Reyes?
Awarded National Artist of the Philippines (Dance) on 2014

A dancer, choreographer, teacher, and

director. Reyes was born on the 14th of
October, 1942. She began classical ballet
classes at an early age under Rosalia
Merino while attending Maryknoll College,
where she earned a Bachelor of Arts
degree in History and Foreign Services.
She then pursued post-graduate studies
at Ateneo de Manila University. She
continued her education in the Philippine
Women's University, where she was

and Ricardo Casell. She also studied folk
dance at the Bayanihan Philippine

Fun Fact:
Alice Reyes is the visionary founder of Ballet Philippines. She
propelled the company into a national arts institution we can all be
proud of. In the Philippines, she established regular season concerts,
professionalized dance as a career, and played a major role in the
phenomenal development of dance in the country. She continued to
shine even brighter as she grew up. Way before she started the
company that was to become Ballet Philippines, she had started
contributing to the household by dancing and creating dances for the
promotion of contemporary dance in the Philippines. The biggest
contribution is the development of a distinctly Filipino modern
dance idiom. Utilizing inherently Filipino materials and subject
matters expressed through a combination of movements and
styles from Philippine indigenous dance, modern dance and
classical ballet she has successfully created a contemporary
dance language that is uniquely Filipino. From her early
masterpiece Amada to the modern dance classic Itim-Asu, to her
last major work Bayanihan Remembered which she staged for
Ballet Philippines, she utilized this idiom to promote unique
facets of Philippine arts, culture, and heritage
