Drama script

(Damiete and Ekene sit within the audience. They are in the
round. Daniel and Tobi are offstage. Damiete looks nervous,
jittery and struggles to make eye-contact with Ekene. Ekene
looks friendly and silently taps a notebook with a pen)
Ekene: “Hello Arthur. My name is Dr John Goodman, but you
can call me John if you like. How are you feeling today? “
Damiete: (almost inaudibly) “Same as always. The noises in my
head just won’t go away and any time I close my eyes I can’t
stop reliving that moment. The shot. The blood. The... (Voice
trails off and starts breathing heavily. He grips the chair as
he does so.)
Ekene: “Its Ok. It's Ok. Just calm down. Listen to my voice all
right? (Damiete’s breathing steadies) That’s it”
Damiete: “That feeling when you look into his eyes knowing you
couldn’t do anything, knowing he was gone forever.
Ekene: “Tell me about it then. Let me help you.”
(Freeze frame 1. Damiete stands up as Tobi and Daniel enter the
inner circle- guns pointing)
CHORUS: (Cue war sounds) “1968 THE JUNGLES OF
VIETNAM. RAIN. POURING. HANDS TREMBLING. 2 MEN
AGAINST AN INVISIBLE ARMY IN THE TREES. SPLIT FROM
THEIR PLATOON TRAVELLING UNDER A CANOPY OF STARS.”
Tobi: “Come on. We have to find them before daylight. We’re
sitting ducks by morning and the nothing more than to snipe
out two lonely American soldiers.”
Daniel “I am right behind you. (scoffs) American. We came to
America for a better life, not to be drafted into the godforsaken
war!”
Tobi: “Shhh! Keep your voice down. You don’t know who is
hiding in these trees. Now keep your head down and watch out
for any traps. The jungle is laced with them.”
(Freeze frame 2: They keep on walking and then (Cue snaping
branch sound) Tobi Abruptly stops. He signals to Daniel behind
him to do the same)
Tobi: “What was that?”
Daniel: “Probably nothing.”
Tobi “It definitely was something”
Daniel: “What? We’re alone out here. It's not like there’s a whole
army hidden in the trees”
(Cue sniper sound)
Tobi: “Daniel!”
(Daniel lies on the floor motionless)
Tobi: “No! No! Not like this! Not like this! Come on. Come on!
Wake up! Wake Up!
(Freeze frame 3: looks horrified at his blood-stained hands and
carries a limp Daniel in his arms.)
CHORUS: (Cue war sounds) “1968 THE JUNGLES OF
VIETNAM. RAIN. POURING. HANDS TREMBLING. 2 MEN
AGAINST AN INVISIBLE ARMY IN THE TREES. A SNIPER BULLET.
A FATAL WOUND. DANIEL’S BODY RECEIVED BY A CANOPY
OF STARS”
