Please tell us: What happened? When? How long were you affected? How serious was it? How

ability to meet the deadline.
Unfortunately, I failed my first unit which consists of 3 assignments. I need to redo them all
and so am struggling with the work overload.

I would be grateful if I could please have an extension for the submission of this unit so that I
have time to redo the previous assignment.

I am really struggling with the workload and just trying to take things small step at a time.

Thank you

Kind regards

Important Notes - please read before completing the form.
 Is it possible to get an extension?
Most students manage their studies and submit their work on time. It is an important skill for you to manage
your work in relation to deadlines; it also enables us to mark your work and provide feedback in a timely way
that does not hold up your learning. Decisions about an extension request will therefore depend upon the
reason why you feel you are unable to submit work by the deadline and the time that has been available to
complete and submit your work.
Deadlines for submitting coursework are normally set well in advance and an extension will not normally be
agreed for reasons/circumstances that are perceived as having a minimal impact upon your ability to submit
coursework in relation to the time available, for example a minor illness of a short duration or other reasons
like computer failure, transport problems or employment commitments.
An extension will normally only be agreed if a circumstance has directly and substantially affected your ability
to submit the work by the deadline. As a guide, this means that a circumstance has prevented you from
studying for more than seven days where the coursework has been set at least seven weeks in advance of the
submission deadline, if you are studying on a full-time basis, unless it can be shown and evidenced that the
circumstance has had a significant and disproportionate effect on the ability of the student to submit the
coursework by the deadline.
 How do I ask for an extension?
First, check with the school office that owns the unit whether you need to complete this form; you may not
need to provide evidence and/or complete this form to request an extension to the deadline for some
assignments. Further information on the specific process for requesting an extension should be available in
your student handbook.
 Can I get help with this form?
Yes, talk to the Just Ask advice service or a designated staff member in your school such as your personal or
senior tutor. There’s more information in the University’s ECs policy and the ECs guide.
 How much detail should I provide?
It is important that you complete all the questions on the form. Explain why you believe you need an extension,
so that it can be understood by someone who does not already know details of your study or personal
situation but try to be succinct. Your school needs to have enough information about the reason for the
request, and its impact on your ability to submit your work by the deadline.
 What evidence do I need to provide?
For an extension to be agreed, you must provide evidence of the reason why you need an extension, unless in
exceptional circumstances. You may refer to previously submitted evidence of chronic conditions or persistent
circumstances where it is relevant to the reason for the extension request. Evidence may take various forms;
but must be independent and sufficiently detailed to support your request. If relating to an illness, a medical
note, a copy of a prescription or a NHS 111 report (available from your GP) may be submitted; however, for an
illness that has not or cannot be observed by a doctor, we do not consider a medical note enough evidence of
the reason for an extension request.
 What if my situation is related to a disability?
If you feel that a disability has unexpectedly affected your ability to submit work by the deadline (such as
having a flare up or your condition has worsened) or if you believe that any adjustments in your Disability
Support Summary are not sufficient or are not yet in place, please include this in your answer to question 4.If
you have not told the University about your disability before, we strongly advise you to contact Disability
Services to discuss options for support. Any ongoing, non-trivial difficulty that affects you in your day-to-day
life and study may amount to a disability. This includes specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia or
attention deficit), autism spectrum conditions (such as Asperger syndrome) and ongoing health or mental
health difficulties.
 Where and when should I submit the form?
You must present a request to the school office (by email or in person) that owns the unit in advance of the
deadline. You do not have to include evidence when you submit the request, but you must provide it by a date
agreed with the school; otherwise we will treat the coursework as a late submission.
 What outcomes are possible?
We may agree extensions of up to seven days to ensure that your learning is not held up; or where a
circumstance has had a serious impact, we may agree a longer extension of up to 21 days.
 What if I am not eligible for an extension or my request is rejected?
You should submit your work as soon as you can. Any work submitted after the deadline is subject to a
penalty by a reduction in the mark for the work, depending on how long after the deadline it is handed in. Each
faculty will have a policy on the penalties it applies for a late submission.
 How private is the process? I’m worried about who will see my form and evidence.
Remember that what you submit is processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act and will only be
seen by a small number of people who consider extension requests. All circumstances are confidential to this
process and are not shared or reported elsewhere, although we may contact you about any further support
that you may need.
 I really don’t want more people to know my situation than is absolutely necessary.
Your circumstances will be treated seriously, respectfully and in confidence; however, there may be times
where a circumstance is personally sensitive, and distressing and you may not want to disclose the details of
the circumstance on this form or by submitting evidence. If this is the case, please contact your school office
who will arrange for you to talk to an appropriate staff member. They can raise your situation on your behalf,
confidentially, and without revealing the details. They can also advise you about evidence.
 What if I missed the deadline to submit an extension?
If you experienced a circumstance but were not able to inform the University at the time or were not aware of
the severity of its impact upon your studies, you may be able to raise this as an Extenuating Circumstance;
please speak to your school about this in the first instance.
 What happens next?
This form and evidence will be considered by a small dedicated team in the school that owns the unit. They
will inform you of the outcome, prior to the original submission date where that is possible.

In summary:
 You should always try to hand in work by the deadline; this is the normal expectation; however, should you
feel you need an extension, speak to the relevant unit director or contact the relevant school office to find
out whether you are eligible for an extension and what you need to do
 Extensions are only likely be granted to account for significant disruptions to study; students are expected
to manage and work around short disruptions such as a minor illness of seven days or less, where the
coursework deadline is set well in advance.
 Submit your extension request to the relevant school office before the coursework deadline
 You must provide evidence of the reason why you need an extension, unless in exceptional circumstances
 If accepted, the relevant school will inform you of your new deadline, but in most cases this will be an
extension of up to seven days
 Any work that is submitted late is subject to a mark reduction penalty, unless an extension has been
agreed
 If you are experiencing a circumstance that is affecting your study, do get in contact with your school (e.g.
your personal tutor) or the University’s student support services for advice and support.
