Introduction
The modern art movement presented
an abundance of possibilities for both
artists and admirers, with numerous
mediums for sculptures being
enhanced during this era. It brought
about a transformation in sculptural
techniques, methods, subjects, and
materials used by sculptors in their
creations.
Transitioning
of Art
Several art movements under the modern
period, such as Cubism, Futurism,
Constructivism, Surrealism, and Dadaism,
contributed to this shift. While aiming to
satisfy the public, the primary objective of
this movement was to experiment and
break free from traditional practices.
Many artworks during this time were
known for being innovative, free-spirited,
figurative, and at times, perplexing.

their functions. The origins of modern art can
be traced back to influential painters such as

REALISM REALISM ART ART
Realism
Realism is a modern art movement that
emerged in France during the 1850s. It was
characterized by the representation of
contemporary subjects in a realistic manner,
rejecting traditional forms of art, literature,
and social organization. Realist artworks
sought to convey an objective and truthful
vision of contemporary life and are recognized
as the first modern movement of art.

Realism
Realism is also known as naturalism or veristic realism, and it encompasses a range of art forms,
including landscape painting, portraiture, and still life. The movement places a strong emphasis
on capturing the details and edges of objects in order to convey an accurate sense of what they
look like in real life. This attention to detail and accuracy distinguishes realism from other art
movements.

Famous realists artists:

Gustave Courbet was a French painter who played a pivotal role in spearheading the
Realism movement in French painting during the 19th century. He is recognized for his
notable artworks such as "Young Ladies of the Village" and "The Stone Breakers".
Winslow Homer was an American artist known for his expertise in landscape painting and
printmaking. He is renowned for his masterpiece "The Blue Boat".
Edward Hopper was a notable American artist who specialized in realism. He was also a
printmaker. Some of his most famous works include "Nighthawks", "Automat", and "Self
Portrait".
What is special about
realism?
Realism is significant because it marked a significant
departure from the romanticism and idealism that
were prevalent in the art world prior to its emergence.
The movement emphasized the importance of
portraying contemporary life in a truthful and
objective manner. Realism paved the way for other
modern art movements, such as impressionism and
expressionism, and it had a profound impact on the
development of art in the 20th century.
