to rethink and retool our economic and social policies aimed at
eradicating poverty.
Solution: Thus, the UN has defined 12 Targets and 17 Indicators for SDG 8. Targets specify the goals and
Indicators represent the metrics by which the world aims to track whether these Targets are achieved.
