SEATWORK NO. 3 - MIDTERM PERIOD – Frictional

Force & Gravitational Force

Answer the following problems.

1. A horizontal force of 140N is needed to
pull a 60-kg box across the horizontal floor
at a constant speed. What is the coefficient
of friction between the floor and the box?

Given: FN = 140 N
m = 60 kg
g = 9.8 m/s2

Formula: µ = FN/mg

Solution: µ = FN/mg
µ = 140/(60)(9.8)
µ = 0.24

2. A force of 500N is just enough to start a

60-kg steel block moving across the wooden
floor. Find the coefficient of static
friction.

Given: FN = 500 N
m = 60 kg
g = 9.8 m/s2

Formula: µ = FN/mg
Solution: µ = FN/mg
µ = 500/(60)(9.8)
µ = 0.85

3. An 85-N object rests on a horizontal

wooden floor. If the coefficient of static
friction is 0.5, how much force is needed to
set the object in motion?

Given: µs = 0.5
FN = 85 N

Formula: Ff = µsFN

Solution: Ff = µsFN
Ff = (0.5)(85)
Ff = 42.5 N

4. Calculate the gravitational force of a

50-kg metal sphere on a 20-kg table 7m away.

5. What is the gravitational attraction

between an 80-kg man and a 30,000 grams dog
if they are 10 meters away from each other?

Given: G(constant) = 6.673×10-11N
