Question 1

North West man arrested for allegedly raping his granddaughters along with two other
minors.

A man in North West was Arrested for allegedly raping four minors. Three of the girls are
related to him and the fourth is a neighbour. Captain Botma reported that the 46-year-old
man had been living with the three alleged victims- his granddaughters aged 9 and 17 and
their cousin aged eight. The fourth girl, who is the neighbour is fourteen years old.

The 17 year old reported to her teacher on Wednesday, 12 May 2021, that her grandfather
has been raping her since she was in grade 2. She also shared that she suspects the same has
been happening to the three other girls.

On Thursday the mother of the 14-year-old neighbour, alleged that her daughter was also
raped by the same suspect. Preliminary investigations were conducted and the 46-year-old
suspect was immediately arrested for the alleged rape of these minors, and is expected to
appear in the Brits magistrate court on Monday, 17 May 2021.

Acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Dintletse Molefe, condemned these incidents


of gender-based-violence and said the police would continue to work hard to ensure that those
responsible were brought to book.

Question 2

South African teen commits suicide after bullied by schoolgirl in viral video.

Grate 10 learner, Lufuno Mavhunga reportedly overdosed on pills after a video of her being
slapped by a classmate went viral. In the video, Lufuno is seen being confronted by two
classmates, where one of the girls signals to the other and then proceeded to slap Lufuno
‘countless’ times.

According to the report, the girl was attacked last Monday, 12 April 2021, after blocking her
perpetrator on various social media sites for sending her threatening messages. Police
spokesperson Brig. MotlafelaMojapelo said Lufuno “reportedly went home in the afternoon
and, on arrival, locked herself in the room and took an overdose an overdose of tablets. She
was apparently found by her mother, lying unconscious and was taken to Siloam Hospital,
where she was certified dead on arrival.” Her attacker, also 15, was arrested on Wednesday,
14 May 2021, and, according to police, will be prosecuted in accordance to the Child Justice
Act of South Africa.

The deceased girl’s brother told The TimesLive that his sister’s name translated to “love,”
and she aspired to become a doctor. “She was a very peaceful person, and she had love, as
her name suggests,” said DakaloMavhunga, 27. “She didn’t fight back when she was being
slapped, she only tried to explain. But the girl didn’t even give her a chance.”

Like many other young people around the world, teenagers in South Africa are struggling
with depression and a sense of hopelessness amid the deadly Coronavirus pandemic. A
counsellor noted that suicidal ideation and attempts in both boys and girls have increased
in South Africa. “Research shows that 23.6% of teens are struggling with feelings of
hopelessness and sadness,”
