B HOW TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
C Do you have a good relationship with your neighbors? Do you
know their names? Are you considerate of one another? It’s
D important to get on well with your neighbors, isn’t it? This helps to
make a happier and safer community. According to a survey by
E 5 Nextdoor, a social network for neighbors, 67% of homeowners said
they felt safer when they get along with their neighbors. There are
F four ways you can become a better neighbor.

G GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

If your neighbors have just moved in, introduce yourself. Give them some local tips, like what time the garbage
10 truck arrives. You might also help them move boxes or give them a welcome gift.

KEEP COMMON AREAS CLEAN

S.? Depending on where you live, you may share common areas like lawns, hallways, entrances, or yards with your
neighbors. You’re usually required to keep these areas clear of trash or any personal items. If you share a lawn,
e you could agree to share responsibility for cutting the grass.
15 You should also look after your own yard. Clear up any leaves or large weeds, and cut any tree branches if they
grow into your neighbor’s yard.

KEEP NOISE LEVELS LOW

Neighbors are supposed to keep noise to a minimum if they live close to each other. Three common issues related
to noise nuisance are:
20 • Dogs: If you’re allowed to have a dog, keep it under control. If your dog barks a lot at night, leave it inside. If
your neighbor can still hear it, you may need to enroll your dog in a training course to change its behavior.
• Repairs or house work: Most towns and cities have specific rules about when you can use loud machinery. In
general, you’re not allowed to do any loud house work early in the morning or in the evening.
• Parties: If you’re having a party, let your neighbors know in advance. Tell them what time the party will start
25 and end. Of course, you could always invite them.

JOIN A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION

If your community has a neighborhood watch, volunteer for a few hours every month. A neighborhood watch
helps to prevent burglars from breaking into houses. This is also a great opportunity to meet other neighbors.
By making small efforts to get along with your neighbors, your community can become a happier and safer area
30 to live in.
