1 NETWORK CARD AND DRIVER INSTALLATION

1.1 WINDOWS 95/98 OPERATING SYSTEM

This chapter describes the procedure for installing a network card and components
(drivers) with Windows 95/98 operating system.

1.1.1 INSTALLATION OF NEW NETWORK CARD

After inserting the network card in a free PCI slot, start the system. Windows
automatically detects the presence of a new peripheral installed on the PC and starts the
installation procedure of the relevant drivers:
(if the card is not automatically detected, go to Par 1.1.1)
The first window (Fig.1) which appears when the system is started, displays the name of
the new card installed; select "Next".

1.1.5 CHECKING FUNCTIONING OF THE NETWORK CARD

To check proper functioning of the network card and the drivers installed the ping
command is used. This command allows sending a series of signals to the set card or over
the network to a remote terminal and checking if the correct response is obtained.

Enter the "MS-DOS prompt" environment:

- from the Windows "Start" menu select the items "Programs" and then" MS-DOS
Prompt

- Once the MS-DOS environment has been entered (see figure below) check functioning
of your network card by typing the PING command followed by the IP address of the
network card: ping 128.1.2.10 and press Enter.

COLLEGAMENTI-ing.doc Page 12 of 48
Date of creation 01-07-02 8:33
Last saved 25-07-02 2:15
WOODWORKING MACHINERY

- if the card functions properly after having sent the ping command, the following
messages should appear:

Execution of Ping 128.1.2.10 with 32 bytes of data:

Response from 128.1.2.10: byte=32 duration<10ms TTL=128

Response from 128.1.2.10: byte=32 duration<10ms TTL=128
Response from 128.1.2.10: byte=32 duration<10ms TTL=128
Response from 128.1.2.10: byte=32 duration<10ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 128.1.2.10:

Packets: Transmitted = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% lost),
Approximate time of transmission/reception in milliseconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Mean = 0ms

This means that four packets have been sent to the address IP 128.1.2.10, which
responded correctly each time.
The most significant data is: Lost = 0 (0% lost), which indicates that there have not
been any transmission/reception errors since none of data transmitted has been lost.

However, if the Ping command returns the following messages, it means that the card is
not working properly:

Execution of Ping 128.1.2.10 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timeout.
Request timeout.
Request timeout.
Request timeout.

Ping statistics for 128.1.2.10:

Packets: Transmitted = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% lost),
Approximate time of transmission/reception in milliseconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Mean = 0ms

In this case, out of the 4 data packets transmitted 100% has been lost. The network
card installation must therefore be checked and possibly repeated from scratch.

1.1.6 SHARING OF RESOURCES

The network connections for numerical controls which operate on a PC with Windows
operating system (NC500 and NC1000) are based on sharing resources via LAN.
This chapter describes the steps necessary to set up the PC to share its resources on
the network.
Check that the control PC and the office PC already have the network card installed and
working properly. (see previous chapters)

1.1.7 CONFIGURATION FOR MICROSOFT NETWORK

The procedure which allows making available to other networked users a resource
located on your own PC is called "sharing". Files and where necessary also printers can be
shared. The first thing to do is to make sure that the PC on which you are working is set
up for sharing of resources and access to those located on a remote PC; to this end, check
that the following network components have been installed:

- Client for Microsoft networks

- File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks

To carry out this check and if these components are absent, follow the procedure below:

- from the "Start" menu select ⇒"Settings" ⇒"Control panel"

- select "Network" and then the "Configuration" card

If already present, go to Page 15.

- Ensure that in the "File and print sharing" window, accessible with the "File and
print sharing" button in the "Configuration" panel of the "Network" window, the
item "Activate file sharing" is selected. (The option "Activate local printer sharing" is
required only if a printer is also to be shared).

- Moreover, check that in the "Primary access" field of the "Configuration" panel in
the "Network" properties, the item "Client for Microsoft networks" is displayed".

At this point the PC is ready to share its files and folders with other networked PCs.
From now on each time the system is started, Windows will display a window prompting
entry of a "User name" and "Password". In the "User name" field, type a name of your
choice, while what is written in the "password" field is insignificant (it is recommended to
leave it empty). It is important to always press "OK" and never "Cancel". If Cancel is
pressed, the network is not accessed.

2 XNC NC - OFFICE PC NETWORK CONNECTION

The following procedure describes the steps necessary to configure the PC running
under Windows 95/98/2000 and the XNC control running under Unix operating system.
It is assumed that the PC and the control already have the network card installed and
working properly. If necessary, to consult the procedure relative to network card and
driver installation, refer to Chapter 1 in this document.
All the information regarding IP addresses, name and group are described with default
values and must be adapted to the possibly existing network and therefore obtained from
the network administrator.
If the operating system of the office PC is Windows 2000, some extra steps need to be
carried out compared to a PC running under Windows 95/98. These steps are described in
Paragraph 2.1 below.

2.1 OFFICE PC CONFIGURATION WITH WINDOWS 2000

Windows 2000 is an operating system realised with NT technologies and hence intended
to work as a networked workstation, usually LAN (Local Area Network). This is why
Windows 2000, different from the old Windows 95/98 systems, automatically creates a
LAN connection in the Network and remote connections folder for each network
card present in the PC.
Having said that, we will now describe how to modify the LAN connection created by the
system and establish a connection with the XNC control.

2.1.1 CONNECTION and USER CONFIGURATION

• Open the Network and remote connections folder, selecting the Network
Neighbourhood icon on the desktop with the right mouse button, then select Properties.
• Here you will find the icon of a LAN connection configured by the system (Fig. 1).

NOTE: Originally, the connection created by the system is called ..., but it can be
renamed, for example, to XNC connectionso that it can more easily be recognised.
To do this, select the icon with the right mouse button, then select the item
Rename and type in the new name.
• With the right mouse button select the icon relative to the Connection and in the pull-
down menu which appears select the item Properties (Fig. 2 on the previous page).

directories were selected (different from ..\home\..), the names of the latter must be
entered. Check the \HOME\ directory on the hard disk of the PC and the subdirectories it
contains; the syntax to use to compile the first 4 directories of this table is the following:

/Optix installation directory /d_x + machine name /...

For example, the program directory with a default installation will be the following:

/home/d_xnc.

Programs /home/d_xnc/p_p/prog/
Subprograms /home/d_xnc/p_p/sprog/
Lists /home/d_xnc/p_p/dstn/
Root Directory /home/d_xnc/
Drawings dxf 2D /home/dxf2d/
Drawings dxf 3D /home/dxf3d/
Drawings cid3 /home/cid3/
Remote machine base
dir. (Root)

Remote machine base dir. (Root) "is present only from software version
2.0.0.1. For network connections with XNC NC this field is to be left empty.

- Save the modifications made by selecting from the XNC menu the items:

Edit ⇒ Save

- The XNC settings are now complete. Restart the machine to complete the
configuration.

2.3.1 TESTING THE NETWORK CONNECTION

Before connecting, check that the DNC mode with the NC has been activated:

- Activate the INEDT module by selecting the item XDNC from the Optix software
installation menu (CAD-CAM C.N.I. Informatica ⇒ XDNC)
- To see if the INEDT module is active check through the icon depicting a devil in the
system tray (Start menu bar) of Windows.

In this way the hard disk of the PC is made available to the NC, allowing the NC to
retrieve or download files from/to the PC. The INETD icon can be added to the start folder
in order to activate the DNC mode when Windows is started.

later.

To check correctness of the settings described in the preceding paragraphs, run this
simple test on the control and the PC:

- Open the "Disk Manager" window by selecting the relevant item from the Cni Start
menu of the control or from the Start menu of the PC.
- Select the remote connection as "Source" (i.e. the IP address of the remote card) and
in sequence select the icon relating to the types of files: Programs, Subprograms and
Lists.

- If it is possible to see the various types of files contained in the remote directory, the
remote connection is working properly.

4 NC500 - OFFICE PC NETWORK CONNECTION

This procedure describes the steps necessary in order to make a network connection
between the NC500 control interface and an office PC. The cable to use for the connection
is type CROSS. The NC500 control network connection is made by sharing resources of
two Windows operating systems via LAN. The control itself does not require or need any
kind of specific setting.
It is assumed that the control PC and the office PC already have the network card
installed and working properly. If necessary, to consult the procedure relative to network
card and driver installation, refer toChapter 1 in this document.

4.1 NETWORK CONFIGURATION

The procedure which allows making available to other networked users a resource
located on your own PC is called "sharing" of files and where necessary also printers. The
first thing to do is to make sure that the PC on which you are working is set up for sharing
of resources and access to those located on a remote PC; to this end, the following
network components must have been installed:

- Client for Microsoft networks

- File and printer sharing in Microsoft networks

If these components are lacking, they must be added according to the following
procedure:

- from the "Start" menu select ⇒"Settings" ⇒"Control panel"

- select "Network" and then the "Configuration" card
