PROCEDURE FOR WATER COLLECTION FROM THE TAP

To collect a sample from the tap:

a) Select a tap that is supplying water from a service pipe directly connected with the main.

b) Remove from the tap any ___Attachment____, such as filters, aerators, flow directors, or
screens that may cause splashing.

c) Turn on the tap or let at _____Maximum_____flow rate and let the water flow for __2-3__
minutes to clean the service lines. If tap cleanliness is questionable, choose another tap.

d) Disinfect the faucet (inside and outside) by applying a solution of ___Sodium Hypochlorite ___ to
faucet.

e) Disinfect the faucet again by ____Flaming______. Note that this step is not applicable to
plastic faucets.

f) Let water run for additional 2 to 3 min after treatment.

g) After 2-3 minutes of flushing, reduce water flow to permit filling bottle without splashing.

h) Open the sterilized sampling bottle. Untie the string of the protective paper cover and unscrew
cap. Hold the cap with the protective paper cover facing _____down________to avoid
contamination. Do not place cap down on any surface.

i) Fill the bottle, avoid touching the mouth of the bottle to the tap during filling. Fill the bottle up the
shoulder or leave at least 2.5 cm air space to facilitate ___mixing___ by shaking prior to
analysis.

j) Tightly screw the cap together with the protective paper cover on the bottle. Secure cover with
string.

k) Write the __date______and ____time, place ___ of sampling, name of collector, water sampling
point code on a masking tape.

l) Store the bottle. Place the sampling bottle in a cooler with ice or ice gel pack keeping the samples
at ______<10°_____ Celcius. Do not submerge the bottle in ice water during storage and transport.

m) Transport the water sample to the examining water laboratory immediately within _____6___
hours after collection under proper storage condition at < 8 degrees Celcius. Keep the samples
during transport in an ice chest/box with sufficient ice or ice gel pack.

Maintain samples at <8OC. Do not ___submerge_______

For HPC analysis, samples exceeding __6____ hours from collection to analysis shall be rejected.
For coliform analysis, samples exceeding __24___ hours from the time of collection to analysis
shall be rejected.
