Objectives:

1. Writes a research title (CS_RS11-IIIc-e-2)

 1a. Describe the guidelines in writing the research
title.
 Describes the justifications/reasons for
conducting the research (CS_RS11-IIIc-e-3)
 States research questions (CS_RS11-IIIc-e-4)

3a. Describe the guidelines in stating

research questions.
What is a research proposal?


The research proposal is an action plan that justifies and

describes the proposed research study.
It is a statement of everything necessary to evaluate the
adequacy of the research before it is conducted.
The students present their research proposal to the committee
that oversees the thesis preparation. Thus, a research proposal is
often a practical necessity giving the student to think through
the issues or concerns before proceeding with the research.
Purpose of research proposal

 To ensure that the research about to be undertaken is

well designed and meets the requirements of the
academic discipline of the school, the academic
institution, and the University that prescribes it.
I. TITLE PAGE
 identifies the important concept of the paper
 provides the primary means for readers to locate an article and
evaluate its relevance to their needs
 The title page gives useful and catchy insights into the entire thesis
or research.
 It is considered as one of the most important parts of the “front
matter” of a thesis or research.
 It carries the meaning of the research into professional community.
 In essence it captures what the research is all about and where and
with whom it is conducted.
GUIDELINES IN WRITING THE TITLE OF A RESEARCH:

 1.The title page should be simple and clear. The shorter
the title the more attractive it appears to them as it
catches the eye of the reading public. (10 TO 12 words
long)
Avoid: DRUG XYZ HAS AN EFFECT OF MUSCULAR
CONTRACTION FOR AN HOUR IN SNAILS OF ACHATINA
FULCIA SPECIES
Better: DRUG XYZ INDUCES MUSCULAR CONTRACTION IN
ACHATINA FULCIA SNAILS
 2.The title should be both concise and informative. It should
capture the essence of what the research is all about and where
and with whom is conducted. Use appropriate descriptive words.

Avoid: EFFECTS OF DRUG A ON SCHIZOPHRENIA

PATIENTS: STUDY OF A MULTICENTER MIXED GROUP
Better: PSYCHOSOCIAL EFFECTS OF DRUG A ON
SCHIZOPRENIA PATIENTS: A MULTICENTER
RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
3 .The title should be written in declarative form. Being
able the title to show bold statement and power. A bold
statement or claim, as the case maybe, gets also the interest
of the reader’s attention.
Avoid: Why does the sun go on shining?
Better: Sunlight Effects with Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms
 The title should be written with some style. However, punctuation
4.
marks should not be placed at the end of the title.
 Avoid: Bullying among High school campuses.
 Better: Bullying among High school campuses
 5. Avoid abbreviations and jargon words (AIDS, DOST…)- can be used
Avoid: MMP EXPRESSION PROFILES CANNOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN
NORMAL AND EARLY OSTEOATHRITIC SYNOVIAL FLUID
Better: MATRIX METALLOPROTEINASE PROTEIN EXPRESSION PROFILES
CANNOT DISTINGUISH BETWEEN NORMAL AND EARLY OSTEOARTHRITC
SYNOVIAL FLUID
6.
 Research Title

 Categories of Research Title

 Nominal
 “Impact of Government Intervention on the socio-economic development of women
professionals in Bicol region”

 Compound
 “Making your research title discoverable: Title plays the winning trick”

 Full Sentence
 “The use of semi-solid nutriments reduces the risk of aspiration pneumonia in tube
feeding”

 A title can contain commas, parentheses, and quotation marks but should never use semi colons (;) and slashes (/)

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
 PARTS of a BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
 1.Topic
 2. Research problem
 3. Justification for the research problem
 4. Deficiencies in the evidence
 5. Relating the discussions to audiences

INTRODUCTION

II. NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY:

 Introduction ≡ introduces the topic and the background or context of the

study.
 Introduction consists of four (4) major parts:
 Part 1: What is the study about? State the main objective of the investigation.
Why do you want to study the topic?
 Part 2: What do other authors say about the topic? Summarize the major
literature/studies conducted on the topic.
 Part 3: What are the gaps in knowledge based on the literature reviewed?
Identify what has not been explored by the other authors.
 Part 4: How do you intend to address these gaps? Who will benefit the study?
Outline your plan to address these gaps.
EXAMPLE:
IIa.OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

 The objectives of the study show the aim of the research
work or the purpose for which the research is being
conducted.
 It states what the research study is designed to achieved;
what it intends to contribute to the state of knowledge in
an academic discipline, to some interest groups,
organizations or communities, or to the society as a whole.
IIb. Research Questions/Statement of
the problem
Problems involve areas of concern to researchers, conditions they want to
improve, difficulties they want to eliminate, questions for which they seek
answers:
Statement of the problem- presents the objective of your study in a
declarative form.
Example: This study (or research) aims to find “(make congruent with title).
Specifically, this research seeks to answer the following questions.
1. What is the mean rating of male and female millenials towards social
media bashing?
2. Is there a significant difference between the mean rating of female
millenials towards social media bashing and their counterparts?
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH QUESTION
1. The question is feasible. (It can be investigated without
spending too much time, energy, money).
Example: How do the students in Baybay City Senior High
School feel about English Speaking Policy?
Not feasible: How would achievements be affected by giving
each student his or her laptop computer to use for a
semester?
A Sample Script

What is (the central phenomenon) for

(participants) at (research site)?

Example
What is the effect of social media on the
study habits of HUMMS students at Pedro
Guevarra NHS?
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION-BUREAU OF CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH QUESTION

 2. The question is clear. (most people would agree as to what the key words
in the question mean)
 Example: How would the teachers feel about special classes for the
educationally handicapped?
 Not clear: Teachers – Age group of teachers, public or private teachers,
location (urban or rural)
 Clear: How would private school teachers in Baybay City feel about special
classes for the neurologically handicapped students?
 3. The
question is significant (it is worth investigating
because it will contribute important knowledge about
human condition).
Three important questions should be asked:
1. How might answers to this research question advance
knowledge in my field?
2. How might answers to this research question improve
educational practice?
3. How might answers to this research question improve the
human condition?
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH QUESTION

4. The question is ethical (it will not involve physical or
psychological harm or damage to human beings or to the natural
or social environment of which they are part).
 Ethics – refers to the questions of right and wrong
 Examples: A research requires a group of high school sophomores
to sign a form in which they agree to participate in a research
study.
 Asking first graders sensitive questions without obtaining the
consent of their parents to question them.
 Requires college students to fill out a questionnaire about their
sexual practices.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD RESEARCH QUESTION

5 .
Research questions often investigate
relationships
Example: Is there a relationship between
motivation and learning? If so, how?
Age and attractiveness?
Activity 2:
Each group will collaborate and write the
title, Statement of the problem/research
questions (objectives)
REVIEW TIME
TRUE OR FALSE:
Put a happy face for true and sad face for false.
1 The title page gives useful and catchy insights into the entire
thesis or research.
 2. The title page should be simple and clear. The shorter the
title the more attractive it appears to them as it catches the eye
of the reading public.
 3. The research question is NOT feasible. (It can be investigated
without spending too much time, energy, money).
 4. The question is significant (it is worth investigating because it
will contribute important knowledge about human condition).
 5. There are 6 parts in writing the background of the study.
Activity 1.
 Each group will brainstorm and use a concept map for
choosing a research topic. Write the concept map in a
manila paper with readable penmanship or PPT
presentation. This will be presented next meeting with the
following information:
