Personal and Academic Achievement Mind Map Reflection – CLC 12

Both my achievements revolve around drama and my time in the studio. Sitting in grade 12 and
realizing much of your high school experience has revolved around this one space and one achievement
can be eye-opening. I’m not even looking to go into acting or theatre – it is just an interest of mine.
Despite drama defining much of my high school life, I have learned more in that room than I ever did in
a math or science class. It helped shape the person I am today. You learn life lessons about people and
the world that no math class can teach you.

I’ve decided to write my reflection around my personal achievement (Drama 10) rather than my
academic achievement. They’re both similar but without my personal achievement, I would have never
signed up for peer mentoring drama 9s. I was not supposed to be in Drama 10. I got placed into the class
because there was a mix-up with my schedule. My counselor said it was between drama and woodwork.
Knowing how clumsy I am I would have hurt myself around the tools – so I chose drama. The first day of
class I turned to my friend and said I was going to hide in the washroom instead of going on stage.

It took a lot of self-growth to put myself out there and enjoy the moment instead of asking myself
“What do they think?” “What if I look stupid?” at the end of the year my drama teacher recommended I
join Theatre Company. And out of school drama class. So, I put myself out there yet again.

In the drama class, you perform to the class and the class only. In theatre company, you perform in a
room of strangers who are paying to watch you. It’s much more intimidating and our first show was
VERY nerve-racking for me. Over time though I came to look forward to all the shows and the
excitement.

Now I’ve gotten over stage fright and public presentations and it has helped me in my everyday life. It
helped me become me with no shame. Taking Drama 10 was a HUGE personal achievement, and I
wouldn’t take back any minute of it. I’m very grateful the school messed up my course schedule in grade
10, otherwise, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
