Single element type has a voltage regulator ol ment only while 2 element type has both voltage regulator and © voltage warning relay. Port number fur ished for information only TESTING VOLTAGE REGULATOR = Substitution of @ known good regulator for one suspected of malfunctioning will frequently save time during resting. Toyota ~ Disconnect wire from "8" terminal of alternator ond connect 10 negative of ammeter. Connect test lead from am meter positive terminal to "8" terminal of alternator. With engine running at vorying speeds from idle to 2000 RPM, voltage should be 13.8-14.8 volts ond amperage should be less than 10. omps. If not within specifications, adjust or replace regulator as required, See ADJUSTMENT. TRIE ~ if @ battery/olternator tester is avciloble, connect ‘ond test according #0 tester monufocturer's instructions. Honda ~ Connect voltmeter across battery terminals ond am: meter between positive terminal and main fuse. (Main fuse wire from battery disconnected.) Ensure that al lights ond ac Cessories are OFF ond disconnect negative cable from battery with engine idling. Vary engine speed from 2000 to 4000 RPM, tnd note voltage reading between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If not within specifications, adjust or replace regulator as required See: ADJUSTMENT. ~ If engine stops when bottery negative cable is removed, DO NOF attempt fo restart engine until cable is con: nected, Neutral Field % Terminals 6 Terminal Positions for Honda Connector ADJUSTMENT Fig. 7 — Adjustments are not applicable to sealed units. If points are slightly oxidized or pitted, dress contacts with Sandpoper (400 grt or finer). If points ore oxidized or pitted excessively, replace regulator assembly. Voltage Relay — Connect voltmeter between "N° terminal (shite wire) and ground then increase engine speed graduolly Voltmeter reading should be 4.0-5.8 volts when indicator light ‘908: out. Adjust cut in vallage by adjusting armoture core gap fond point gap using following procedures. ‘Armature Gop ‘Angle Gop Adjusting Arm dou ‘Contact Spring Deflection low Speed Point Holder A High Speed Point Holder B ig. 2 Adjustments for Voltage Relay 1) If cutin voltage is too high, adjust by bending core od iusting arm down. Bend arm up it cutin voltage is 100 low. 2) Hf adjustment of care orm does not correct cutin voltage, proceed with point gop adjustment. Disconnect negotive cable from battery. Check armature core gop with armature depressed until moving point is in contact with "B" side point ‘Armature core gop. should be 012" or more. Adjust by bending point arm "8" 3) Releose the armature and odjust the gap betwaen the "8 side point ond the moving point by bending point arm "A" Point gop should be .016" to 047" 4) After point gop adjustment, recheck cutsin voltage. If not Within 4.0-5.8 volts, repeat cutin voltage adjustme Voltage Regulator — If the no load regulated voltage is not within the 138-14. volt range, adjust regulator as follows 1) If regulated voltage is 00 high, adjust by bending or mature adjusting orm down. Bend point orm to obtain armature gap of 012" oF more, 4) Release armature and adjust gop between "8" side point ‘ond moving pomt by bending point arm "A". Gop should be O12" to 018" 5) Alter gap adjustment is made, recheck no load regulated voltage under operating test.
