1. Introduction
This guide should help the user to gain knowledge about the basic user commands in the main window.

2. Main Window
The main window of KISSsys shows the well known windows menu bar and the following components
(framed red):

1. The Menu bar includes the windows menu and a selection of icons.
2. The Tree Structure is used for the construction of the model. The administrator can change and
build a model in this window. All the different features and elements in the model are defined here.
3. The Templates are “libraries” of different elements to copy in the model.
4. The Schematics Window. The schematic diagram is automatically created based on the model
tree showing the construction and the power flow of the model.
5. The 3D view and other objects appear on the Main Surface. The objects (tables, plots…) from the
tree are shown here.
6. The Messages from the program, while calculations and other evaluations, are shown here.
7. Drag & drop menu for calculations. Single Calculations can be dropped in the Tree Structure.
8. Drag & drop menu for modelling. Single components can be dropped in the Tree Structure.
9. The Statusbar displays information on functions and tasks running in the background.

4. General Usage
4.1 Moving the Tabs and Windows
To move specific windows of your model drag the window by the title bar and place it wherever you want on
the main surface. It is possible therefore to reorganize the appearance of the KISSsys graphical user
interface as you want.

26.04.2016 10 / 12
Figure 4.1 Order of the windows can be changed in the main surface
When tabs need to be repositioned, select tab at the title bar with left-click and drag it to the desired
position. You are able to resize and reorder the windows in main surface. When windows are positioned
freely in the main surface, you may double-click on the title bar to take them back into the structure of the
main window.

4.2 Moving the Elements in the main Surface

User defined tables and elements visible in the main surface can be easily moved and resized as they are
independent elements. Using the buttons in the right corner, tables can be closed, minimized or maximized.

Figure 4.2 Resizing of user defined elements in the main surface

5. Tree Structure and Templates

Tree structure defines what belongs to the model. The structure will depend on the model and there are
several ways to build up a working model. Basically tree structure will include the structure of the gearbox
normally in logical order as in reality (e.g. force elements need to be defined on shafts). In the tree also
connections, boundary conditions and user defined tables, 3DView and other elements are shown.
Elements are normally copied form the templates, but it is also possible to copy inside the tree. Templates
can be modified and saved in Administrator mode. Any existing KISSsys model can be opened as a
template, because the file structure is the same. This allows users to copy existing parts of the different
gearboxes to the new models.

6. Schematic Window
The schematic window shows the structure of the model, orientation of the elements in the model and the
power flow inside the model. Every mechanical component, force element and group is shown in the view.
The view also shows which components are connected. Holding a mouse over a component in schematic
view field with the name of the component will appear in a couple of seconds.

6.1 Power Flow

Different stages of the connections are shown in different colors

Grey line Connection inactive or open (e.g. disengaged gear stage)

Black line Active connection w/o load (e.g. engaged gear but now power)
Red line Active connection with load.
Arrow shows the direction of the power flow
Figure 6.1 Description of the connection colors

6.2 Machine Elements

Machine elements defined in the tree structure are visible in schematic view. When shaft geometry is
defined and positions of the components are placed correctly in the shafts, order of the components in the
shafts can be seen in the schematic view.

7. Messages
All informative messages or possible error messages that occur in KISSsoft calculations during any
calculation are presented in message window. Also KISSsys messages are presented in the same window,
those can be e.g. all function calls and calculations.
