WRITING

The number of spectators in cinemas and theatres has been reduced by half since the
beginning of the century but, suspiciously enough, film industry has seen a rapid increase of its
profit, up to a 40%. What is the truth behind this fact?

To start with, when looking at the amazing technology we have developed in the audio-visual
field as a result of the increasing use of digital devices, there is no doubt cinemas have become
more of a sophisticated place where you can enjoy a film at its maximum potential. Moreover,
new cinemas are specifically designed to enhance your senses and keep you in constant tune
with the movie and the feelings it may transmit. Nevertheless, it seems all these technological
advances do not contribute to the rise of cinemas popularity. In fact, its numbers are
decreasing year by year. It does not seem wrong to state that quality of films may be the main
problem, as well as the industry behind it.

Furthermore, the amount of resources film industry invests on advertising is certainly an

accurate indicator of the situation of actual movies, which for the same reason they can not
rely on its art, value, and quality of interpretation, must be largely financed in a commercial
way in order to keep it profitable. Then again, this attitude shows more of a compromise with
movie profit rather than quality, which may be the main reason each day less people are
interested in watching a new movie, or even find them to be worth their time and money.

In a nutshell, movies are and have been a great way of inspiring people, making them question
everyday life issues and showing new perspectives. Such values shouldn´t be degraded by a
film industry increasingly interested on profits and forgetting about what is more crucial: the
quality and ability to inspire.
