International Examples

How Digital Tools Are Enabling Innovation

Caterpillar uses customer immersion labs to offer customers

for its gigantic mining machines the opportunity to test and
work with three-dimensional, real-time designs of the operator’s
cabin. This gives CAT’s engineers immediate feedback on what
works and what doesn’t, directly from the customer, before
18
anything even goes into production.

International Examples

How Digital Tools Are Enabling Innovation

General Dynamics Electric Boat is using immersive VR

technology to design nuclear submarines. Where once the
carpenters would build wooden mockups of the living spaces in
the subs, EB can now project 3D images of the spaces directly
from the digital design files, walk through them, and make
19
changes as needed.

Local Examples

How Digital Tools Are Enabling Innovation

Accenture uses today's digital tools like online chats &

satellite-enabled video conferences to beam participants from
around the whole into a single "room" – to enable work to
happen anywhere.

Digital Tools and Team Innovation

• Team members might be separated by department, geography
(e.g. we are on OCL now), or their use of different tools

• Studies have shown that when they are disconnected, team

members become misaligned and disengaged → negative
impact to innovate.
• Digital tools enable close collaboration - by connecting people,
information, digital tools, and communications in one convenient
place → unified successful team.

• The resulting digital workplace leads

to engaged, productive members
and an innovative, enduring culture.
