IMPORTANT NOTES

1. The HDT-70 COFDM digital transmitter is completely compatible with the

DVB-T standard included in European Standard ETSI EN300744.

2. It consists of two parts: first, encoder and modulator equipment with

70MHz IF output, which is installed indoors and second, there is the up
converter, which translates IF frequency to RF band. Available frequency
range is from 1.3 to 13.5GHz in 500MHz bands.

3. The HDT-70 can be configured to work as an encoder or as complete

transmitter equipment.

4. The transmitted power varies from 0.4Watt to 2Watt depending on the

up-converter selected.

5. While installing the equipment, the power supply of the up-converters

should be disabled to avoid the risk of short-circuits.

6. The transmitter system must be well chilled. The heat sink in the up-
converter has to be place upwards. Nothing should be left on it. On the
other hand, it is necessary to leave some space at both sides of the rack
equipment for better refrigeration. This is especially important when it is
installed in a rack case.

7. Attention should be paid to the connection between the up converter and

the antenna. The reverse power level should not exceed the 25% of the
transmitted power.

8. When in a transmission, the second audio is not to be used; it should be

disabled, so that the video signal uses the bitrate corresponding to it.
This way a higher quality video signal is achieved.

9. It is not advisable to use a power lead with a cross-section smaller than

that of the lead supplied, since this would cause a drop in the supply
voltage and deficient operation of the equipment.

10. If you wish to install the rack-mount demodulator unit horizontally,

guides should be used, due to the weight of the equipment.

11. Only authorized personnel should open the product and any repair or
warranty will be invalidated if the seals are broken.

HDT-70 Digital HD COFDM Transmitter
USER’S GUIDE V1.1
Chapter 1: Introduction
The HDT-70 transmitter can be used as a transmitter and as an encoder. It
can work with High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) signals.

The HDT-70 transmitter accepts composite video and SDI input signals,
which are MPEG-2 encoded together with input audio signals. The resulting
transport stream is COFDM modulated according to DVB-T standard in
70MHz intermediate frequency. Afterwards, in the up-converter, translates
COFDM modulated signal to the RF frequency in which the signal will be
transmitted. The HDT-70 transmitter also accepts Transport Stream DVB-
ASI input signals, which can be very useful to use the transmitter as a
repeater with no need to decode and encode the signal again.

Figure 1.1 HDT-70 Transmitter double configuration (1+1)

7
HDT-70 Digital HD COFDM Transmitter
USER’S GUIDE V1.1
The HDT-70 digital transmitter consists of two parts: first, there is the
modulator and encoder equipment, installed indoors, which delivers a
COFDM signal in a 70MHz standard intermediate frequency, and second,
there is the up-converter installed outdoors next to the transmitter antenna
which translates IF frequency signal to RF band. The up-converter can
operate in 500MHz band selectable from 1,3 to 13,5GHz. Both equipments
are connected together using triax cable of up to 600m length.

There is a communication channel between them through the I.F. triax

cable. This way, different parameters of the up-converter can be configured
and monitored from the modulator rack unit. Transmission frequency and
transmission power can be configured from the modulator, and the supply
voltage and the temperature in the up-converter can be monitored in the
modulator unit. This makes the equipment’s installation easier.

The HDT-70 encodes in MPEG-2 one video signal together 4 audio signals.
The video signals can be analogue composite video and digital Standard
Definition SDI signal (SD-SDI) or High Definition SDI signal (HD-SDI).The
audio signals can be analogue (2 stereo, 4 mono), digital AES/EBU format
(2 pairs) or digital embedded on the SDI signal (1 group, 4 audio signals).
The resulting transport stream is the MPEG-2 signal video encoded with the
audio signals. The HDT-70 transmitter also has a DVB-ASI input so, an
input transport stream can be transmitted COFDM modulated.

The HDT-70 digital transmitter uses COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency

Division Multiplexing) modulation system (2K mode), which provides a
superior signal robustness and a higher link performance. This technology
provides operators with efficient means to overcome the challenges of NLOS
propagation and mobile channel propagation.

OFDM modulation system distributes the data over a large number of

closely-spaced carriers, 1705 carriers in 2K mode. The data are divided into
several parallel data stream, one for each carrier so, each carrier transports
a lower data rate and the symbol duration is longer. Each carrier is then
modulated with a QPSK, 16QAM or 64QAM scheme.

An OFDM modulated signal, since uses a low symbol rate modulation

schemes (i.e. where the symbols are relatively long compared to the
channel time characteristics) suffer less from intersymbol interference
caused by multipath. So, if one carrier’s information is lost, it would only be
lost a small part of the whole information. As the duration of each symbol is
longer, it is feasible to insert a guard interval between the OFDM symbols,
thus eliminating the intersymbol and co-channel interference.

Besides, in OFDM, the sub-carrier frequencies are chosen so that the sub-
carriers are orthogonal to each other, meaning that cross-talk, interference,
between the sub-channels is eliminated. The orthogonality allows high
spectral efficiency.

8
HDT-70 Digital HD COFDM Transmitter
USER’S GUIDE V1.1
On the other hand, OFDM system is invariably used in conjunction with
channel encoding (forward error correction). The error correction code used
in this equipment is Reed-Solomon coding, which is concatenated with
convolutional coding, and there is and additional interleaving in between the
two layers of coding. Error correcting codes build redundancy into the
transmitted data stream. This redundancy allows bits that are in error or
even missing to be corrected in the receiver.

The European ETSI EN 300744 standard defines the following convolutional

coding rates: 1/2, 2/3; 3/4; 5/6, 7/8. There is a compromise between the
coding rate (signal robustness) and the transmitted bit rate. If the coding
rate in higher the signal transmission is more robust (1/2 the most robust)
but the bit rate that the system is capable to transmit is lower.

Used modulation scheme of each OFDM sub-carrier, QPSK, 16QAM and

64QAM, is also connected with signal robustness and transmitted bit rate.
QPSK is the most robust.

The Up-converter of the HDT-70 transmitter receives through the triax cable
the COFDM signal modulated in IF frequency 70MHz. It translates that
signal and amplifies it. The HDT-70 transmitter’s output power varies from
0.4 to 2Watt depending on the frequency band in which it is going to be
used.

The transmission frequency can be configured manually using the channel

selector in the up-converter (one among 15 previously programmed
frequencies) or remotely from the rack modulator equipment. The up-
converter has a LED in the front panel in order to indicate its working
status. It also has a Lemo connector with a protection plug to connect the
MD-70 external signal meter.

The up-converter is weatherproof, suitable for outdoor work. It is installed

next to the transmitter antenna. The equipment is watertight and resistant
to corrosive and marine environments.

The HDT-70 equipment can be easily operated. The display and the keypad
on the front panel of the modulator rack equipment can be used to
configure many important and decisive parameters, such as the modulation
scheme, Viterbi encoding rate (FEC), and guard interval, as well as up-
converter’s output frequency and transmission power. The equipment also
offers the possibility to monitor the transmission parameters set as well as
presence/absence of warnings and/or alarms.

There is also a UDP/IP Ethernet communication port that allows these and
many other parameters to be controlled and monitored from a remote
station using NetC software.

The equipment can be powered by AC mains or by DC batteries. The

switchover from the mains to batteries is automatic.

9

USER’S GUIDE V1.1
The equipment has inside his own a DC/DC converter, so that it is
completely immune to any fluctuation or noise that the power supply input
may have. This feature is very interesting in mobile installations, as
airplanes, cars and so on.

The up-converter is powered from the encoder&modulator rack unit via the
IF triax cable that connects them together.

Both the rack modulator and the up-converter have optional flight cases. In
the following figure, the flight case for the rack-mount modulator unit is
shown; it can transport two equipments because its size is two rack units.

This equipment is very useful for a wide range of applications, such as the
transport DVB-T signals in ASI format, point to point links, installation in
mobile units, etc.

2.1.1 Power supply

The equipment can be powered by an AC source between 90 and 240V, or

by a DC source from 12 to 36 V.

The mains frequency should be between 50 and 60 Hz.

The AC mains input uses a Neutrik MLC connector. A cable with the required
connector is supplied with the equipment. The AC power connector used in
this equipment has been designed to prevent accidental disconnection. To
extract the connector, pull back the locking clip and rotate the connector, as
indicated on the connector itself.

It is not advisable to use a power lead with a cross-section smaller than that
of the lead supplied, since this would cause a drop in the supply voltage and
deficient operation of the equipment.

The DC power supply is connected via a Neutrik 4-pin male XLR connector
with a safety clip to prevent accidental disconnection

The equipment has inside a DC/DC converter, so that it is completely

immune to any fluctuation or noise that the power supply input may have.
This feature is very interesting in mobile installed on motorbikes, airplanes,
cars and so on.

2.1.2 Video Input / Output (loop)

HDT-70 equipment has two video inputs: analogue composite video input
(PAL/NTSC) and digital video input SD/HD-SDI.

In each video input a loop has been made, Video Out and SDI out. A sample
of the signal that is being transmitted is available for the operator. The
output sample signal is isolated from the main signal, the one that is going
to be transmitted.

This design simplifies the installation of the equipment in an OB truck

because there is no need of distributors. The equipment itself offers a
sample signal.

16
HDT-70 Digital HD COFDM Transmitter
USER’S GUIDE V1.1
Video loop is available at any time and SDI loop is only available when SDI
input is selected

Both input signals use the same connector type, 75Ω insulated BNC, located
on the rear panel of the rack-mount modulator unit and encoder.

SDI digital video input is compatible with SMPTE-259 Standard and with
SMPTE-292M standard (SMPTE-272M/SMPTE-299).

This equipment has a composite analogue video, PAL, and digital video,
SDI, detector. If the equipment does not detect video input signal, it shows
an alarm; the LED next to the ALARM button lights red.

The same happens when the user selects digital video input, SDI, but the
HDT-70 does not detect the presence the digital signal. In this case, the
equipment shows an alarm, the LED related to the ALARM button lights red.

So, the user is able to detect that a video signal is not being introduced or
that a mistake might have been committed with the signal source, with the
connection cables or with the input video signal type (it is wrongly
configured; for instance, analogue input has been selected as video input
and an SDI signal is being introduced or vice versa). Once the equipments
detect video signal presence (if there are no more alarms) the LED of the
ALARM button stops lighting.

2.1.3 DVB-ASI Transport Stream Input/output

The HDT-70 also accepts a DVB-ASI transport stream input signal

compatible with EN50083-9 Standard. This input signal is introduced to the
equipment through a 75Ω insulated BNC type connector.

ASI input is very useful when a DVB-ASI signal delivered by a receiver has
to be transmitted in an intermediate node of a link. Making the receiver-
transmitter connection using ASI signal there is no need to decode and
encode video signals so, quality loss in encode and decode process is
avoided.

At the ASI output connector MPEG-2 encoded input video or SDI signal is
available. So the transmitter can also be used as an encoder.

2.1.4 Audio Input

The HDT-70 equipment can take analogue audio signals, digital AES/EBU
audio signals and digital audio signals embedded in the SD-SDI/HD-SDI
signal.

The equipment has four audio inputs, which are inserted via 3-pin male XLR
connectors on the rear panel of the rack-mount modulator unit. The user
can choose between analogue audio, digital AES/EBU.

Input analogue audio signals should be balanced.

Input analogue audio signal level can be micro or line and it is selectable
from the front panel of the equipment. With micro mode can be enabled the
phantom voltage.

The configurations of the pines for the XLR-3 connectors are listed as
follow:
ƒ PIN-1: Ground
ƒ PIN-2: Signal (+)
ƒ PIN-3: Signal(-)

Embedded digital audio signals, are transported in the SDI video signal so,
these signals are available in the same 75Ω insulated BNC connector used
for SDI.

The SD/HD-SDI digital video input with the four digital audio signals
embedded is compatible with the SMPTE-272M for SD signals and with the
standard SMPTE-299M for HD signals.

2.1.5 Remote control

The HDT-70 transmitter can be controlled and monitored remotely over an

Ethernet connection or over an RS-232 connection

The Ethernet connection is carried out via an 8-pin RJ-45 connector with a
10/100 Base-T network interface. This connector is located on the rear

side between brackets the audio groups which are present on the SDI signal
are displayed. If groups 1 and 3 are present the numbers will be displayed
between the brackets [1_3_].

Figure 3.9 Audio input type: SDI embedded. 1st audio group present

In SMPTE-272M (SD-SDI) and SMPTE-299M (HD-SDI) standards is specified

that in a SDI video signal up to four audio groups can be embedded, each
group is composed of 4 audio channels. So, sixteen audio channels can be
embedded in an SDI digital video signal.

HDT-70 digital transmitter is able to transmit four audio channels, 1 group.

It must be specified which of these groups is going transmitted together
with the video signal. To choose the group to be transmitted ENT button has

3.3 Encoder Options

This menu allows the configurations of the encoder of the HDT-70

transmitter. The options available are organized in submenus as explained
below.

3.3.1 Test Generator

This equipment offers the possibility to transmit a test signal. To configure

the test generator select this submenu with UP and DOWN arrows and press
ENT button. Following options are available in this submenu:

Submenu options:
- Video: ON/OFF. This option activates the video generator, a bars signal
with an icon moving along the screen. This test signal is SD 625i format.
Once it’s active, the signal will be transmitted even if there is another
input signal. If the input signal has to be transmitted the video test
signal generator has to be disabled.
Note: At the beginning of the retransmission the status this parameter
should be tested. It has to be OFF to be able to transmit the incoming
signal.
- Service: Allows the operator to change the name of the service that will
be transmitted. Also the name of the service will be display in the test
video signal
Note: option not available with the current firmware.
- Audio: ON/OFF. This option enables the audio generator. 4 tones of
1KHz and of -20dBFs amplitude will be transmitted one per audio
channel. Once the audio test signal generator is activated it will transmit
the signal even if there are other audio signals at the inputs.
If the input audio signal has to be transmitted the audio test signal
generator has to be disabled.
Note: Option not available with the current firmware

To exit this submenu and return to the previous menu, press MENU button.

30
HDT-70 Digital HD COFDM Transmitter
USER’S GUIDE V1.1
3.3.2 Video

In this submenu the parameters which affect encoder configuration are

explained.

- Profile: 4:2:0 or 4:2:2. Video and SDI signals MPEG-2 encoding

profile.
- Delay (Standard or Ultra Low delay). This latency is the time the
signal needs to go from the HDT-70 encoder input to the HDR-
70/HDR-100 decoder output. This latency is only guaranteed when
the receiver is a HDR-70/HDR-100. Ultra low delay option has 2
frames latency in HD (80ms approx.) and 1 frame latency in SD (45-
54ms).
It is important to know that there is a tradeoff between latency and
signal quality. If the signal latency (doing the signal encoding and
decoding) decreases also does the video signal quality and vice versa.
So, signal quality in super low delay configuration is not as good as in
Standard delay.

3.3.3 Audio

This section the parameters which affect audio encoding explained.

ƒ Channel 1 bitrate: (256, 384Kbps). Configures the bitrate in Kbps.

The higher the bitrate, the better the transmitted audio signal quality.
But, if the bitrate for the audio signals increases the bitrate for the
video signal will decrease and also will decrease the video signal
quality.
ƒ Channel 2: Enabled/disabled status of the pair of audios 2: audio 2L
and audio 2R.
ƒ Channel 2 bitrate: (256, 384Kbps). ). Configures the bitrate in Kbps.
The higher the bitrate, the better the transmitted audio signal quality.
But, if the bitrate for the audio signals increases the bitrate for the
video signal will decrease and also will decrease the video signal
quality.

If just one audio signal is to be transmitted, we recommend disabling the

second audio channel, which is not going to be used. That way, the bitrate
for the video signal increases and so does the video signal quality.

3.3.4 TS parameters

To visualize the transport stream parameters, move to line no.4 on encoder

submenu using UP and DOWN buttons and then press ENT button. The
following parameters will appear:
ƒ Video PID: Video Packet Identifier
ƒ Audio 1 PID: Audio channel 1 Packet Identifier
ƒ Audio 2 PID: Audio channel 2 Packet Identifier
ƒ PMT PID: PMT (Program Map Table) information packet identifier
ƒ PCR PID: PCR (Program Clock Reference) information packet
identifier

USER’S GUIDE V1.1
3.3.5 Output bitrate

This parameter is changeable when the equipment is configured in encoder

mode. This parameter offers the possibility to configure the output birate in
MPEG-2.
When the equipment is configured as a transmitter, the output birate of the
encoder is set by the TPS (Constellation scheme, FEC, guard interval and
bandwidth) of the COFDM signal.
Encoder option is not available with current firmware version.

3.4 Modulator: Manual/ Auto

There are 2 options to configure the modulator HDT-70:

64QAM the less robust modulation scheme.
- FEC: 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. ½ is the most robust and 7/8 the less
robust.
- Guard interval: 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 32
- Bandwidth: 5, 6, 7 or 8 MHz

The transmitted bit rate is determined by constellation scheme, guard

interval, convolutional code, bandwidth (5, 6, 7 or 8MHz) and other COFDM
system specific parameters as Reed Solomon code.

The following tables show the different transmitted bit rate (Mbps)
according to the constellation scheme, convolutional code, guard interval
and bandwidth, as defined in ETSI EN 300744 Standard.

ƒ Input signal: The equipment accepts three input signals: composite

video, SDI and ASI. The user has to select which input signal is going to
be introduced.
If not input signal is detected or if other input signal is introduced a
warning is triggered informing the user of that event. The warning is
displayed in the main screen, input signal indicator blinks. Furthermore,
the Led next to ALARM button lights in red and if ALARM button is
pressed the HDT-70 shows the alarm “input signal no present.”

ƒ Output bitrate low alarm: When the signal to be transmitted is HD 720p

format minimum output bitrate is 8MHz. When the signal to be
transmitted is 1080i format minimum transmitted bitrate is 16Mbps. The
transmitter will have to be configured according to the input signal to be
transmitted.

If the transmitter is not configured according to the requirements of the

HD input signal “Output bitrate low” alarm is triggered. On the main
screen the output bitrate and input type blink. Besides, the Led next to
ALARM button lights in red. When ALARM button is pressed “Output
bitrate” alarm is displayed on the alarms list.

Chapter 5: NetC Remote Control Software

1 Introduction

NetC, Network Controller, is the new equipment remote control software

developed by SVP Broadcast Microwave. This new software lets the user
control multiple SVP machines simultaneously provided they are connected
to the same local area network.

Remote configuration and monitoring of DR-100/HDR-100 series receivers,

DR-70/HDR-70 series receivers and DT-70/HDT-70 transmitters can be
carried out with this new software

Next, installation and operation of this software is described.

2 Installation

To be able to control remotely SVP machines is necessary to install the

software on a computer and then to configure the machines to make
possible their communication with the computer on which the software has
been installed.

Note: This software has been developed for Windows XP Operating system.

The control software application is delivered in a CD together with SVP

equipments. This software is also available on our web site:
http://www.svpbm.com/ing/support.htm. On the web site there will always
be available the latest version of this software.

Installation of this software starts when setup file is selected. Then just
follow installation process.

To control the equipment remotely, the following steps are required:

1. The LED next to the REMOTE button must be lit in green. The
REMOTE button is used to select the remote control mode. When the
LED next to this button is lit in green, the equipment is set for remote
control via the Ethernet link, while if this LED is out, the equipment
can only be controlled locally. To activate o defuse the remote
control, simply press this button.

Figure 2.2.1 Front view of HDT-70 transmitter

45

USER’S GUIDE V1.1
2. When the equipment is set for remote control (the REMOTE LED is lit
in green), the Ethernet communications parameters must be
configured. Go to Setup Configuration Menu, enter Ethernet
Parameters submenu and set the following parameters:

a. Local IP address: this is the IP address of the SVP machine

within the Local Area Network that it is connected to. This IP
address does not have to be fixed.
b. Gateway: This is the IP address of the gateway or router in the
LAN to which the receiver is connected.
c. The subnet mask: depending on the configuration of this mask
and the remote IP address, information packets transmitted by
the receiver will either be transmitted within the LAN or outside
the LAN, via the router.
d. Remote IP: The public IP address of the remote station to
which the SVP machine must be connected. This is the IP
address of the computer where the software is installed on or
the public address of the net where the computer is. This IP
address must be fixed.
e. Port: The communications port to be used for communications
between the machine and the remote station. The router in the
LAN to which the remote station is connected must be
configured so that packets sent to this port are routed to the IP
address configured in point d. This completes the definition of
the connection between the receiver and the remote station.
This last configuration is set in the router’s NAT table (Network
Address Translation).

3 Software Operation

Once the installation is done, we can proceed with the execution of the
software.

The operation of the control software can be divided into two sections:
network configuration and equipment control.

Chapter 6: External meter MD-70

1 Description

The MD-70 external meter is an instrument designed to measure several

status parameters in analogue UCM series up-converters and DCM series
down-converters y and in digital HDR/DR-70 receiver’s down-converters
and in HDT/DT-70 transmitter’s up-converters.

In the up-converters the transmission frequency (MHz), the transmission

power (Watt), the power supply voltage and temperature of them is
measured.

In the down-converters this meter measures received signal frequency

(MHz), signal level (dBm), power supplied by the demodulator and the
temperature in the down-converter.

When the MD-70 meter is connected either to an up-converter or to a

down-converter, the display will show the start-up message (model and
version of the equipment) for a few seconds.

Afterwards, it will detect and display for several seconds the model,
software version and serial number of the equipment the meter is
connected to. Then the MD-70 meter displays the transmission frequency,
output power, power supply and equipment temperature if an up-converter
has been connected. If the meter has been connected to a down-converter
reception frequency, received signal level, power supply and equipment
temperature are displayed. This information is visualized until the meter is
disconnected or the equipment that is connected to is switched off.

When in the up-converter or the down-converter the PLL is unlocked in

frequency, the frequency value blinks in the display of the MD-70.The same
happens when there is a power supply failure in the up-converter or in the
down converter, the value in the MD-70 meter blinks. Equally, if the
temperature in the up converter is higher than 75ºC or lower than -10ºC,
the temperature measurement displayed in the meter blinks.

These measurements provide the user with information to know the status
of the up or down converter at all times, and in case a failure occurs
(temperature or power supply) it will be very easy to identify. This meter is
also useful to install the equipments and to steer the antennas.

This equipment is designed to use it outdoor in extreme conditions. It is

watertight and very robust.

This is an instrument that will help in the installation of the links and will
allow an excellent control of the maintenance parameters.
