Evidence
The prevalence of marijuana usage, particularly marijuana vaping, has reached record highs
among young individuals, according to research. According to the annual Monitoring the
Future (MTF) study, one in four young individuals and nearly one in ten use marijuana
everyday. According to a poll, Gen Z smokes marijuana at a rate that is twice as high as the
national average. According to studies, marijuana use among adults has increased as a
result of drug liberalization.
The perception of cannabis among young individuals has also shifted as a result of drug
legalization. Only approximately 25% of individuals polled in the MTF survey believed that
frequent marijuana usage might be harmful. Additionally, only 6% of young adults said that
occasionally using marijuana carried a "high risk of harm."

Mental health doctors fear that if marijuana usage among young adults rises as a result of
drug legalization, so too will the prevalence of cannabis use disorder. The National Institute
on Drug Abuse estimates that up to 30% of marijuana users may have a cannabis use
disorder. Research suggests that young adults are more likely than any other age group to
experience worry, anxiety, and virtual isolation connected to the epidemic, so the risk may
be higher right now. As a result, they are turning to marijuana as a coping strategy.

Rehabilitation center expenses

Treatment can help cut down on the roughly $600 billion in annual costs associated with
substance misuse in our country. Therapy for drug addiction has been proven to significantly
lower associated health and societal costs compared to the cost of the actual treatment.
Additionally, treatment is significantly less expensive than alternatives like locking addicted
people up. For instance, the average cost of a full year of methadone maintenance therapy
is about $4,700 per patient, while the average cost of a full year of incarceration is almost
$24,000 per individual.

Rehabilitation center expenses are both a risk to everyone and the economy due to it being
expensive and more people rehabilitation means more expense for the government into
building rehabilitation centers.
Violence

It is commonly known that substance misuse and violent behavior are related. According to
one study, more than 26% of respondents who admitted to using cocaine, marijuana, and
alcohol over the previous 12 months also admitted to committing a violent crime during that
time.

Some people steal money aggressively in order to buy more drugs, while others might be
involved in the drug trade, which frequently results in violent crimes. Others experience
violence as a chronic side effect of their drug use. For example, methamphetamine addicts
may exhibit aggressive or violent behavior, as well as anxiety, confusion, sleeplessness, and
mood issues.

The psychological dangers of cocaine usage also include unpredictable, aggressive, or

paranoid conduct. Similar to hallucinogens, these substances can provoke unexpected,
violent behavior that can result in serious harm or even death.

Drug trafficking

Drug trafficking would continue to be an issue. If governments impose high drug taxes, it is
conceivable that some criminal organizations will continue to produce and smuggle
narcotics, giving consumers a lower price.

Needle borne illnesses

Blood borne infections are commonly spread by people who inject drugs and share needles
or syringes. Diseases that are spread this way include: HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, and hepatitis
C.

Employment problems

Even while a current addiction may not always be obvious right away, any ongoing drug
misuse issue will ultimately come to light. The character and state of one's health undergo
the most obvious alterations. Addicts frequently start acting in ways that are different from
how they usually do. Abuse of drugs or alcohol can have negative effects on a person's
priorities and decision-making in addition to harming their physical health. These
modifications may eventually make it impossible for them to perform their job duties.

Their dependency will grow as their drug abuse problem worsens, making them more
preoccupied with finding their next fix than with doing their work. If this keeps up, the person
can lose their job. Once in this situation, the person may face losing their homes and
suffering from strained family ties.
