Airway management-Testing scenario sheet

Dialogue: You have learnt an approach to newborn resuscitation. I now want you to demonstrate
these skills in a short test scenario which I will lead you through
A full term baby is delivered to you.
Show me the approach to assessment and resuscitation that would use
Actions indicated by boxes must be done
1. Start the clock, switch on heater, Turn on the heater, Call for help etc

2. Dry the baby, remove the wet cloth and cover

3. Assess the baby Colour, Breathing, Heart rate, Tone

“The baby is blue, floppy, not breathing, with a slow heart rate”

4. Airway control Head position (neutral)

5. Choose an appropriate sized face mask

6. Mask inflation Five inflation breaths

7. Check for response Has the heart rate increased? Is there chest movement?

“The heart rate is still slow, No chest movement is seen”

8. Double check head position and apply jaw thrust & Repeat inflation breaths

9. Check for response Has the heart rate increased? Is there chest movement?

“That dose not work, there is no increase in heart rate and no chest movement is seen,
a second person is available to help”

10. Two person airway control with inflation breaths


And/or inspect oropharynx using a laryngoscope& repeat inflation breaths
And/or insert a Guedel airway& repeat inflation breaths

11. Check for a response Has the heart rate increased? Is there chest movement?

“There is chest movement but the heart rate is still very slow”

12. Having confirmed chest movement the candidate should commence cardiac compressions
Candidate must not start cardiac compressions before chest movement is confirmed

PASS FAIL RESET
