CHAPTER I

Introduction

The difficulty that senior high school students are facing in the K-12 Basic Curriculum

that was implemented in the Philippines becomes a challenge to every student. This system

involves six years primary education, four years secondary education in the junior high and

another two years for the Senior High. On the other hand, graduates who opt to go to tertiary

education are deemed better prepared for the college study.

Career Guidance has been existed in schools for a long period of time with main goals of

assisting students to reflect in their ambitions, interest, qualifications and abilities. It helps the

students to understand the labor market, education system and also tries to teach students to

plan, made their decisions about working and learning how to manage career skills as well as

career development. In contradiction, there are difficulties that the students are facing in times

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Self- Concept

According to Gott Fredsons theory, occupational aspirations are a reflection of

one’s self- concept. This theory implies that the choices made by every student depend on their

certain talents and abilities. Moreover, this theory seeks occupations that are congruent with

their self- image and it describes that students become attracted to certain specialization.

(Fixer.com, September 04, 2014)

Self-Knowledge

Holland (1994), suggests that the closer the match of personality to job, the

greater the satisfaction. This Holland theory emphasis on the accuracy of self- knowledge and

career information necessary for career decision making as cited in Abernaty (2003). This study

was undertaken by the following conceptual framework:

Inputs- This includes their track preferences and the factors that affect their

preferences

5
Process- This includes determining their track preferences and determining the

leading factors that affects their preference.

Output- Identify the track preferences.

The generalization of this study would be a great contribution to the vast knowledge in

relation to student’s achievements.

Life Goal Setting

According to Elmer (1989) as quoted from Arguellas and Miranda (2014),

“specialization planning is life goal setting”. It means that decision making is a need to prevent

any misfits and to assist students in the process of solidifying their course specialization. Thus, it

gives students a clear shadow of his/her future.

Interest, Aptitude, School, Capacity

Senior High School is 2-years of specialized upper secondary education. Senior

High School subjects fall under either the core curriculum or specific tracks. In senior high

school students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice.

Students under immersion which may include earn- you learn opportunities to provide them

relevant exposure and actual experience of their chosen track. It concludes that the students

will undergo different stages / process in order to finish their chosen track. (Official Gazette,

2012)

6
Factors that affect the Choice of the Students in choosing their Track in Senior High

Personality

“Personality” plays an important role in the choosing of the right career the

personalities of the students drive him/her to choose the right track that they desire to take in

senior high school (Splaver, 2000).

Family

Parental support and encouragement are important factors that have been

found to influence career choice. It concludes that the parents of students are giving pressure

to the capacity of the students in selecting his/her track that their parents want them to take

(Taylor et. al 2004).

Peer/Classmates

External influences that help to shape an individual’s career choice are also

influenced by significant others through social support from peers. People around contribute a

lot in one’s decision-making (Pummel, Harwood and Lavallee, 2008).

CHAPTER III

Methodology

Research Design

The researchers used phenomenology as a research design because it finds answer on

the difficulties of Grade11 students in choosing their track in Senior High. The researchers used

phenomenological type of research because the main goal is to define and familiarize the

“difficulties” of the students in choosing their track. As this is qualitative analysis of narrative

data, methods to analyze its data is different from the approach of quantitative methods of the

research.

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique that our study used is non-probability or judgmental sampling

because of the limited numbers of Grade 11 students who experienced difficulties in choosing

their track, and capable to answer the questions be prepared.

8
Respondents

The researchers picked and interviewed eight(8) Grade 11 students randomly which

came from different track in Senior High School, specifically STEM(Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics), ABM(Accountancy, Business and Management),

HUMSS(Humanities and social sciences), and then TECH-VOC courses: Automotive, Smaw,

Cookery, AFA(Agri-Fishery Arts), and ICT(Information Communication Technology).

Data Gathering Technique

The researchers used unstructured interview because we wanted our respondents to

answer all the questions according to their experience on the difficulties they faced. We

approach the respondents personally, In addition, we interview our respondents in their free

time or vacant to have a face-to-face interview.

CHAPTER IV

Interview Data, Analysis and Discussions

Difficulties of students in choosing their track in Senior High School

According to Jannin C. Doloyas, she chooses the HUMSS (Humanities and Social

Sciences) because her family wants her to take this track.

The same situation that John Aldren N. Roto is facing. He has difficulties in financial

capacity on his family. “Gusto ni Mama kag Papa nga kwa-on ko nga course is engineering amo

na nga nag STEM ko”.

Both of his parents want him to take engineering that’s why he ewnrolled in STEM,

according to John Aldren Roto’s statement

Based on the result of the study, influences of parents are commonly on the student’s

decision in choosing their track or specialization in senior high school. Thus, family supports and

encourages them to take a track whether it is aligned to their interest or not. Furthermore, the

study implies that most of the senior high school students depends on the decision or choice of

track that their parent wanted them to take

10
Effects of chosen track to student’s performance in class

“Gusto ko mag kwa TVL nga strand kasu gin hagad ko sang miga ko nga ma ABM kami.”

Katrina Villanueva shared.

She wants to take TVL as her chosen strand but by the pressure of her friends, she

enrolled in ABM (Accountancy Business Management). As a result, this is her situation,

“nabudlayan ko sang klase sa ABM, ti permi ko ga absent kag ga ka wad-an ko gana!”.

Mismatch choice of track directly affect student’s performance in school. The more the

student find difficult the lessons on mismatch track leads them to become lazy and an

absentee. Moreover, the data shows that laziness, lack of interest, and absenteeism are the

contributing factors for students to escape for their less preferred track due to the fact that

they find difficult to adjust and cope up with the subjects that are hard for them and unfamiliar.

The students’ performance in school directly affected when less interested or preferred

track will be matched. Moreover, just like the situation of Katrina that she was influenced by

her friends to choose this track that’s why her performance in school is poor. Thus, the study

shows that peer pressure and influence is also one of the issue that leads to mismatch track in

senior high school.

11
Advantages of the track that they choose

According to Everjoy D. Jungco, “Dali kami makakita ubra”. It will be easy for her to find

work in the future if the track that she chose is in demand to the society. Because she chose ICT

(Information Communication Technology) there will be plenty of works that her track is

applicable of.

Other options before they choose their track

“Gusto ko mag STEM kasu ga duwa-duwa ko maka college kay basi indi ko kaya”. Joseph

Marata said.

He wants to take STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) but he don’t

think if he can finish it to college.

The personal learning capacity of the student affects the choice of interest, if they think

that STEM is hard, they choose TVL because it is easy for them, and the subject areas are so

different from the academic strand. Moreover, student’s uncertainty is more likely lead to as

well to uncertain performance in school.

12
Benefits of the track that they choose

According to Devonnaire Dionesio, “maka-bulig ko sa pag ubra sa amon balay”.

He will help in renovating their house; the advantages of the track that he chooses gave

him inspiration to finish it. Personal goal of the student motivates them to choose a track that

can give benefits to themselves and to people that supports them.

The same statement that Erica Faith Sorsano stated, she chose TVL because it can help

and benefit her family, there are opportunities in the society that can help achieve her goal.

The students tried to choose a track that their parent would not be able to spend more

money in their schooling; instead they will spend less because it is only a two year course.

13
CHAPTER V

Conclusion

Qualitative research serves as an instrument of the researchers to know people’s ideas,

vision, attitude and perspective towards life. Through this study, the researchers familiarize

and try to listen the difficulties that Grade 11 students in terms of choosing their track in

Senior High School S.Y 2018-2019. This study concludes that the student’s difficulties were

influenced by the factors of their family, peers or classmates, financial capacity, and

demand to the society. There were times that the students become undecided in choosing

their track, but despite of these difficulties they are able to tackle all the lessons on their

chosen track. The support that comes from their family aspire them to overcome all the

challenges and difficulties in their track.
