COVID-19 ARTICLE

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people
infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring
special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-
19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. It was confirmed to have spread to Indonesia on 2
March 2020, after a dance instructor and her mother tested positive for the virus. Both were infected from a Japanese
national.

By 9 April, the pandemic had spread to all 34 provinces in the country. Jakarta, East Java, and West Java are the
worst-hit provinces, together accounting around 47% of the national total cases. The largest increase of new cases in a
single day occurred on 3 December, when 8,369 cases were announced. At most 5,838 recoveries and 221 fatalities
were ever recorded within a span of 24 hours. On 13 July, the recoveries exceeded active cases for the first time.

As of 22 December, Indonesia has reported 678,125 cases, the highest in Southeast Asia, ahead of the Philippines. In
terms of death numbers, Indonesia ranks third in Asia and 17th in the world. Review of data, however, indicated that
the number of deaths may be much higher than what has been reported as those who died with acute COVID-19
symptoms but had not been confirmed or tested were not counted in the official death figure.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it
causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based
rub frequently and not touching your face before wash your hands.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person
coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette

The Government of Indonesia said that we have several ways to prevent infection and to slow transmission of
COVID-19, we can do the following step below :

 Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with alcohol-based hand rub.
 Maintain at least 1 metre distance between you and people coughing or sneezing.
 Avoid touching your face.
 Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
 Stay home if you feel unwell.
 Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
 Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from large groups of people.

Somehow the goverment must work together with every general public to reduce the spread of COVID-19. If we work
together and always follow the protocol of health in order to avoid the virus, the transmission of COVID-19 in
Indonesia will reduce slowly until it gone anytime and we will have normal live like before.
