“DIFFICULTIES OF INCOMING GRADE 11 STUDENTS IN CHOOSING A

PARTICULAR STRAND FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL”

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Some of in-coming grade 11 students are still undecided in choosing their strand.

They have difficulties in choosing strand because they don’t know what are they going

to take because of lack of knowledge on what strand that’s fit for them. Some of them

didn’t know what they want to be someday that’s why they can’t choose properly.

The K to 12 Program covers . Kinder garden and 12 years of basic education

(six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two year of Senior

High School [SHS] to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop

lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills

development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Senior high school (SHS) refers to Grades 11 and 12, the last two years of the

K-12 program that Department of Education has been implementing since 2012.

Students begin to study in SHS the subjects that will introduce them to their preferred

career path. High school in the old system consisted of First Year to Fourth Year. What

corresponds to those four years today are Grades 7 to 10, also known as junior high

school (JHS).

Each Senior High School Student should know the right strand for him or her in

order to succeed. Realistically, choosing a strand is very difficult to deal with. Lack of

awareness in choosing the right strand that Fulfilling job, you should

take a career path that fits your personality. Choosing is much the same as picking your

Senior High School Tracks (SHS) because it defines Your Reaction, Actions, Values,

Likes and Dislikes. The more you know the strands that you are choosing, the more

Prepared You’ll be when faced with the process. ( Holland, 2016 ).

Senior High School Students Through interaction with the context of School, and

Community learn about and explore the strands that ultimately lead to career choice.

The influence of Family, School and Community Culture played a critical role in shaping

the youth’s Occupational choice. The economic and social circumstances of the

community can influence the Student’s Perception of appropriate career choices. Some

students mistakenly believe the only one preferred strand exists for each individual.

However, there are many strands that share the same characteristics. Instead of

seeking one path that seems like a perfect fit. Therefore, it’s important to investigate a

variety of options that have features in common (McClain, 2011).

A lack of awareness about skills, Values and interest can cause problems when

trying to choose a strand. While this is a typical problem for newly entering, or re-

entering the strands, it can affect anyone who is out of touch with that she wants from a

career. Incoming Senior High School Students only have to choose their track based on

their interest and skills and would be better prepared for which ever point they plan or

pursuing. After High School go to college, develop more skills, start of business or get

employed. (Byrne, 2012). The goal of the study is to know what are the experiences of

incoming grade 11 students. Towards choosing strand. We also want to know the

Difficulties of the students according to them in choosing strand and we also want to

know what suggestion can be due to address, the difficulties of in-coming grade 11

students.

The reason why we study this in order for us to know if they have a difficulty in

choosing their strand in k-12 what could be it for us to give them an idea and solutions.

We make this study. To know which strand are available for in-coming grade 11

students. That is based on their abilities. Skills Knowledge and talents for them to know

what stand they want to choose.

Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on the difficulties of incoming senior high school specifically, it
sought to answer the following question.

1. What are the experiences of incoming grade 11 students in choosing a particular

strand for SHS?

2. What kinds of difficulties do in-coming grade 11 students face that affect their

choice of strands for SHS?

3. What suggestion can address the difficulties in choosing a particular tracks or

strands for SHS?

Scope and Delimitation

This study wants to identify the reasons of the students why they are having

difficulties in choosing strand. The study will conduct at AMA Basic Education. This

involves 5 respondents from the grade 10 students. The researchers interview the

respondents inside the school premises and conduct the interview within class hours,

nonetheless shall not distrup any of the class schedule.

Significance of the study

This study is beneficial to the following selected people.

School Administrator - This will help them identify the troubles and difficulties of

students in choosing a strand for Senior High School and will further help them in

developing test which will guide students in choosing an appropriate strand for their

Senior High School.

Teacher - This will help them to guide students according to the difficulty that the

students are facing in choosing a particular strand, thus will help them improve the

confusion among students.

Parents - This study will inform them every difficulty that their children might experience

when choosing a particular strand, therefore,making them understand and they’ll

support their children what they need in decision making.

Students - This will further help them in understanding their confusion and come-up

with a wise decision in choosing a strand for Senior High School.
