Origin of the Term ''Expressionism''

▲ The word Expressionist was used in the modern sense as earl


y as 1850, its Origin is sometimes traced to paintings exhibit
ed in 1901 in Paris by an obscure artist Julien-Auguste Herve
, which he called '' Expressionismes'' .

▲ In the early 1900's, a movement arose in the Western ar
t World that came to be known as ''Expressionism'' .
▲ Expressionist Artist created works with more Emotional
Force rather than with Realistic or Natural Images. To
achieve this, they distorted outlines , applied strong c
olors, and exagerrated forms . They work more with their
imagination and feelings , rather than with what their e
yes saw in the physical world.
A.) Neoprimitivism

▲ It was an Art Style that incorporated elements from the


native arts of the South Sea Islanders and the wood carvin
gs of African Tribes that surged in Popularity at that time
. Among the Western artists who adapted these elements
was Amedeo Modigliani,who used the oval faces and elongat
ed shapes of African art in both his Sculptures and Paintin
gs.

B.) Fauvism
▲ It was a style that uses bold, vibrant colors and visual dis
tortions. Its name was derived from les fauves (''wild beas
ts''), referring to the group of French Expressionist painte
rs who painted in this style. Perhaps the most known amo
ng them was Henri Matisse.

C.) Dadaism
▲ It was a style characterized by dream fantasies, memory i
mages and visual tricks and surprises. Although the works a
peared playful, the movement arose from the pain that a
group of European artists felt after the suffering brought
by World War I. Wishing to protest against the civilization
that had brought on horrors, these artists rebelled against
established norms and authorities, and against the traditio
nal styles in art. They chose the child's term for hobbyhors
e, dada, to refer to their new ''nonstyle''

D.) Surrealism

▲ It was a style that depicted an illogical, subconscious drea


m world that seemed to exist beyond the logical,conscious,
physical one. Its name came from the term ''super realism''
, with its artworks clearly expressing a departure from rea
lity -- as though the artists were dreaming, seeing illusion
s, or experiencing an altered mental state.

▲ The movement known as social realism expressed the artist's
role in social reform. Artists used their works to protest aga
inst Injustices,Inequalities,Immorality and Ugliness of the Hum

e addressed different issues: War, Poverty, Corruption, Indus
trial and Environmental Hazards and more--in the Hope of ra
ising People's Awareness and Pushing society to seek Reforms.
