Introduction

The proliferation and mainstreaming of pornography over the last 2 decades, especially through
the Internet, have influenced youth culture and adolescent development in unprecedented and diverse
ways (Lofgren-M ¨ artenson ˚ Address correspondence to Dr. Jill C. Manning, P.O. Box 6351,
Broomfield, CO 80021. E-mail: jillcmanning@comcast.net 99 100 E. W. Owens et al. & Mansson,
2010; McNair, 2002; Paul, 2005; Peter & Valkenburg, 2007). ˚ Internet-enabled devices have
indiscriminately allowed people of all ages to encounter, consume, create, and distribute sexually
explicit content, and a growing body of data reveal these phenomena are increasingly common for
adolescents worldwide (Flood, 2007; Haggstr ¨ om-Nordin, Sanberg, Hanson, ¨ & Tyden, 2006; Lo &
Wei, 2005; Wolak, Mitchell, & Finkelhor, 2007). Relative ´ to other media, the Internet is considered a
highly sexualized environment (Cooper, Boies, Maheu, & Greenfield, 1999; Peter & Valkenburg,
2006a), and research has shown significant increases in the number of youth who are intentionally or
accidentally encountering pornographic material online (Mitchell, Wolak, & Finkelhor, 2007; Wolak et
al., 2007).

A study was examined about the effects of pornography on senior high school students in the
Tano North District of the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. It further determined whether senior high
school students watch pornography; how often they watch pornography and the negative and positive
effects of pornography on them. The research technique employed was explorative and a sample size of
300 was used. Simple random sampling was used to sample the participants for the interview.

The study revealed that majority of the students admitted to watching pornography before.
Furthermore, it was observed that majority of them agreed that pornography affects students’ academic
performance negatively and moreover, did not approve of pornography. The study recommended among
other things that government should have the political will to ban the sale and possession of
pornographic materials to students

It is a saddening reality that the Philippines has moved up three spots to tenth place but it isn’t
immediately clear whether it’s for something the country can pride itself over. The tenth spot is for
countries with the highest number of people watching porn, according to one of the most famous
pornographic video sharing and pornography sites on the internet: Pornhub. Of the countries surveyed,
the Philippines was the only ASEAN country to make it to the top ten list.

Other interesting observations were also made regarding viewing trends in the Philippines,
among which is the fact that more Filipino women (38 percent of Pornhub’s Filipino viewers) are
watching porn than anywhere else in the world, and that Filipinos are watching porn on Pornhub for
longer periods of time than anywhere else in the world (at an average of 13 minutes 50 seconds per
viewing session).

Background of The Case

Last February 10, 2021, A certain Grade 11 student sent a pornographic video in the official
Facebook group chat of a certain school. This had alarmed the subject teacher and had notified the class
adviser of that student to tell the student to remove the x-rated video in the class group chat to avoid
corrupting the innocent minds of the other seventy-seven active members of that said group chat. The
subject teacher together with the class adviser and Senior High School coordinator went to the house of
the said student for a home visitation and dialogue with the student and his parents. Unfortunately, the
student who did the posting of the pornographic video in the class group chat had shown no guilt or
accountability to what he did as if it was just an ordinary thing to do. The teachers were alarmed and
continued to reiterate and inculcate in his mind that what he did can affect him and his classmates in a
negative manner and warned him of the consequences that he had to face for his impulsive actions.
This is an alarming situation, an eye opener that the values of students are gradually
deteriorating.
As teachers, it is also our responsibility to take action for this not a petty situation.
These questions had occurred in my mind:
How can the student help himself with his problem of watching pornographic videos as a common
activity?
What was the parents’ response upon knowing and hearing that their son posted a scandalous and
sexual video in the official group chat of the school?
How can the school administrator and teachers help the student with his problem?Does he had
pornographic addiction?
How can the community and local government help in banning pornographic videos in the internet for
easily access of minors?
Body of Analysis

According to Michael 2009, “Pornography has significant effects during all stages of family life.
A cross-sectional survey revealed that 87 percent of Australians aged 15 to 29 years had ever viewed
pornography According to a large survey of American college students, 51 percent of males and 32
percent of females admitted to viewing pornography for the first time before they were 13 years old.”

Quadrana added that, “Pornography can influence a young person's expectations about sex, for
example what young men expect their partners to do and vice versa. It can shape sexual practices, with
studies finding that young people may try performing common sexual acts seen in dominant hetero
pornography.”

Another study by Todd G. Morrison, professor of psychology at the University of Saskatchewan,

and colleagues found that adolescents exposed to high levels of pornography had lower levels of sexual
self-esteem. Based on a national longitudinal survey of 12 to 17 year olds.

Dr. Rebecca Collins et. al. reported that adolescents who viewed more sexual content on
television were more likely to initiate sexual intercourse and progress to more advanced non-coital
sexual activities over the following year. Television that included only talk about sexual intercourse bore
similar results to television that actually depicted sexual conduct.

High adolescent consumption of pornography also affects behavior. Male pornography use is
linked to significantly increased sexual intercourse with non-romantic friends, and is likely a correlate of
the so-called “hook-up” culture. In a meta-analysis of longitudinal and cross-sectional studies covering
twenty two studies, Paul Wright and colleagues reported that pornography consumption—both violent
and non-violent–is associated with verbal and physical sexual aggression. The association held for both
males and females, and for both adolescents and adults.

The use of pornography by adolescents is associated with stronger permissive sexual attitudes
(e.g., premarital sex, casual sex). There is some evidence that exposure to pornography can increase the
likelihood of earlier first-time sexual experience, particularly for those adolescents who consume
pornography more frequently.
Gaps between expectations and reality can produce "sexual uncertainty" about sexual beliefs and
values and may also be related to sexual dissatisfaction, anxiety and fear. The content of pornography
may reinforce double standards of an active male sexuality and passive female receptacle. Both male and
female consumers of pornography had increased levels of self-objectification and body surveillance.

Exposure to pornographic sexual content can be a significant factor in teenage pregnancy. A

three year longitudinal study of teenagers found that frequent exposure to televised sexual content was
related to a substantially greater likelihood of teenage pregnancy within the succeeding three years. This
same study also found that the likelihood of teenage pregnancy was two times greater when the quantity
of that sexual content exposure, within the viewing episodes, was high rather than low.

A significant relationship also exists between frequent pornography use and feelings of
loneliness, including major depression. Frequent pornography consumption alters the brain in ways
similar to the neurological alterations of those addicted to cocaine, alcohol, and
methamphetamine.Viewing pornography can engender feelings of shame: In a study of high school
students, the majority of those who had viewed pornography felt some degree of shame for viewing it.
However, 36 percent of males and 26 percent of females said they were never ashamed of viewing
pornography, giving some idea of the level of desensitization already reached in society.

Although U.S. adolescents indicate their preferred source of sexual information is their parents,
more than half of them report they have learned about intercourse, pregnancy, and birth control
from television, and half of teenage women report they first learned about intercourse from magazines.

A study of 1,300 eight- to thirteen-year-old girls found that, among those who engaged in
“cybersex,” 95 percent of the parents were completely unaware of their children’s
involvement. Compared to adolescents who do not search for pornography online, adolescents who
search for pornography online are about three times as likely to have parents who do not monitor their
behavior at all (or very little). Compared to those who do not seek out pornography, those who seek
Internet pornography are three times as likely to give a poor rating of their attachment to their parent.

Adolescent pornography use is associated with stronger beliefs in gender stereotypes,

particularly for males. Male adolescents who view pornography frequently are more likely to view
women as sex objects and to hold sexist attitudes such as women "leading men on".
Pornography may strengthen attitudes supportive of sexual violence and violence against
women. There is evidence of an association between consuming pornography and perpetrating sexual
harassment for boys.Adolescents who consumed violent pornography were six times more likely to be
sexually aggressive compared to those who viewed non-violent pornography or no pornography.

Sexual preoccupation, compulsive consumption and "addiction" can be associated with the
frequency of viewing pornography and also the purposes of using pornography (e.g., as a way of
relieving negative states). While some of the effects of viewing pornography, such as more permissive
attitudes and beliefs about sex, knowledge about sexual practice and sexual practices themselves may
not be inherently problematic, the most dominant, popular and accessible pornography contains
messages and behaviors about sex, gender, power and pleasure that are deeply problematic. In particular,
the physical aggression (slapping, choking, gagging, hair pulling) and verbal aggression such as name
calling, that is predominantly done by men to their female partners.

Alternative Solutions

These are the proposed solutions which are not immediate cure to the problem but should be done
consistently and hand in hand by the students, teachers, school administrators, parents, community and
other stakeholders like the local government in the said municipality.
Strengthening the Faith
To strengthen the values of our students, parents, teachers and the community should inculcate to the
learners the importance of prayer, meditation and retreat.
 A Life of Prayer
Prayers are a good source of passing the morals and values to the students. They have a power of
creating a pious atmosphere that helps instill certain values such as humility and discipline in the
students. This helps the school children realize the essence of the ethical values. Prayers in school
encourage the students to believe in the value system the school and follow it. Let us teach our new
generation of the essence of communicating to God regardless of religion or practices of faith. For
having faith in a Supreme being helps us overcome challenges like sexual desires and temptations.
 Mindfulness and Meditation as tools to overcome sexual desires
Mindfulness meditation is based on the assumption that our minds have a natural ability to undo
stress, and that this ability is regulated by certain homeostatic mechanisms. These mechanisms are
activated during meditation as individuals get connected with their inner state of affairs by way of
becoming aware of their inner body sensations. For instance, they can become aware of sexual urges
before these urges manifest in the form of thoughts and behaviors. Mindfulness, therefore, acts at a
precognitive level. It also helps clients deal with their strong emotions (cravings and aversions) by using
certain cognitive strategies i.e. understanding every experience in terms of transitoriness and not
identifying with them. This allows clients to become detached from the activity of the mind.
Mindfulness has been used successfully with clients suffering from low sexual desire and arousal
difficulties (Kocsis, 2005) but it can also be used in treating sexual addictions, since traditionally it has
been used successfully in treating cravings of all sorts (www.dhamma.org, 2006).
 Virtual Retreat or Recollection and Surrender every desire to God

A recollection or retreat is intended to be a personal encounter with God often characterized by

meditation, silence, reflection, and prayer.  It primarily seeks to renew faith that may have long been
practiced but not fully internalized so as to bring about the desired positive transformation of every
human being.

The idea is to bring about a spiritual experience which can be understood by children in the hope
that such an experience will encourage positive values and behavior.  Recollections and retreats  have
the same purpose.  The only difference is that the former is usually a day activity while the latter is an
overnight up to a 3-day activity.  For younger students however, an overnight retreat arrangement will
suffice.
During the pre-pandemic period, recollection or retreat is conducted face to face in a place
where there is silence and serenity. I had reminisced way back in elementary and high school when I
was studying in Binalbagan Catholic College, I had experienced having a retreat with my classmates at
Scala Retreat House. When I was a college student in the College of Education in the University of St.
La Salle- Bacolod , I had attended recollection at Balay Kalinungan. Those experiences of retreat or
recollection had honestly helped me develop a greater connection and faith in God and overcome
challenges like avoiding engaging in watching pornographic videos and not doing pre-marital sex.

At present, during Covid pandemic period, retreat or recollection can be done virtually through a
phone call, Facetime, Google meet ,Zoom or any means and ways where there will be a spiritual
connection and personal encounter with God to reflect and meditate from the noises, misconceptions and
distractions at present situation .
Conclusions

Indeed, it takes a village to raise a child. This alarming situation had become an eye opener that
as a village with the same goal of educating the youths’ hearts and minds; we should work together for a
common good of teaching the minds, touching the hearts and transforming the lives of our youngsters
for they are the hope of our motherland. The only treasure that we, the older generation can leave them
behind is the valuing of our faith in God by practicing habitually good values, traditions and cultures of
our country that are deeply rooted to us as Filipinos.

VALUES AND VIRTUES CHALLENGED

I have heard the teachers that “Nagkurogkurog gid ko sang nakita ko ginpost ang video kag wala
ya ginremove. May 77 pa kastudents makakita sa to may pollute ila innocent minds. Biskan Holiday sa
Friday kadtuan to sa ila balay para maistorya.” As educators, we are committed to our passion for
teaching and love and concern to our students’ welfare. It is coupled by patience and understanding by
conducting first an interview or dialogue with the student. I have been in the public school institution for
almost 8 years and I have experienced the worst situations and experiences that quite had lead to
disappointments. But still I surrender everything to God and pray that He will use me as an instrument to
teach minds, touch hearts and transform lives even of those considered as the unlovable. I have faith that
everything has a purpose. Like in Jean Valjean in Les Miserables; His life turns around when Bishop
Myriel of Digne, from whom he steals valuable silverware, tells the police that he has given the treasure
to Valjean. Out of this encounter, Valjean becomes a repentant, honorable, and dignified man. He
becomes kind, a devoted father-figure to a girl, Cosette, who loses her mother, and a benefactor to those
in need. Although a known criminal and a parolee, Valjean yet grows morally to represent the best traits
of humanity. Like Jean Valjean, I have faith that one simple act of goodness and love can transform
unruly students into persons with a beautiful heart. As educators, Let us be a lighthouse to our students
with a mission of transforming lives. We can do these one child at a time by being kind, patient and
understanding to them for God will give us wisdom, strength and courage to fulfill our purpose for His
glory.
