CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In 2013, the Department of Education (DepEd) changed its educational

system into K to 12 Curriculum, adding 2 years to the country’s basic education.

The program required all students to undergo one year of kindergarten, six years

of elementary, four years of junior high school and two years of senior high

school. K to 12 was said to help students in their career preferences and let them

be ready before proceeding to higher education.

The K-12 program (sometimes called P-12) is a basic education program

widely practiced all thought the world is serving children for the 13 years from

kindergarten to year 12 (Department of Education and Training, 2010, Philippine

Senate, 2011). Senior High School curriculum in various parts of the world is

offered to prepare students for work or a university life (The World Education

News and Reviews, 2016).

The much-needed overhaul of the Philippine basic education system

becomes a reality through Republic Act 10533, also known as the Enhanced

Basic Education Act which was passed last May 2013 making the pre-university

and basic education from 10 to 13 years (Congress of the Philippines, 2011).

In Santiago City National High School K-12 Curriculum was held for

almost 4 years already. Still a high number of learning materials, classrooms and

teachers are prevalent in the school’s situation. Limited slots are only made
available for the insufficient materials that are needed by the students. The

development of the students will also be the effect of the institutions’ higher stage

of educational career.

The researchers conducted the study to find out the perception of students

on the implementation of the K-12 Curriculum. This study aims to determine the

problems encountered by the persons who are part of the implementation of the

K-12 Curriculum and the extent of the K-12 Curriculum.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to find out the perception of the grade 12

students on the implementation of the K-12 Curriculum.

Specifically, the research sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents with respect to the following:

1.1. Age

1.2. Sex

1.3. Grade level

1.4. Strand

2. What are the problems encountered by the students who are part of

the K-12 Curriculum?

3. What is the extent of the implementation of the K-12 Curriculum in

terms of:

a. Facilities and Equipment

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE

This chapter provides all related studies and literature that will support

the study of “Perception of students on the Implementation of the K-12

Curriculum”.

Review of Related Studies

Ocampo (2015) emphasized the difficulty in finishing the modules as

presented by the curriculum since not all topics can be covered due to limited

materials and proper facilities in performing a particular science activity, and

lack of time in teaching a particular topic that will tend to pace over just to cover

the module that may result to superficial learning of the students. According to

Romulo (2015), students have hard time to relate the topics they learned from

their previous year level to the present topics. They even have less retention rate

to the previous topic that needs for a teacher to reintroduce and discuss the

concept. Romulo (2015) identified two factors that contributed this major

challenge that she encountered during the course of implementation of the

curriculum. First, lack of materials, especially during experiment, the education

sector proposed to have the highest budgetary partition for the new education

program. It has been identified that since the country is trying to mold the

students to be internationalized when it comes to skills and knowledge it must be

first portrayed to the school for that goal to be attained. Second, teachers have

difficulty in teaching some concept not related to her/his major. This is the first
issue that was raised by the teachers who are not into the other majors of

science. They tend to teach the lesson literally based on what they understand.

And this is a big issue then to the learning of the students. It is a burden for the

teachers to know the concept of the other major (parallel to the lesson) and

discussed it to an alien language. It is expected then that this will give rise to

another difficulty and this time for the part of the students.

The study of Dejarme (2008) suggested that in order for schools and

universities to cope with new innovations, they should keep at pace with the

tempo of societal changes and technological progress. The schools of today

should participate in the educational and social revolution. Thus, the curriculum

in Philippine schools today has to be geared to the rapid societal changes and

the new responsibilities for the new breed of Filipinos. The three most important

sectors of society that give direct input to the improvement of the curriculum are

the academe (institutions), the government, and the industries (both public and

private companies).

Review of Related Literature

According to Maitreya Balsara to the book he created entitled “Principles

of Curriculum Reconstruction”, the changes imply something new and something

different. The degree of newness and differentness is relative. In fact, much of

the prominent change in higher training might better be classified as renovation

of older aspirations than as creation. Whether revamp or creation, academic vary

exhibits several congruent patterns or characteristics in terms of strategy, stages,

participants, and elements. The process of curriculum changes involves four

stages recognition of need, planning and formulation of a solution, initiation and

implementation of the plan and initialization of the change.

According to the book of Mohit Chakiabatti entitled “Value Education:

Changing Perspective”, the training for exercise of discipline in the greater

interest of national integration should not be distinguish just an exercise but

should be directed towards the explicit aspiration of learning the value of

discipline for self-distinction and self-preference of offense.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents a procedure that was carried out in order to address

the problem of the research study. It gave emphasis upon the strategy, research

samples, sampling procedure, and the treatment that was used to assess the

data.

Research Method

The method that we used is a scientific method of observation to gather

non-numerical data, while focusing on meaning-making. This type of method has

4 ways a researcher can go about scientific research method; the case study,

personal experience, introspection, and observational. The way that we used to

the type of this method is an interview.

Respondents

The respondents of this study are the representative of Grade 12 STEM

and HUMSS students from Santiago City National High School. These

respondents shall be chosen by an interview. To protect the identity of the

respondents the information was coded without the respondent’s name from the

study that do not give any information related to the respondents.

Research Instruments

The instrument the researchers used in gathering the primary data would

be an interview questionnaire. The questionnaire was held by the researchers. It

was used as the primary data gathering instrument with focus on the implication

of the implantation of the K-12 curriculum on Grade 12 students along with the

problems encountered on the implementation of the K-12 program.

The type of questions the researchers will be using is about how the K-12

curriculum will affect the Grade 12 students, asking them if it would be effective

or not, and knowing of the point of implementing the new curriculum.

Data Gathering Procedures

In gathering such information about the research study conducted by the

researchers, a permission letter along with the research interview questionnaire

was given to the respondents about the prior actual conduct of the study. After

the practical discussion and permission, the researcher proceeded to

interviewing the respondents. The research study was conducted to have a clear

understanding about the information that was gathered for the purpose of this

study.

Data Analysis

The researchers transcribed the following answer for each question of the

respondents. As a result, the researchers easily interpret and analyzed the data

gathered because the information that was collected was organized by the

researchers. Content analysis was employed by the researcher to analyze the

data collected.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations. The

study gave information to find the answer that sought in this study.

Conclusion

Based on the data gathered of this study, the following conclusions

are drawn:

1. Most of the students are lack of lab equipment, without practical work

they cannot master science concept, knowledge, and nature of the

science.

2. The availability of laboratory equipment, facilities and materials play a

vital role in determining the extent of best laboratory practices that will

ensure acquisition of science process skills and competence in science

concepts by the learners.

3. Laboratory work is an indispensable part of science instruction, and no

effective science education can exist without practical work.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions presented, the following recommendations are

suggested:

For teachers

Effective teaching and learning of science involves a perpetual state of

show and tell teaching with laboratory equipment to ensure that their

students grasp each and every concept thoroughly. You must have the

latest science lab supplies and equipment. To make science interesting

and effective for students and to encourage them to make significant

contributions in the field of physics, biology, chemistry and other streams

of science later in life.

By virtue of equipping themselves with the latest and the advanced

materials and supplies. Schools are able to contribute a lot in the scientific

advances yet to come.

For Parents

Be a role model for learning. Through guidance and reminders, parents

help their kids organize their time and support their desires to learn new

things in and out of school.

Connect what your child learns to everyday life. Have give-and-take

conversations, listening to your child’s ideas instead of pouring information

into their heads. Always support them. Supporting them, that increases

level of positivity and having self-confidence.
