Instructions
In full and grammatical sentences, answer the 8 questions below about the text, “The
Night Watchmen” by Lygia Navarro. Do not forget your APA 7 in-text citations.

Before you Read the Text

1. one of the critical reading strategies is to brainstorm everything you already know
about the topic before reading the article. This allows readers to tap into their prior
knowledge, which helps them better understand the text they are going to read.
Before you read Lygia Navarro’s article, describe everything you know about the
type of jobs or work international students find. Explain how you know this
information.
Answer1 As I am an international student, and I have same friends with me
they told me that most international students try to find job that suite their
schedule for college for this they try to find out part times jobs that have
many categories like unskilled, skilled and many more. Unskilled jobs
include factory worker, packing, cleaning whereas skilled jobs include
security, forklift, bartender and many more.

2. Another critical reading strategy is to preview the text and look for clues as to
what the text will be about. Readers do this by skimming the title, subtitle,
headings, sub-headings, and the first and last line of each paragraph. Again, this
allows readers to make predictions and form expectations about the text they are
about to take in. As readers read, they can ask themselves if their predictions were
right or wrong. Before you read Lygia Navarro’s article, preview the text by skimming
the article’s title, subtitle, topic and concluding sentences. What do you predict the
article will be about? Don’t forget to support your answer with evidence from the
article.
Answer2] I predict that this article the night watchmen is about international
students doing security jobs in Canada as a role of night watchmen and
problems and exploitation that international student face in Canada. I say
this “the prese e of bad actors in the security industry, say security experts Malik
and Buhr, is an open secret. There are security companies that exploit these
guards,”[para. 13].

3. Authors are not always explicit (straightforward) about their views, purpose/ goal,
message. Often, they imply (suggest or hint) their points. Therefore, a critical
reading strategy is to make inferences or “read between the lines” as you read to
accurately understand the full meaning of a text. An inference is an educated guess
based on evidence in the text, combined with your prior knowledge. As you’re
reading, then, it’s a good idea to make some notes in the margins of the text or on a
separate page about your inferences, as well as the evidence that led to your
conclusions. As you read Navarro’s article, what can you infer is the author’s main
point or thesis? How did you reach this conclusion? In otherwords, what is the
evidence in the text to imply that this is the author’s main message? Don’t forget to
consider the title.

Answer3] I predict that the author main point about the article the how
international students are being exploited by employers in Canada as they are
getting very low wages and due to high turions fee they are working in cash
overtime. I know this because Navarro [2002] “ There are security companies that
exploit these guards,” Malik says. The con goes like this: a security company advertises
cash jobs paying under minimum wage to international students (“Please dm who can evr
these shifts $15 cash, reads one message in a Telegram group for students)”.[para 13].

4. Another way we make inferences is by examining the author’s diction (choice of

words). Often, an author’s diction is packed with hidden meaning, and the author’s
choice of words can tell us a lot about what they really mean, how they view
something, and what they want to achieve with their piece. Identify one word or
phrase that the author uses to connote (imply or suggest) a deeper meaning. What
does this word or phrase tell you about the author’s attitude towards the topic?
Answer4] I am using phrase “under the table’’ from [para 11] that has a
deeper meaning that is many international students still work more than 20
hours for this they work in cash and are being exploited by employers and
they get very low wages like 5dollar per hour. The reason that they are
working is due to high tuition fee and family problems financially.

5. Another critical reading strategy is to identify the author’s support for their main
point(s). This helps readers confirm their understanding of the author’s main
message, and it helps readers see the basic components of an effective argument
(or lack of!). Readers can then use this information to assess whether the author’s
point is valid, and they can decide whether they would want to use similar
techniques in their own pieces of communication. What are the main points the
author makes to support their main message and what evidence do they use to back
up their main points?
Answer5] The author major message is that despite the problems he faces in
Canada, Jaswinder is determined to build a life for himself and for his family in
Canada. The author, provides details on Jaswinder's future goals, including his
determination to get a project management degree, pursue a career in food
industry, save money for his wedding, have children and provide financial
support to his family. The author also provides a realistic description of

Jaswinder's inner state, such as longing for home and his determination to make
a good life in Canada as he dreamed.

6. Another critical reading strategy is to have a conversation with the text and ask
questions as you read because it helps readers focus on the meaning of the text.
As you were reading the text, what was one question that came to you? Why did you
wonder about this question? Did you find the answer to your question in the text?
Answer6] As an international student the question that came in my mind while
reading the article is if the number of international students keep increasing day
by day in Canada as Mosty want to live in near Toronto the situation would get
even more worse like the tuition fee will keep increasing and due to excess
students' unemployment would also rise in the end international students who
came with a dream have to go back in their country. The solution for this problem
is not in the article but I suggest that masses should take constructive steps
towards this issue.

7. Reflecting on all of the critical reading strategies you have used in this assignment,
which one was the most useful to you and why? Which reading strategies do you
see yourself using again in the future and why?
Answer7] I used two reading strategies that used while reading the article the
night watchmen are annotating and outlining. Annotating was the most useful
strategy while reading is because this helped me in highlighting key passages
in the text during an explanation, such as the thesis statement, body
paragraphs, and descriptive language and helped me to understand reading
article easily.

8. Create an APA 7 Reference citation for the article using the following structure:

Author's Last Name, first initial. Second Initial if Given. (Year magazine article was
