Character Analysis

5: You’re going to die

“What are you crying? What's the matter?

It's too awful

What is?

It's terrible.

What's happened?

I'm so sorry.

What? Tell me.

You're going to die

Well. Not immediately I hope.

And I'm going to die.

Yes. One day. Yes. You are going to die. We both are.

And it's just so awful. It's just so sad. I don't see how anyone can live, knowing what's going to happen.”

Character traits: Cold, Realistic, Short-Tempered

Anthony Garcilla is a 45 year old single father who chooses to verbally abuse his teenage son
as a way to deal with his own internal turmoil. He was raised in a household where he was
scolded for showing emotion or asking stupid questions (as a child should have the right to),
and so he ends up an adult who mirrors this childhood trauma towards his son and
perpetuates the cycle of generational abuse.
I made the decision to portray this character as an angry, fed up individual who makes no
time to deal with anyone’s emotions, even his own.
His insistence in the beginning of the text to get his son to open up about the reason why he
is crying shows an actual level of care, that is not immediately apparent to his character. This
is shown by the repetition of a variation of the phrase “What happened?”, which Anthony
repeats 3 times. The fact his son is expressing himself in a confusing manner angers Anthony,
as he feels his son does not trust him enough to tell him what’s wrong. He responds with
cynicism and complete disregard for his sons emotional state. “Yes! One day, yes, you are
going to die. We both are!”. This emotional spat is amplified by the fact he is driving.
14: A Spoonful of Cinnamon (Or Something Else Entirely)
Are you going to do it then?

I don't know

Come on, try it.

Why though? I mean what's the point?

It's just one of those things everyone has to do.

So you know what it's like

So you can say you've done it.

You don't want to die and say you never tried it.

I'm not going to die.

You might.

Have you really done it before

Of course.

Try it.

Try it.

I don't

Don't be a scaredy

I'm not a

Come on then

So what do I do?

You just - close your eyes if you need to - and

No

Why not?

Because.

That's not a reason

Does it hurt?

No not really come on.

ELLIE

So what's the point

It's just a thing

It's fun it's, don't be so

Oh alright.
Okay?

Okay

Okay

Go on then.

Yes.

No. Wait, I

Come on. It's too late to change your mind.

Character Traits: Domineering, Subtle, Opportunistic, Self-Centred

Jessica Knowles is a 16 year old school girl who has found a way to get the attention her
parents never bothered to give her. She made the decision to become a Tik Tok star, and her
content revolves around putting her loved ones in uncomfortable situations. In this case, the
victim is her friend, Ellie. Jessica convinces Emily (the other friend) to help peer pressure
Ellie. From the text we can conclude this is not the first time something like this has
happened, as the characters seem all too comfortable doing something like this to their
friend. Hence why the choice to make Jessica a Tik Tok star as made.
The nature of the text also made us conclude that they were probably young.
Jessica takes her role so seriously as she uses social media as a way to fund her lavish
lifestyle, which she uses to exert a sense of control over her peers and to maintain social
status within the private school they all attend.
