area(s)/developmental How does this lesson support all five domains of child development?
domain(s) addressed
Social emotional: Students will be able to explore their five senses by taking part in the recipe.
Cognitive: Students will be able to read a recipe and follow directions, and listen to peers.
Physical: Students will be able to connect with their food by being able to touch it without the
barrier of gloves.
Language: Students will be able to develop their math vocabulary by using the appropriate
words for measurable attributes.
Approach: Students will be able to create their no bake sun butter treats using appropriate
measurements.

Brief description and Why is there a need for this lesson (include citation)?
rationale for the lesson
This lesson plan is the final lesson plan of the “Cultures Around the World: Teaching through
food” segment. After students learn about their differences and similarities, they will become
comfortable with exploring and learning about different types of food. At this time, students will
have been able to connect with the concept of diversity, and will be open to creating food
through math.

Students will be able to learn how to properly follow measurements for a recipe. This is
important because cooking activities promote a fun foundation for math. Additionally, students
will be able to get acquainted with real world problems and they will create their own solutions.

Recipe: No bake sun butter treats

Objective(s) of the activity What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning experience?
Lesson objectives must align with the assessment of student learning.

Students will be able to demonstrate that they can compare and describe measurable attributes
of a recipe.

Connections to standards K.MATH.21. [NY-K.MD.1.] Describes measurable attributes of an object(s), such as length or weight,
using appropriate vocabulary (e.g., small, big, short, tall, empty, full, heavy, light).

K.MATH.22. [NY-K.MD.2.] Directly compares two objects with a common measurable attribute and
describes the difference.

Language Objectives What language/vocabulary, communication, or literacy skill(s) do I want my students to develop in
this lesson? For edTPA consider this: Which academic language demands am I targeting? Choose
one, including language functions, vocabulary, syntax, or discourse that is central to this learning
segment. How is this activity using the specific language demand?

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get children’s attention, or to

introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process in getting them interested and
engaged. HOOK

At the beginning of the lesson, the educator will remind students of what they have learned so
far about foods around the world. The educator will then ask students about their favorite parts
of the previous lessons. Students will respond to this question and share out in class. Educator
will then ask, “What is your favorite snack?” Students will respond. The following guided
questions would be, “would you like to create your own snack?” Students will respond excitedly.
Teacher will then inform the students that they will create their own treats on that day. The
Lesson Plan for Preschool-Grade 2
educator will state it is their favorite snack and will show the students how to create it.
Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will make up this
learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine wherein you model (I try); and ask
for active involvement (we try) during a whole group session.

As a whole class, the educator and students will go over the recipe, vocabulary, and demo
together.

The educator will play the demo on the smartboard.

Afterwards,, a student will collect a piece of paper with a “How to” outline of the no bake
sunbutter treats with pictures on the table. Then, the educator will place a box with the labeled
and pictured materials on the group tables. Every child will put on their aprons/smocks. The
students are allowed to use the materials as they wish.

In the middle of the lesson the educator will offer guidance for students who ask for help, or may
seem as though they need help. Students will be in charge of their recipes and will be asked to
use the words they have learned to communicate with each other during this lesson.

Independent Practice (during small group activity, working with partners, or independently)

Students will be able to create their no bake sun butter treats.

Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)

Towards the end of the lesson, students will be able to eat their creations, while music plays and
educator and students alike affirm how wonderful and tasty the treats they made are.
Lesson Plan for Preschool-Grade 2
If a student says they do not like it, that is ok. Remind your students to “not yuck anyone’s yum.”

At the very end, the educator will make sure that students clean up their spaces by using the “I
do, you do, we do” model.

Students will be able to learn how to work in a group, and how to listen and observe. Students
will be allowed to have their treats during snack time. Students will be able to clean up after
themselves.

Follow up/Extension How can I provide an opportunity to remediate, reinforce, or expand on students’ learning today in
activities class?

Educator will send a summary and homework regarding the lesson, that contains visuals and
Family Engagement Activities vocabulary, of the materials that were used in the lesson. A copy of the recipe will also be
provided.

Homework: Create a recipe at home, and bring your findings to school.

How can I support families in extending the learning in their home environment?

Recap the lesson plan to the families. Ask parents/guardians if they can cook with their
children, and let them interact with the measurements and ingredients. Provide a list of
definitions and visuals for parents as well. Ask parents to use the words in English and their
language while cooking.
