SECTION A. 1-5. SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (20 Marks).

Instructions: There are Five questions in this section. Answer ALL by writing brief statements.

1. A friend comes to you who shows interest in studying “Human Development and
Relationships.” What two pieces of advice can you give him or her about the importance
of studying the subject? (4 marks).

2. Briefly explain two cultural beliefs about pregnancies that are found in your cultural
context (4 marks).

3. The family of Mr and Mrs. Phiri has two children, a son and a daughter. The son seems to
be close to the mother while the daughter seems to be close to the father. How would
Sigmund Freud explain the relationship dynamics that are taking place between these
children and their parents? (4 marks).

4. A Belgian woman, named Suzanne Hoylaets and aged 90, died of Covid-19 after refusing
a respirator. She told her doctors to save the respirator for the young people because
according to her she had already had a beautiful life. According to Erikson’s theory of the
stages of the life-span, which stage of development is being demonstrated by the way
Suzanne had lived her life? Why? (4 marks).

5. Identify any two possible consequences of preterm and low birth weight in infants?
(4marks).

SECTION B: 6-10. ESSAY QUESTIONS (80 Marks)

Instructions: There are FIVE questions in this section from which you should answer FOUR
questions only. Each question carries 20 marks each.

6. Imagine that you have been invited by your community leader to teach pregnant women
and their husbands in your community about hazards to prenatal development. The
community leader has taken this initiative because recently there have been instances of
women losing pregnancies in his community. In your orientation to these women, include
any four factors that are hazardous to pregnancy (20 marks).

7. At age forty, this is the first pregnancy for Janet. Since it is widely accepted that women
who become pregnant for the first time after thirty-five years experience complications
during the birth process. Janet is worried that she may experience a longer, and more
difficult birth process. Using recent research findings, explain to Janet about the factor of
women’s age and pregnancy (20 marks)

8. Explain any five pieces of advice about Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) that you
would give to a friend who has just had a baby? (20 marks).

9. In an era when breastfeeding is encouraged by the government, by the medical profession


and even by baby formula companies, some women are reluctant to breastfeed their
babies. Identify any five benefits of breast feeding to infants that you can share with such
women (20 marks).

10. You have been asked by group of nursery school teachers to give a talk on factors that
enhance cognitive development during the preschool years or early childhood years. In
your outline, discuss four factors that they need to know in order to promote cognitive
development in the preschoolers (20 marks).
