The Lived Experiences of GAS Students both in Private and Public School a Phenomenology

Introduction

One of the most significant changes in Philippine education is the shift in the curriculum from the Basic

Education Curriculum (BEC) to K to 12. Additional two years was added for primary education. Senior High

School (SHS) aimed to produce graduates who are ready for college, employment, and being an

entrepreneur. The curriculum produced its first batch of graduates on the school year 2017-2018. This

study aimed to describe the lived experiences of GAS students both in private and public school in

different subjects included in the curriculum and explore the influence of these experiences in their

identity development and career decision making to come up with suggestions on how to improve

teachers' instruction of selected disciplines and on the improvement of the GAS program itself.

Students had a lot of questions about SHS when it opened, and during the transition period, they had to

make some big adjustments. The findings of this study demonstrated the various ways in which the

pioneer graduates' lives are impacted by the curriculum. A significant strand is GAS. Any student who

struggles with self-awareness and determining their future goals must benefit from it. That objective was

accomplished if the school had directed GAS kids. To achieve this, the school must make the most of its

resources. The K–12 objective, in especially the senior high school objective, will gradually be observed in

the lives of Filipino students (De Taza, 2019).

This study is focus to GAS or General Academic Strand Students from Grade 11-12, ages 16 to 18 Years

old. This is also the key to help them realize what is this study all about. Choosing courses when going to

college is a very confusing one. This is study is all about the Senior High School GAS students that share

about their experiences and difficulties of being a student. To furthermore understand about the contents

of research paper, the researchers are proposing this study.
