1. Give the common causes of acute exacerbation of COPD and the necessary
management for this situation.
Infection in the lungs or airways is the most frequent reason for an exacerbation
(breathing tubes). Although some acute exacerbations are brought on by bacterial or
viral infections, the reason for an acute exacerbation is typically unknown. High levels of
air pollution, smoking, and irritating inhalational exposure are additional risk factors.
Treatment options for acute COPD exacerbations include oxygen, inhaled beta2
agonists, anticholinergics, antibiotics, and systemic corticosteroids. Patients who do not
react to conventional bronchodilators may be possibilities for methylxanthine treatment.
Patients with sufficient home care can frequently receive treatment for mild
exacerbations outside of the hospital setting.
