Abstract

This study is made to know the perception of the grade 11 students about

reducing pollution in aquatic ecosystem, where it’s purpose is to observe the

positive outcome in their perception about reducing pollution in aquatic

ecosystem.

Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, a phenomenology

approach that looks to gather information that explains how individuals

experience a phenomenon and how they feel about it, and conducting a survey

among the participants of the study in which there are 20 participants that

needed to answer the survey questioner. The Researcher finds out that majority

of the respondents agreed that reducing pollution in aquatic ecosystem can

improve the health and sustainability of an ecosystem. Therefore, reducing

pollution in aquatic ecosystem helps us to have a fresh and healthy water.

Key words: Water Pollution, Pollutants, Aquatic Ecosystem, Perception, Water

ii
Introduction

Pollution is not a new phenomenon. In fact, pollution has been a problem

since the appearance of our earliest ancestors. Increasing human populations

have opened the door to more bacteria and disease.(Nathanson, J. 2023) It

became a big issue, that emerged then because of the history of human

activities, including industrialization, agriculture, urbanization, that has led today

to an increase in pollution on aquatic ecosystems, which has led to adverse

effects on the environment and human health. These effects include the loss of

biodiversity, the spread of disease, and the contamination of food and water

sources. As people have become more aware of the impact of pollution on

aquatic ecosystems, there has been growing interest in understanding how

different groups of people perceive pollution and its effects. This understanding is

crucial in developing effective policies and programs to protect aquatic

ecosystems and ensure their sustainability.

Aquatic ecosystems are important for the environment and the global

ecosystem as a whole. Pollution can have a severe impact on these ecosystems,

leading to the destruction of habitats and the decline of populations of aquatic

organisms. Pollution can also have significant impacts on human health. Polluted

water sources can contain harmful chemicals and toxins that can cause illnesses

and diseases, especially if people consume contaminated fish or water.

1
Pollution of aquatic ecosystems is a serious environmental problem that

has detrimental effects on both the environment and human health. Aquatic

ecosystems include freshwater bodies such as rivers, lakes, and wetlands, as

well as marine environments such as oceans and estuaries. Pollution in these

ecosystems can take many forms, including chemical pollution, physical

pollution, and biological pollution.

Water pollution is one the main environmental issues that we are facing,

as more than 70% of the Earth's surface is covered of water.(Solar Impulse

Foundation 2023) When we take water into our bodies, it is used in several ways.

For example for cooling – it helps keep our bodies at around 37 °C, as a waste

disposal medium, as a conductor for nerve impulses, as a component in the

digestion of food, as a solvent in which vital chemical reactions take place.(The

open University 1999-2023) Pollution is a pervasive and pressing issue affecting

aquatic ecosystems worldwide. The contamination of water bodies by pollutants

such as chemicals, nutrients, and waste products has significant impact on the

environment, the economy, and human health. The deleterious effects of

pollution on aquatic ecosystems are diverse, ranging from decreased water

quality to the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

According to World Health Organization WHO that polluted water is water

whose composition has been change to the extent that it is unusable. In other

words it is toxic water that cannot be drunk or used for essential purpose, and

2
which causes diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid that kill more

than 500,000 people in the world every year.(Iberdrola, S.A.2023)

This research seeks to explore perceptions of pollution on aquatic

ecosystems with a particular focus on understanding how these perceptions vary

across different stakeholder groups. By examining the perspectives of diverse

stakeholders, including community members, policymakers, and scientist, this

research aims to identify areas of consensus and divergence in how pollution is

perceived and addressed.

The purpose of this study is to assess the potential risks to human health.

Pollutants that enter aquatic ecosystems can accumulate in the food chain and

ultimately be consumed by humans who eat fish or shellfish. Some pollutants,

such as heavy metals and certain chemicals, can have toxic effects on human

health even at low levels of exposure. And also for us to understand how various

types of pollutants can negatively impact the health and functioning of aquatic

ecosystems.

Research Question

Main objective - The importance of this paper is to assess the potential

risk to human health

 What is water pollution?

 Where does pollution came from?

 What are the water pollutants?

4
Methodology

Research Design

This study is a qualitative research that is associated with a

phenomenology approach that looks to gather information that explains how

individuals experience a phenomenon and how they feel about it. With this

research design we as the researcher will provide a rich, detailed description and

peoples views about water pollution, what is the impact of this kind of

phenomenon and how would they be able to stop and control this phenomenon

to them specially now a days people are aware of what is happening but still kept

ignoring it.

Sampling Method

We use Qualitative method in conducting this study. It is a process of

naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-depth understanding of social phenomena

within their natural setting. It focuses on the “Why” rather than “What” of social

phenomena and relies on the direct experience of human beings and meaning-

making agents in their every day lives(The University of Texas at Arlington

2016 ). Population refers to the individual or subject that is focus in a study. The

researchers choose a sampling of 20 participants, 10 boys and 10 girls. In which

we choose 5 participants of Grade 11 in Holy Rosary Academy to participate in

this study. We choose Purposive sampling which is a non-probability method for

5
obtaining a sample where researchers use their expertise to choose specific

participants that will help the study meet its goals(Statistics by jim 2023). We use

this sample because the researcher is the one who will choose who will be the

the participants that fit to answer the study.

Instrument of the Study

The instrument that the researcher used in this study is in a survey

questioner form in which the participants will have to answer the question that is

about the Perception of pollution in aquatic ecosystem which is has a big impact

to us people specially that the global warming is getting worst. The researcher

picked a 20 participants in all grade 11 of Holly Rosary Academy in which 5

participants will be selected in every section of the school.

The responses of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy

Rosary Academy with regard of defining water pollution is Contamination of

water. Most of the student think that contamination of water is water pollution,

because of water contamination referring to the introduction of harmful or

undesirable substances into water resources, such as rivers, lake, groundwater,

and oceans, which can potentially harm human health, aquatic life, and the

environment. Such as a study of Rachel Carson in her groundbreaking book,

Silent Spring (1962) which she argued about the widespread of chemicals which

was polluting the environment, including water sources which caused

contamination in the water harming the wildlife and human health.

The responses of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy

Rosary Academy with regard of water pollution coming from human activities.

Mostly of the students say that water pollution came from human activities, as for

people have become more aware of the impact of their actions on the

environment. A theory by atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen and biologist

9
Eugene in 2000 in their article “The Anthropocene”, which suggests that human

activities are causing significant changes, including climate change, which further

contributes to water pollution. And as the answers of the Grade 11 Senior High

School students of Holy Rosary Academy, they believe that water pollution came

from various human activities.

Diaz-Cruz , M.S., Barcelo,D.(2009).Antibiotic resistance gene abundances

correlate with metal and geochemical conditions in archived Scottish soils.PLoS

ONE, 5(8),e11097. This study explores the correlation between water pollution

and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil. The findings suggest that human

activities such as the of antibiotics in agriculture and healthcare contribute to the

presence of ARGs in water bodies through runoff and leaching.

gold mining on water pollution, particularly through the release of mercury into

rivers and lakes. It highlights the role of human activity in polluting water

resources through improper mining practices.

Question 3: “What are different types of Pollutants?”

10
Coding Abbreviation Tally

1. Garbage Waste GW 7

4. Water, Land and Air pollution WLA 4

The answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy Rosary

Academy with regard of the different types of pollutants, mostly of the students

answered garbage waste, as for they often see in the environment particularly in

urban areas, where it can accumulate in streets, parks, and other public places.

One theory connected to this idea is the “Broken Windows Theory” proposed by

criminologists James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling on 1982, which suggested

that visible signs of disorder, such as garbage waste which signal a lack of care

for the environment and contribute to more pollution. And the most answered of

the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy Rosary Academy, many

answered that garbage waste pollutant has the most impact to the society.

an overview of waste management practices, including garbage waste , and

discusses the different types of pollutants released during waste

generation,disposal,and treatment processes.

(Vol.26,No.1,pp.92-97). The article of Bogner explores the relationship between

waste management practices and climate change, highlighting the contribution of

garbage waste as a significant pollutant.

Question 4: “Have you observe any changes in the water quality of aquatic

ecosystem due to pollution?”

Coding Abbreviation Tally

1. YES Y 18

2. NO N 0

The answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy Rosary

Academy with regard of the observations in the changes in the water quality of

aquatic ecosystem due to pollution, majority of the students answered yes, for

they have seen waters becoming cloudy or murky, and reducing light penetration,

and has seen plastic garbage floating in lakes and rivers. A scientific concept

“The Sedimentation theory” explained that murky water can occur due to the

increase in sedimentation. And the answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School

students of Holy Rosary Academy, many answered yes for they have seen

changes in the water quality due to pollution.

12
Source-Sink Theory: was originally proposed by Robert H. MacArthur and

Edward O. Wilson in their influential book "The Theory of Island Biogeography,"

published in 1967. The source-sink theory suggests that pollution acts as a

source of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Pollutants originate from various

sources such as industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, or sewage effluents,

which introduce contaminants into the water. These pollutants can negatively

affect water quality by altering chemical compositions, nutrient levels, and overall

ecological balance.

The Threshold Theory, also known as the Threshold Hypothesis or

Threshold Effect, is a concept that has been discussed and applied by various

researchers and scholars in different fields of study. The threshold theory

suggests that water quality degradation occurs once a certain threshold of

pollutant concentration or load is exceeded. Below this threshold, ecosystems

can withstand and recover from pollution impacts. However, once the threshold is

crossed, water quality declines significantly, leading to ecological disruptions,

such as oxygen depletion, algal blooms, or fish kills. This theory emphasizes the

importance of preventing pollutant levels from exceeding critical thresholds.

Question 5: “Have you personally taken any steps to reduce water pollution

or its impact on aquatic ecosystem?”

13
Coding Abbreviation Tally

1. YES Y 18

2. NO N 0

The answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy Rosary

Academy with regard of personally taking steps to reduce water pollution or its

impact on aquatic ecosystem, majority of the students answered yes, for they

already have personally taken steps to reduce the water pollution problem on the

aquatic system. And the answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of

Holy Rosary Academy, many answered yes for they have already taken steps to

reduce water pollution.

Environmental Identity Theory: proposed by Susan Clayton in the late

1990s. Environmental identity theory suggests that individuals who identify

strongly with nature and consider environmental issues as central to their self-

concept are more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviors. Those who

see themselves as environmentally conscious and responsible may take

personal steps to reduce water pollution as a way to align their actions with their

identity and values.

Theory of Planned Behavior: developed by Icek Ajzen, a social

psychologist, in the late 1980s. The theory of planned behavior suggests that

individuals' intentions to engage in a behavior, such as taking personal steps to

14
reduce water pollution, are influenced by their attitudes, subjective norms, and

perceived behavioral control. Positive attitudes towards environmental protection,

social norms that emphasize the importance of pollution reduction, and a belief in

one's ability to make a difference can motivate individuals to take personal action

to reduce water pollution.

Cognitive Dissonance Theory: developed by Leon Festinger, an American

social psychologist. He first proposed this theory in the late 1950s as a way to

explain how individuals strive for consistency in their thoughts, beliefs, and

attitudes. Cognitive dissonance theory proposes that individuals strive to

maintain consistency between their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. When

people become aware of the negative impacts of water pollution and recognize

their own contributions to the problem, they may experience cognitive

dissonance. To reduce this discomfort, they may take personal steps to align

their behaviors with their environmental values, thereby reducing water pollution.

Question 6: “Does reducing water pollution can improve the health and

sustainability of an aquatic ecosystem?”

Coding Abbreviation Tally

1. YES Y 19

2. NO N

15
The answers of the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Holy Rosary

Academy with regard if reducing water pollution can improve the health and

sustainability of the aquatic ecosystem, all of the students answered yes,

because of what they saw of water pollution and its effects on the aquatic

systems, which is the decreasing of the water quality that degrades the water by

introducing harmful chemicals, bacteria, or other pollutants where it can make the

water unsafe for human or animal consumption and reduces the availability of

clean water for other uses. Such as a study of M. Kemp and W.R Boynton, the

“Effects of Water Pollution Reduction on Ecosystem Health and Sustainability: A

Case Study of the Chesapeake Bay”, the study provides evidence that reducing

water pollution can have significant positive impacts on the health and

sustainability of aquatic ecosystems. And as the answers of the Grade 11 Senior

High School students of Holy Rosary Academy, they all believe that reducing

water pollution will have a positive impact and improve the health and

sustainability for the aquatic ecosystem.

Ecosystem Resilience Theory: The foundational ideas regarding resilience

in ecological systems were first articulated by C.S. "Buzz" Holling in the early

1970s. Reducing water pollution enhances the resilience of aquatic ecosystems.

A healthy and unpolluted ecosystem has a greater capacity to withstand

disturbances and adapt to changing environmental conditions. By reducing

pollution, the ecosystem's overall health improves, making it better equipped to

recover from natural or human-induced stresses such as climate change,

invasive species, or habitat destruction.

16
Ecosystem Services Theory: The concept of ecosystem services was first

proposed by economists Robert Costanza, Ralph d'Arge, Rudolf de Groot,

Stephen Farber, Monica Grasso, Bruce Hannon, Karin Limburg, Shahid Naeem,

Robert V. O'Neill, Jose Paruelo, Robert G. Raskin, Paul Sutton, and Marjan van

den Belt in their influential paper titled "The Value of the World's Ecosystem

Services and Natural Capital," published in the journal Nature in 1997. Reducing

water pollution contributes to the preservation and improvement of ecosystem

services provided by aquatic ecosystems. These services include water

purification, flood mitigation, carbon sequestration, and recreational

opportunities. By maintaining clean and healthy water bodies, the ecosystem can

continue to provide these essential services, benefiting both human communities

and the environment.

Conclusion

The conclusion of this study is that humans activity is the reason why

there is water pollution is still happening at the moment. All of the respondents

says that water pollution is a contamination because of human activities and the

billions of garbage that they produce everyday.

The awareness of the students is a wonderful sign that the student are

not just ignore the things is related to water pollution, but the most beautiful thing

17
is that the student have taken the steps to reduce and stop the water pollution to

get worst and get spread through out water reservoir.

As part of our research on the effects of pollution on aquatic ecosystems,

we conducted a survey to gather insights and perceptions regarding water

pollution and its impact. The survey aimed to assess the level of awareness,

concerns, and understanding among respondents about the consequences of

water pollution on ecosystems, particularly in aquatic environments.

The survey consisted of carefully designed questions that covered various

aspects related to water pollution, including its sources, types of pollutants, and

the potential effects on ecosystems. We also sought to understand the

respondents' opinions on the importance of protecting and preserving aquatic

environments.

To ensure a diverse sample, we distributed the survey to a range of

participants, including students, professionals, and members of the community.

The survey was administered either online or through direct interviews,

depending on the preferences of the respondents. The participants were assured

of the confidentiality and anonymity of their responses, encouraging them to

provide honest and insightful feedback.

18
The survey results provided valuable data that contributed to our

understanding of public perceptions and knowledge regarding water pollution and

its impact on ecosystems. We analyzed the responses using qualitative thematic

analysis techniques, identifying common themes and patterns that emerged from

the participants' answers.

Through the survey, we were able to gauge the level of awareness and

concern among respondents about the issue of water pollution. It also shed light

on their understanding of the sources of pollution and the potential

consequences for aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, the survey allowed us to

identify any misconceptions or gaps in knowledge that may require further

education or awareness campaigns.

The insights gathered from the survey not only enriched our research

findings but also provided valuable information for policymakers, environmental

organizations, and educators. By understanding the perceptions and concerns of

the public, we can develop targeted strategies and initiatives to address water

pollution effectively and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our

aquatic ecosystems.

Overall, the survey served as a vital tool in collecting data and

understanding public perspectives on water pollution and its impact on

ecosystems. The findings from this survey, combined with other research

19
methods, have contributed to a comprehensive understanding of the issue and

will aid in the development of informed solutions and strategies for protecting our

valuable aquatic environments.
