2. Discuss your results on composition and abundance of the plankton in the VSU beach
waters.

The main elements of marine phytoplankton are diatoms, dinoflagellates, and


coccolithophorids, which are all found in the algal groups. In the majority of plankton
samples, silicoflagellates, cryptomonads, and green algae are present. Around coasts and
continental shelves, in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans near the equator, and in high latitude
regions, phytoplankton are abundant.
