DRUGS:

Drugs are substances that alter a person's mental or physical state. They can affect the way your
brain works, how you feel and behave, your understanding, and your senses. This makes them
unpredictable and dangerous, especially for young people. Drug effects vary from person to
person and from drug to drug.
Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of certain chemicals to create pleasurable effects
on the brain. There are over (190 million) drug users around the world and the problem has been
increasing at alarming rates, especially among young adults under the age of 30.
Drug addiction has become one of the most serious problems in the contemporary world. All the
societies are trying hard to resolve it but they have had very little success as yet. Drug addicts are
a neglected section of society that needs special attention. If these people are not taken care of,
they may not only harm themselves but cause damage to the socio-cultural norms of society.
Social Welfare Department has established a Drug Rehabilitation Center for the rehabilitation of
addicts.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF DRUGS:

 Good Drugs.
The term Good Drugs is used for Medicinal drug which is used to promote Healing,
Cure diseases, control or slow down the progression of diseases, prevent diseases,
decrease complication, or reduce excessive harmful activity in the body.
 Bad Drugs.
The term Bad Drugs is used for the chemicals such as Alcohol, Tobacco, Cocaine,
Marijuana, etc. These chemicals are illegal substances of abuse and a variety of man-
made or natural environmental toxins.

Examples:
 Alcohol
 Tobacco
 Cocaine from coca
 Opium and opioids from poppy plants
 Hashish marijuana from cannabis
 Synthetic drugs such as heroin, ecstasy, and LSD.

EXTENT OF THE ISSUE:

According to UN estimates, a few million people in the country are drug users. Cannabis is the
most used drug. The rate of injection drug abuse has also increased significantly in Pakistan,
sparking fears of an HIV epidemic
A 2013 report on drugs by the United Nations Office On Drugs And Crime (UNODC) stated that
almost 6.7 million people are taking drugs in Pakistan. The report also revealed that people from
the age of 15 to 64 use prescription drugs for non-medical purposes.
 According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Pakistan has 6.7 million
drug users. Almost 2 million of these are addicts, amongst the highest numbers for any
country in the world. According to a research article published in 2020 in Elsevier, the
first step towards drug addiction starts with smoking. Researchers also state that drug
usage in movies also influences the behavior of drug consumption among university
students.[
 The UNODC calculates that more than 800,000 Pakistanis between the ages of 15 and 64
use heroin regularly. It is also estimated that up to 44 tons of processed heroin are
consumed annually in Pakistan.
 Abuse Cannabis and Heroin are extremely cheap and easy to get in Pakistan.
 Pakistan's illegal drug trade is believed to generate up to $2 billion a year.
 In Pakistan, the total number of drug addicts as per a UN report is 7.6 million, 78% of
whom are male, while the remaining 22% are female. The number of these addicts is
increasing at the rate of 40,000 per year, making Pakistan one of the most drug-affected
countries in the world.
 The number of injection drug users in Punjab has also increased sharply in recent years.
In 2007, Pakistan had an estimated 90,000 injecting drug users, but the number had risen
to around 500,000 by 2014. This increase has also been accompanied by an increase in
HIV positivity. According to research, in 2005, about 11 percent of Pakistani drug users
were HIV positive. That number had risen to 40 percent in 2011.
 In 2012 and 2013, UNODC in collaboration with the Ministry of Narcotics Control, the
U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement
Affairs (INL), and other national stakeholders conducted a national survey on drug use to
estimate the extent and patterns of drug use in Pakistan. The overall results of the survey
revealed that approximately 6 percent of the population – 9 percent of the adult male
population and 2.9 percent of the adult female population - equivalent to 6.7 million
people - had used a substance other than alcohol and tobacco in the preceding year.

This year the World Drug Report 2022:

revealed an estimated 284 million people worldwide had used drugs in 2020. Cannabis remains
by far the world’s most-used drug, and the report also notes an increase in the use of
amphetamines. Globally, the report estimates that 11.2 million people worldwide injected drugs
during the period of the study. Around half of this number were living with hepatitis C, 1.4
million were living with HIV, and 1.2 million were living with both.

CANABIS AND MARIJUANA:

Marijuana weed, pot, dope, grass. They’re different names for the same drug that comes from the
cannabis plant. You can smoke it, vape it, drink it, or eat it. Most folks use marijuana for
pleasure and recreation. But a growing number of doctors prescribe it for specific medical
conditions and symptoms.
People often use the words “cannabis” and “marijuana” interchangeably, but they don’t mean the
same thing.
 The word “cannabis” refers to all products derived from the plant Cannabis sativa.
 The cannabis plant contains about 540 chemical substances.
The word “marijuana” refers to parts of or products from the plant Cannabis sativa that contain
substantial amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the substance that’s primarily
responsible for the effects of marijuana on a person’s mental state. Some cannabis plants contain
very little THC. Under U.S. law, these plants are considered “industrial hemp” rather than
marijuana.
 About 7 million Pakistanis are involved in taking Drugs, amongst which 4 million use
Cannabis while 2.7 million use Opioids.

LARGEST PRODUCTION OF CANNABIS:

Paraguay is the largest producer of pressed marijuana in the world, which it exports to
different countries in South America at a very low price since it is a poor quality product and in
many cases toxic because it rots during the process, or because it directly They apply chemical
products so that it does not smell during the trip. The crops are mainly concentrated in the
departments of Alto Paraná, Amambay, Caaguazú, Caazapá, Canindeyú, Concepción, Itapúa,
and San Pedro, and for a few years, they have also legally exported medical cannabis to the
USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe. In October 2019, the cultivation of industrial hemp was
also authorized, which is why Paraguay is currently among the largest producers of cannabis in
all its forms.

 Causes:
Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a disease that affects a person's brain and
behavior and leads to an inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or medicine.
Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and nicotine also are considered drugs. When you're
addicted, you may continue using the drug despite the harm it causes.
Drug addiction can start with the experimental use of a recreational drug in social situations,
and, for some people, drug use becomes more frequent. For others, particularly with opioids,
drug addiction begins when they take prescribed medicines or receive them from others who
have prescriptions.
The risk of addiction and how fast you become addicted varies by drug. Some drugs, such as
opioid painkillers, have a higher risk and cause addiction more quickly than others.
As time passes, you may need larger doses of the drug to get high. Soon you may need the drug
just to feel good. As your drug use increases, you may find that it's increasingly difficult to go
without the drug. Attempts to stop drug use may cause intense cravings and make you feel
physically ill. These are called withdrawal symptoms.
Help from your healthcare provider, family, friends, support groups, or an organized treatment
program can help you overcome your drug addiction and stay drug-free.

Like many mental health disorders, several factors may contribute to the development of drug
addiction. The main factors are:

Environment:
Environmental factors, including your family's beliefs and attitudes and exposure to a peer
group that encourages drug use, seem to play a role in initial drug use.

Genetics:
Once you've started using a drug, the development into addiction may be influenced by
inherited (genetic) traits, which may delay or speed up the disease progression.

Risk factors:
People of any age, sex, or economic status can become addicted to a drug. Certain factors can
affect the likelihood and speed of developing an addiction:

 Family history of addiction:

Drug addiction is more common in some families and likely involves an increased risk
based on genes. If you have a blood relative, such as a parent or sibling, with alcohol or
drug addiction, you're at greater risk of developing a drug addiction.
 Mental health disorder:
If you have a mental health disorder such as depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), or post-traumatic stress disorder, you're more likely to become
addicted to drugs. Using drugs can become a way of coping with painful feelings, such as
anxiety, depression, and loneliness, and can make these problems even worse.

 Peer pressure:
Peer pressure is a strong factor in starting to use and misuse drugs, particularly for
young people.
 Lack of family involvement:
Difficult family situations or lack of a bond with your parents or siblings may increase the
risk of addiction, as can a lack of parental supervision.

 Early use:
Using drugs at an early age can cause changes in the developing brain and increase the
likelihood of progressing to drug addiction.

 Taking a highly addictive drug:

Some drugs, such as stimulants, cocaine, or opioid painkillers, may result in faster
development of addiction than other drugs. Smoking or injecting drugs can increase the
potential for addiction. Taking drugs considered less addicting — so-called "light drugs"
— can start you on a pathway of drug use and addiction.

 Drug Addiction Throughout The World:

More than 35 million people around the world now suffer from drug addiction, according to the
latest annual report on the scourge, from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) which
also analyzes the far-reaching impact of the coronavirus pandemic on global drug markets. Over
2% of the world population has an alcohol or illicit drug addiction.
Around 275 million people used drugs worldwide in the last year of unprecedented upheaval
caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study also finds that drug use in prison is much higher than in the general population, with
heroin use 14 times more prevalent.
The US is the world's largest consumer of illegal drugs. It accounts for less than 5% of the world
population yet accounts for more than 25% of global illegal drug demand, according to most
estimates.

DRUG ADDICTION IN 2019-2020:

65.8 million U.S. adults reported binge drinking and 35.8 million reported
illicit drug use or prescription pain reliever misuse during the past month.
Persons with substance use disorders are at high risk for overdose and other
harms.
DRUG ADDICTION IN 2021-2022:
According to the report, around 284 million people aged 15-64 used drugs
worldwide in 2020, a 26 percent increase over the previous decade.
In 2022, reported use of any illicit drug within the past year remained at or
significantly below pre-pandemic levels for all grades, with 11% of eighth
graders, 21.5% of 10th graders, and 32.6% of 12th graders reporting any
illicit drug use in the past year.

Afghanistan:
The biggest producer of opium worldwide, Afghanistan remains the most
significant drug trafficking country. The country is the source of 90% of the
world’s illicit opium and heroin. A significant portion of the Afghan economy is
dependent on the drug trade. The country is also home to the world’s largest
supplier of opium, which is used to produce heroin.
Drug trafficking in Western countries:
USA:
Consumers pay retail dealers who pay wholesalers, and the cash is then transferred
back in bulk cash form to Mexico. These funds are then used to pay smugglers to
bring drugs back into the United States again. The best evidence indicates that
about 99 percent of U.S. consumers of drugs are U.S. citizens. Note that since
trafficking involves movement from Mexico to the United States, it is unclear how to
measure the likelihood of conviction for a noncitizen without U.S. lawful immigration
status or citizenship since the denominator would include most Mexicans in Mexico
as well as anyone who crosses through Mexico.

International Cooperation of Pakistan on World Drug issues:

At the international level, Pakistan remains an active member of the UN
Commission on Narcotics Drugs (CND) and has contributed to the global debate
on World Drug issues based on its commitment to the principle of multilateralism
and international cooperation.
During the last CND session in Vienna, Pakistan tabled a resolution highlighting
the issue of drug abuse in educational settings, which was unanimously approved
by the Member States. National initiatives, in collaboration with UNODC, are
being pursued to scale up measures aimed at preventing drug abuse in educational
settings. "Pakistan has also become the first country in the region to develop an
implementation roadmap for UNGASS, a feat achieved through effective support
from UNODC.
International Cooperation of the USA on World Drug issues:
The Nelson Mandela Rules provide clear benchmarks for prison officials on safety,
security, and the humane treatment of prisoners. The United Nations Office on
Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the custodian of these rules, working to promote
and support their adoption worldwide.
Ongoing efforts seek to address drug misuse through education and
prevention, substance use disorder treatment, law enforcement, and drug
interdiction, as well as programs that serve populations affected by drug
misuse.

 OUR ORGANIZATION:
Slogan:
‘’Put it out before, it puts you out’’
Rehabilitation centers will vary greatly in terms of the services offered reads apart from
their treatment program and interim soft amenities provide at their facilities.
Nevertheless, in general, “rehab” is a place where patients receive substance addiction
treatment on an inpatient basis.

 Following are the steps used by an organization to treat their patients:

“THE SEVEN STEPS OF THE TREATMENT’’

1. The cardinal rule of any rehab center is, of course, no drugs or alcohol. Violating this rule
is a serious infraction that can threaten the recovery of all patients at the facility. Banned
items may include mouthwash, cleaners, and other everyday items that can be abused.
2. Except for couples that enter rehab together, romantic relationships among residents or
between residents and staff are prohibited.

3. Mandatory attendance at all programs and no unexcused absences.

4. While no fully universal rule, many rehab center SF orbiters of cell phones and
computers.

5. Similarly, many rehab centers also prohibit music, movies, and television except where
used as part of the therapeutic process.

6. No harassment or violence among residents against staff is tolerated.

7. Information learned about other residents during the treatment program must be kept in
confidence.
1. To Help You Restore Your Personal Best Level of Functional Ability
Restoring function and independence lost to injury, illness, surgery, stroke or other medical
events is one of the chief goals of short-term rehab. To achieve this goal, you will work with a
multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals to first identify your therapy and treatment
needs, then address those needs via a personalized treatment plan. That treatment plan will be
intensive. You can expect to spend a minimum of three hours a day with therapists – physical,
occupational , and/or speech therapists, according to your individual needs – along with medical
care and monitoring, pain and medication management, and nursing and personal care. This
comprehensive treatment, therapy, and care work to help ensure steady progress toward your
recovery and rehabilitation goals.
2. To Speed up our Recovery
Another primary goal of short-term rehab is to help patients achieve their personal best levels of
recovery and rehabilitation as quickly as is medically safe and possible. While the time it takes
varies from one patient to another, your rehabilitation team will be working to help you get back
on your feet and back to your life in the shortest possible time – another goal that is well-served
by the intensive, comprehensive and highly personalized treatment plans used in short term rehab
programs.

3. To Help You Recover Safely and Comfortably

With around-the-clock nursing and medical care, as well as plenty of daily access to
therapists and other staff, short-term rehab offers a safe and comfortable environment for your
recovery and rehabilitation. You will have the support and supervision you need to help ensure
against injury as you complete prescribed exercises and activities, as well as access to safe, high-
quality equipment and facilities. Physicians and nursing staff will assist you with your medical
needs, reducing the risk of medical problems or complications. You will receive any assistance
you need in terms of personal care tasks, and healthy meals and snacks will be provided. These
and other services are all about ensuring your safety and comfort during your stay, leaving you
free to focus your time and energy exclusively on your recovery.

 Main focus of rehabilitation:

The main focus of rehabilitation is on:

1. Achieving as full a physical and psychological recovery as possible.

2. Improving the quality of life through gaining life management skills, a sense of direction
for the future, and resilience.
3. Rebuilding social connectedness to family and community.
4. Finding a new valued role within the community.
5. Learning to understand and self-manage physical and mental health conditions to the best
of the person's ability.
6. Assisting the person to return to safe and meaningful work at the earliest possible time to
minimize further harm to physical and mental health and wellbeing through long-term
absence from employment.
Levels of Social Work Social Work:
Social Work:
It is a helping activity to assist in respect of problems. Carried on by the government or
nongovernmental organizations or both for the benefit of the members of the community.
The goal of the profession of social work is to assist communities and vulnerable
individuals in overcoming difficulties they encounter daily. Although social workers
work in a wide range of contexts, they are all dedicated to promoting and enhancing the
lives of people, families, groups, and societies.

Levels:
Social workers only engage in one specific form of employment. The discipline is often
divided into three interconnected scales: micro, mezzo, and macro.

Micro Level:
Micro-level social work involves direct intervention and one-to-one support of
individuals, families, and small groups navigating personal and social challenges. At this
level, social workers perform behavioral and case management services. These services
may include assessing, planning, monitoring, and evaluating interventions and services to
ensure they meet the client’s needs.
Micro-level social workers help their clients access resources, secure housing, find
employment, access healthcare, and connect with other social services.
Work environments at the micro level vary depending on specialization and area of
practice. Some work settings include schools, hospitals, treatment centers, shelters,
military facilities, police departments, and private practices.
Different kinds of work are done by our organization at the micro level. Hold individual
counseling and psychotherapy sessions for individuals, couples, and families. Identifying
those who are drug addicts and giving them the appropriate information. Educating them
about the value of life for people and their families. influencing victims to enter
rehabilitation facilities. providing information to patients and their families about their
ailments and available treatments. Social workers encourage and assist patients.
Meso Level:
Meso social work entails creating and implementing social assistance programs for tiny
communities and localities (ex. schools, neighborhoods, and city districts). Mezzo social
workers frequently engage in direct communication with the groups they are trying to
help, similar to micro social workers. Mezzo social workers, on the other hand, offer
assistance to groups of people at a time rather than providing individual counseling and
support.
These professionals organize community groups, lead classes, and provide group therapy
or counseling to those dealing with challenges like grief, substance abuse, chronic illness,
and mental health. Mezzo social workers play an integral role in developing and
evaluating the structures and resources that address problems and policies affecting
whole communities.
Meso social workers may work in small and medium-sized businesses, schools,
nonprofit organizations, community service organizations, health, and medical centers,
and correctional facilities. Our organization does the following works at this level to
serve the community:
 Working to develop rehab centers in societies.
 Creation of action campaigns in communities.
 Conduct seminars in universities.
 Spreading awareness through banners.
 Helping police catch drug suppliers.

 Macro Level:
Macro-level social work encompasses the broadest scope of social work.
Professionals working at this level address systemic issues affecting local, state,
national, and international communities. Macro social work involves advocacy,
policy, and research to create a comprehensive understanding of social issues and
determine effective interventions.
Social workers at the macro level work on program development, creating and
implementing community-based education initiatives, administration, and policy
analysis. They may also assist with government proceedings, legislation, and
budgets.

Work environments at the macro level vary among positions. Potential

workplaces include local, state, and federal government agencies; nonprofit
organizations; national and international public service agencies; universities and
other research institutions; and advocacy groups.

Our organization works to deal with the problems occurring at the micro and
mezzo level. Our social workers try to increase the budget of the organization by
working on increments of funds from the government and by collecting donations
from the whole country and overseas donators also. They also work on policies to
take strict action against drug smugglers and suppliers.

Our group aims to address issues at the micro and mezzo levels. Our social
workers attempt to improve the organization's budget by seeking to increase
government funding and by collecting donations from across the nation and from
foreign donors as well. They also work on laws that will punish drug suppliers
and smugglers harshly.
