1. What was you experience with faith and religion?

I was born in a family of very religious people. When I was a child, I studied in a Christian school. I
thought that following God’s command will make me a good person. My family, the church and the
school taught us that doing “worldly” acts will make me a bad person and I will burn in hell. They always
taught us that science is not always right, that scientific evidences are not real and those are just the
acts of devil. They always taught us that Catholic is a bad religion and our religion which is Born Again
are good because we never do sign of the cross and never praise any statue. In fact, we don’t have
statue in our church. For me, our religion thinks that we are superior than others and because of that, I
had this idea that our ways of worshipping God are the right way and should be followed by everyone.
But as I grew up and started to understand the behavior of every people especially my family’s behavior,
I started to question them. If God love us equally, why do we think our religion is superior? They our
church kept saying that we are equal in the eyes of God, why do they hate Catholics and Gay people?
And this is my favorite question to them; according to our church and my family, if you don’t
acknowledge God, you will never enter his kingdom. So, my question to them is this, if a man that is
isolated to the world and don’t have any idea about God but always do good deeds, will he never enter
the kingdom of God? They would answer me “Yes, that guy will never enter the kingdom of heaven
because he needs to acknowledge God.” And my follow up question to them is this, if a man that killed
hundreds of people but before he died asked forgiveness to God, will he enter the kingdom of heaven?
And their answer is “Yes, he will enter the kingdom of heaven because God is forgiving and he loves us
equally. Whatever sins you made; you will always be forgiven.” And this confuses me so much back then
because for me, it is unfair and because of that, I started to lose my faith in religion and in God. I started
to rebel against my family, our school and our church. I started doing “worldly acts” and started to curse
at everyone and it feels great. It feels great to free myself on their beliefs though it costs me to hate my
family. These all happened during my elementary days.
2. Does this experience mold your understanding of right and wrong? Explain.

For me Yes, this experience molds my understanding of right and wrong. Today, I do good deeds
because I believe it is the moral thing to do and not because I want to enter the kingdom of heaven. And
for me, respect is the only thing that matters because if we respect each other, we don’t need to believe
in religion. And education is the only answer for us to become a good person and not religion. Because
education helps us to become critical thinkers and become open to everything unlike religion.
