crisis in-general. An Economical Crisis is a situation in which the economy of a country
experiences a sudden downturn initsaggregateoutputorrealgrossdomesticproduct.With
this economical crisis, it affects the people who live in one country. The supply chain
disruptions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak have led to changesinfoodpricesglobally.

attractedconsiderableattention.Giventhissituation,policymakershavebecomeincreasingly
concerned about measuring the magnitude of price shock diffusion on a country’s various
inflationary indicators (Okimoto & Tatsuyoshi, 2017).
Almostallpeople,especiallystudents,aresufferingandaffectedbythecrisis.Some

Overtheyears,thePriceIncreaseofCommoditiesServicesaffectsthesocialbehavior
of society, most especially the students. An example of this is the price increase in
transportationfares.AccordingtoDelaCruz(2022),thepriceincreaseintransportationfares
caused by the increased price of gas affects the people who are commuting every day. In

whereas the highest predicted value is 8.93% in 2022. Using the forecast error criterion,
ARIMAwasidentifiedtobethebestfithavingapredictionofa4.60%inflationratein2018.
Looking forward, a 5.21% inflation rate in the next twelve months is projected(Delima&
Lumintac, 2019). Understanding the demand and supply sources of inflation pressures.
Qualitatively, indicators have pointed to evidence of inflation pressures from both sides in
2018, with the supply factors, by and large, associated with commodity-price shocks and
demand factors deduced from gleaning at the wider non-oil trade deficits seen in the
Philippines. According to Guo et al. (2019), as 2022 started, it explicitly treats the spatial
heterogeneity in food inflation and the differences in consumption expenditure survey and
price datasets at the provincial level or lower. Although some of the poor agricultural
households may have escaped poverty, the poorest of the poor, whether they are in an
agriculturalhouseholdornot,areseverelyaffectedbytheincreasingpriceofcommoditiesin
terms of food and fares (Fujii, 2013).
AccordingtoJared(2022),Commoditiescanbebroadlycategorizedintofourgroups:
agriculture, livestock, energy, and metals. Usually, these commodities are utilized as raw
materialsforproducingfoodorotheritems,whichcanbeconsumedbybothindividualsand
businesses. According to Filippo (2022), the current surge incommoditypricesisaffecting

are affected not only the parents, the businessman/woman but also the students who are
experiencingthisissue.Also,Chen&Liu(2019)saidthattheeffectsofpriceincreasesonthe

services increase, students tend to cut down on non-essential spending and adjust their
behaviortoaccommodatethehighercosts.Thisadjustmentincludesavoidingsocialactivities

students who are struggling financially may have toworkmorehoursortakeonadditional

activities that can result in poor and low social engagement.
AccordingtoCollinsetal.,(2018),priceincreasesincommoditiesandserviceshavea
significant impact on the social behavior of students. The study found that when prices of
essential goods such as food, transportation, and housing increase, students tend to reduce
their social interactions, such as going out with friends or participating in extracurricular
activities. This behavior is a result of the students' need to prioritize theirexpenses, which
leaves little to no room for leisure activities. On the other hand, according to Lamberte
(2009), the price increase of commodities services or inflation could also give a positive
effect on society. By having this kindofproblem, peoplewouldknowhowtobalancetheir

the people living in it. Therefore, there are challenges that Filipinos, especially students,
experience by facing and overcoming this problem.
Poverty
Povertytakesabigpartinthestudentsfacingthechallengesbroughtbytheincreaseof
prices in commodities services. It affects them in every possible way. For instance, most
students are unable to study because of Poverty. But students who live in poverty are less
likely to have growth mindsets. Instead, they have what researchers call a “fixedmindset”
(Thompson & Wilson, 2016).

the crisis period(Hassan, 2001).
Thereareseveralfactorsinvolvedthatplayapartinstudents’performanceasfollows:
health and nutrition, vocabulary, effort, hope-and-growth mindset, cognition, relationships,
and distress. Students in poverty are more likely to be exposed to food with little to no
nutritional value which affects cognitive functioning which, in turn, has adverse effects on
academic achievement. Limited vocabulary also affects academic ability and exposure to
language is less likely in low socioeconomic cases (Pungello et al., 2009).
AccordingtoDadrah(2023),students’mentalhealthisalreadyaffectedbyloneliness,

fares and food, has led students to become more anxious about their spending. Also, it is
difficulttoplanfaraheadoverhowtomanagethefinanceswhenyouareworryingaboutthe
present situation.
According to a study by Hossain & Rahman (2019), an increase in the price of
commodities and services can affect the social behavior of students in various ways. For
example, students may reduce their participation in social activities that require spending
money,suchasgoingtothemoviesoreatingoutwithfriends.Thiscanleadtoadecreasein
their social interaction and mayaffecttheirmentalhealthandwell-being.Additionally, the
price increases may lead to increased stress and anxiety for studentswhorelyonpart-time

may be more likely to experience financial stress and social isolation as a result of price

papers, books, pens, and other things since the prices of these areincreasing.Infacingthe
Price Increase, inflation and rising prices of public transportation fares are associated.
Another part of inflation was the rising of tuition fees and other educational fees.
Varghese (2001) said that in the period of economic crisis, many parents shifted their
children from high-fee-paying private schools or universities to public schools or
universities. This has led to a decline in enrolment inprivatecolleges.Someoftheprivate
schoolsreducedfeestoretainthestudents.Theresultsshowthatsince2003,priceincreases
have led to greater suffering for the poor, particularly the ultra-poor (Son, 2008).
Theeconomiccrisisofrecentyearshashadsignificanteffectsonstudents'financial
situations, which can impact theiracademicperformanceandoverallwell-being.According
to a study by Castelló-Climent (2015), economic recessions can lead toincreasedlevelsof
poverty,unemployment,andinequality,whichcancreatebarrierstoeducationforlow-income
students. They argue that students from disadvantagedbackgroundsaremorelikelytodrop
out of school or fail to enroll in higher education due to financial constraints. Similarly, a
study by Addo et al. (2016), found that student loan debt is a growing concern for many
students, especially those from minority and low-income backgrounds.
Not only the students are affected by this, but also the teachers. According to Atienza

According to an article stated by Varghese (2001), the impact of the crisis on
higher education will depend on the household response to the demand for education,
and public policy response to maintain priority to education. In general, a decline in
household incomes is associated with a decline in the income elasticity of demand for
education. The economic crisis has negative effects which cause loss of employment that will
have an immediate effect (reduction) to their income. Also, households tend to continue to
invest less in education partly due to the fact that they are more worried about survival than
investment. Investments in human capital take a long time to give results, which
households cannot cope with during periods of falling income. The unfortunate situation
is that the impact of the crisis may be in terms of a budget cut which contributes to a decline
in education. Greever (2014) said that poverty has an adverse effect on student performance
and studies have shown that students in poverty are below grade level at much higher rates
and that they generally have poor or average grades. These educational deficits provide a
serious handicap for students in poverty.

Research Design
In conducting this study, the researchers' topic falls under the category of
phenomenology,inwhichthequalitativemethodisthebesttouseforthisstudy.Qualitative
research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-depth understanding of the
experiencesandperspectivesofsocialphenomena,oritisnon-numericaldataingatheringthe

These are the applicable procedures we researchers should follow in gathering the data.
I. Before conducting a study on the respondents, the researchers should first ask
permission from the Principal of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School.
19
II. Following the first (1) procedure, the researchers should also ask permission from the
respondents or participants if it is fine for them to give pieces of information. Apart
from this, the respondents should also fill out a form that they are willing to give their
own information to the researchers.
III. At this time, the researchers are now allowed to interview the respondents that they
choose. In here, respondents are going to be interviewed face-to-face and will be
required to answer the questions that the researchers have gathered.
IV. In addition to the third (3) procedure, the researchers will ask questions that the
respondents are required to answer. The first set will consist of questions about the
challenges and experiences that they are facing in this crisis. The second set will be
about the coping strategies that they will do in overcoming this crisis. And lastly, this
set will consist of questions on what will they suggest that those people, especially
young ones, that are facing this kind of crisis in their lives could do about this.
V. After that, the researchers can finally summarize and organize all the data that they
had gathered. In addition to this, the researchers should also know how to analyze and
interpret the data that they have collected.
1. What kind of challenges do you mostly experience in facing the Price Increase in
Commodities Services?
2. How do students deal with Price Increases in Commodities Services?
3. What are the ways to overcome these situations?
4. How does a Price Increase affect the social behaviour of the students?
5. What are the causes of the Price Increase in Commodities Services?
6. What recommendations can be made to address this concern?

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
I n this qualitative research, a phenomenological study was employed to impactthe
SocialBehaviorofLuisY.FerrerJr.SeniorHighSchoolstudentsregardingthePriceIncrease
of Commodities Services. Interviews were thoroughly conducted on selected Grade 11
Students at Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School. The participants' experiences and
observations helped the researchers to know the struggles and how the Price Increase of
Commodities Services affects Social Behavior.

According to Thompson & Wilson (2016), most students are unable to study because of

what they need because they can’t afford it since the priceisincreasing,“Yungpagtaasng

price increase of commodities services.

including papers, books, pens, and other things since the prices of these are increasing.
In addition to this, many students are unable to go to school because they can not

increasing because of the conflicts that our country isfacing, whichalsoaffectthepriceof

proves that students are the ones who are deeply affected by the price increase of
commodities services that is happening in our country or the world.
The experience of Participant #2 said that it isdifficult for them, because prices have
23
r isen, and they said that their parents' budget will be stretched since it covers their weekly
allowance, their school projects, and more. That’s why it’s challenging for them as a student,
as they didn’t have any earnings yet. Not all students are working students after all.
According to Alip, Ph.D. (2022) said thatinsteadof studying, students have to work in order
to provide for their families and overcome the reality of the world.
And for Participant #3said,“U

he rising costs of goods and services have severalnegative effects on the healthcare
T
of students. Access to necessary healthcare becomes increasingly challenging as costs rise for
individuals, especially for those who don’t have enough budget. According to Oladipo &
Adetunji (2020), exploring the impact of price increases on commodities services can not just
impact academic performances but also social behaviour as well. Students tend to experience
higher levels of stress and anxiety in experiencing this kind of issue.

that if they can still have something to pack for lunch/meal for tomorrow and he also said that
his mom is also suffering from stress or anxiety that affects him also.According to Dadrah
(2023), students’ mental health is already affected by loneliness, anxiety, and stress from
having this kind of situation. The increase in essential costs, such as fares and food, has led
students to become more anxious about their spending. Also, it is difficult to plan far ahead
over how to manage the finances when you are worrying about the present situation.

articipant #4said that when he/she is sick and theydon’t feel like eating, and they think
P
about the price, for example is they want to eat something and they want to buy food but then
they ask the price and they’ll be surprise that it’s now expensive compared to what they use to
buy before which is cheap unlike now.According toHes (2018), it is important to realize that
there are literally hundreds of ways to reduce your spending. For instance, buying clothes,
making sure it's within your budget, and avoiding eating expensive fast food if your budget
can't afford it Another one is to budget properly, which allows us, especially students, to set
aside the money we need for essentials such as groceries, transportation costs, and study fees
or tuition fees.

According to the University of Washington (2016), by overcoming the price increase of
commodities services as a student we should identify and correct our unhealthy coping
strategies.Planningandidentifyingpersonalcontrolareoneofthebestcopingstrategiesthat

Future Researchers.
This research study could help future researchers, especially with a topic just like ours which
is about the price increase of commodities services or inflation in general. This research is
best suited to be a quantitative research, therefore, this research will be a guide and reference
for them in their journey of being a researcher and researching. We wish you good luck!

PARTICIPANT #1: Student
I nterviewer: So, um… andito po tayo ngayon sa interviewnamin about sa aming research
which is the price increase of commodities services: impact to the social behavior of Luis Y.
Ferrer Jr. Senior High School students.
I nterviewer: So, sa aming first question po what kindof challenges do you mostly experience
in facing the price increase of commodities services or ano po yung mga challenges na
kinakaharap mo sa um.. sa isyung ito which is yung price increase, ang example po nito ay
pagtaas ng bilihin at pagtaas ng pamasahe.
I nterviewer: How do students deal with price increasesof commodities services? So, as
articipant: Ano… yung like nagtitipid like kung busognaman talaga ‘pag break time ‘di
P
What are the ways to overcome this situation?
P
ngalang. Pero hindi naman nag-aano yung driver na… Ano nga ulit yung tanong?
Interviewer: What are the ways to overcome this situationpo bukod sa pagtitipid… ganon.
I nterviewer: What are the causes of price increaseof commodities services?
Like gaya dun sa
P
I nterviewer: Sa pang huling question naman po, uh…ano po yung mga… what are the
reccomendations can made about this concern… ano yung mga rekomendasyon na pwede
sa aming research which is ang title po namin is the price increase of commodities services
impact to social behavior of the student of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School. So, ang
aming question po ay what kind of challenges you mostly experience in Price Increase of
Commodities Services?… like for example po ano po yung na-eexperience nyo regarding
38
this, kunwari pag taas ng bilihin, pagkain and sa transportation po yung biglang pag taas ng
pamasahe.
articipant: Mahirap syempre kasi tumaas yung mgapricing, yung budget nung parents mo
P
I nterviewer:How do, number two how do students dealswith the price increase of
example.
P
mo may wifi or ano may laptop di kana mahirapan mag pa load o kaya yung kapag sa
I nterviewer:Ah pangatlo naman po is parang gantorin po yung sa number two what are the
ways po to overcome this situation para..pano nyo po ma-oovercome yung ganitong
sitwasyon.
ganun bond papers ganun.
I nterviewer:And yung pangatlo naman po, pang apatnaman po how do price increase in
commodities services affect the social behavior of a students so paano po sya makaka-apekto
po sainyo as a social behavior of students.
articipant: Minsan nakaka walang gana pumasok kasisyempre wala nga kaming mababaon
P
I nterviewer:Ummm pang lima naman po is what are thecauses of the price increase in
39
yung mga presyo or yung pamasahe po.
articipant:Sa gas kasi syempre yung pinag kukunandati nating ng gas nag karoon sila ng
P
P
minsan yung iba nag susugal o kaya pag kinukurakot nila yung pera di napupunta sa tama
ninanakaw nila yung pera nung gobyerno kaya tumataas.
I nterviewer: And last po is what recommendations canbe made to address this issue..so ano
I nterviewer:Um ang.. andito po tayo for our interviewang title po ng research namin is price
increase of commodities services impact the social behavior of the students at Luis Y. Ferrer
Jr. Senior High School so ready na po ba kayo for first question ummm…unang una po is
what kind challenges do you experience increasing the price commodities services…like for
P
mga luho ko for example kasi nga sa price increases then sa mostly, sa challenges din lagi ako
gumagala but now hindi na dahil sa umm..pag increase nung pamasahe..pwede paki expand
yung question.
40
I nterviewer:Um… what are the ways to overcome thissituation ano po yung mga pwede
P
kailangan sa ngayon. Itabi muna natin kasi pwede naman nating pag ipunan.. pag ipunan mo
muna tsaka mo bilhin tsaka…ah think before buying pag isipan mo muna yung bibilhin mo
41
I nterviewer:What are the causes of price increase commodities services uhm..sa tingin mo po
uhmm..tawag dito, nag karoon tayo ng lacks of fuel naapektuhan yung country natin which is
yung uhmm…parang I know yung Russia kasi is 1 of the provider ng ating fuel so parang ah
I nterviewer.
title ng study po namin is the price increase of commodities services impact to social
behaviour of the student of Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. Senior High School.
42
I nterviewer: What are the ways to overcome these situations?
articipant:Para ma overcome ko yung situations parakasi sakin ano eh, like ano bayan?
P
43
I nterviewer:Um… dito naman po sa five What are thecauses of the Price Increase in
Commodities Services?
like parang nahihirapan din sila ganon.
I nterviewer:So, may isa pa pala tayong question Howdoes a Price increase of commodities
service affect the social behaviour of the students?
stress at depression.
articipant:Pag may sakit ako or ano? Actually kapagmay sakit ako parang ano kasi eh,
P
