THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This chapter offers details about the nature of the topic under investigation, its suitable
context in relation to the research, or its applicability in the context of earlier studies that
have successfully analyzed the subject.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Pornography movies, photos, and other obscene portrayals that overtly depict sexual
subjects or behaviors in a way that is meant to stimulate people and sate their carnal
urges are referred to as pornography. Since pornography is produced to entertain
viewers and stimulate their imaginations, it is obvious that it cannot be compared to
reality. In the modern era, when technology is rapidly developing, the internet has
emerged as the fastest and most significant pornographic distribution channel. Internet
pornography is a technological means of accessing pornography. Internet porn is sexual
content that can be found on websites, in video files, and in pornographic photographs.
The growth in internet usage has made it simpler to spread and share pornographic
content. Many people, especially young people who spend a lot of time using devices,
can obtain obscene materials that are freely distributed on numerous online platforms.
Pornography viewing has become very common in our culture today, and there are
many reasons why people watch porn. Men watched pornography to help them feel
more sexually aroused than most women did (Attwood et al., 2019). Many people use
pornography in addition to experiencing or assisting with sexual arousal, to relieve
boredom and stress, for social and practical reasons, or due to a lack of emotional and
relationship skills (Attwood et al., 2019; Burtaverde et al., 2021). The risk to one's life
when enjoying pornography excessively is very high. An addiction to watching
pornography can have an impact on one's psychological, emotional, mental, and
physical health. Pornography addicts are more likely to have behavioral issues, less
social contact, a higher prevalence of depressed symptoms, less emotional interaction
with others, and other poor life outcomes. Pornography is a display of fantasy that is
said to have an impact on the brain's pleasure center and alter how someone thinks.
Pornography is intended to raise a person's sex drive and increase the creation of
dopamine, which is a chemical that influences our behavior, memory, and motivation
that drives our activity.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the "Effects of Pornography Addiction on Grade-11

Students of ACLC College of Tacloban" School Year 2022-2023.

Specially, it seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Name

b. Grade and Section

c. Age

2. What could be the reason why the students are addicted to watching pornography?

3. How wide is the risk of pornography addiction in the lives of students in terms of:

a. Psychological aspect

b. Social aspect

4. What are the factors that could help a student to lessen or prevent his or her
addiction in watching porn?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In terms of physical, emotional, mental, and other parts of their thinking, this research
demonstrates the effects of addiction on pornography among grade 11 senior high
students. Many young people view pornography as a source of ideas about the adult
world in terms of sexual behavior. However, pornographic websites solely advertise
themselves as a never-ending source of fun and amusement and offer no cautions
regarding danger or injury. Pornography can lead to profound changes in thinking over
time and promote actions that are detrimental to other areas of the body, just like other
potentially addictive substances and behaviors might. Lastly, pornography does not
support a single-sex ethic or approach. In today's world, most young people are
exposed to pornography at a young age, so this study is an important step to pay
attention to the crisis that pornography brings to people's lives, especially to the
students.

Pursuing this study will serve and give the readers a number of purposes. The
researchers believe that this study will benefit the following:

To the Students - They will be more aware about the effects of watching pornography
in their attitudes, their social interactions to the other people, and especially in their
studies.

To the Teachers - They will give sufficient attention to senior high school students who
watch porn. Therefore, they could approach and educate each high school student
properly and develop activities that will make them understand that watching
pornography is something they need to avoid.

To the Parents - They will guide their children better than before and just like the
faculty, the parents will give more attention to their child/children.

To the Future Researchers - They can use it as a guide if they are studying related
with pornography addiction and how it affects the students. In addition, they can explain
further that there are other effects of pornography addiction in students aside from the
researchers had found out. Lastly, they can get some related studies from this research
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study only aimed to explore the effects of pornography addiction in students. The
researchers will find out the effects of watching pornography on the lives of students
because, as time goes by, the number of students who enjoy pornography is increasing,
especially during this pandemic. The scope of the study is the Grade-11 senior high
school students of ACLC College of Tacloban, SY. 2022-2023.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Theoretical Framework
Figure 1. Theoretical
Paradigm
This study is anchored on sexual
script theory. Pornography
research is greatly influenced
by script theory. These scripts
provide meaning for specific
behaviors in relation to a goal or
desire.
In 1973, Simon and Gagnon
applied script theory to sexuality
research, asserting that sexual
scripts
fall under a category of cultural
scripts to regulate sexual
behaviors. Sexual scripts both
offer
guidelines for appropriate sexual
behavior and experiences, and
link these behaviors to meaning.
Scripts can be thought of as
“blueprints” for sexual conduct;
they allow individuals to
conceptualize
their role in sexual encounters,
and serve to decrease anxiety in
social interaction by enabling
actors to predict and interpret
each other’s behavior. Scripts
shed light on the normative and
sequenced behavior in sexual
encounters that are usually
thought of as romantic and
spontaneous.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Although pornography use is very common nowadays among adults and adolescents
and it is available almost everywhere, some people choose not to view it for different
reasons. A large discovery that researchers have made is that religiosity is a big factor
in why many people do not view pornography. “Generally, organized religions endorse
conservative views regarding sexuality that likely lead to negative attitudes regarding
pornography use” (Maddock et al. 2019). According to Ainsworth-Masiello &Evans,
2019 almost all pornography users use porn to experience feelings of sexual arousal,
relieve boredom or stress, for instructional purposes, and more, pornography does have
many harmful effects on users. Researchers have presented more reasons as to why
adolescents view porn including feeling the need to fit in, perform well sexually, and
more. “Pornography consumption impacts young people's self-esteem and stress
levels”. According to Donovan (2019), “pornography addiction” is defined as the inability
to stop watching pornography. Addiction to it affects work, relationships, and other
aspects of daily life due to the current widespread availability of porn on the internet. In
2018, the World Health Organization(WHO) declared unrestrained sexual behavior a
mental disorder. It refers to the individual’s repeated sexual behavior as a major focus
of their life and neglect of their health and personal care, as well as other interests,
activities, and responsibilities. And, according to a study of men in therapy for
problematic pornography, that lends credence to experts who say the brain’s activity is
the same as shown in people’s addiction to drugs, alcohol, and pornography.

LOCAL LITERATURE AND STUDIES

According to Camilleri et al.
(2021), some of the main
reasons why most students are
addicted to watching
pornography are various mental
illnesses. This includes anxiety,
depression,
and stress that can be caused by
studying and problems in
everyday life. These diseases are
said
to be associated with frequent
viewing of sexual pornography
that affects both sexes. It is
indicated
that mental health problems are
a major contributor to the
widespread increase in students’
viewing
of pornography and the change
in their behavior.
Many people keep their porn
addiction and consumption a
secret and this can be for
different reasons such as feeling
guilty about it, pornography
being a taboo topic in society,
and
because people around them
view it as morally wrong.
People can easily become
addicted to
viewing pornography and
struggle to break free. When
looking at people with a self-
perceived
problematic porn use, it has
been found that many “reported
that their pornography use was
outside
of their conscious control. All
had difficulties curbing,
reducing, or ceasing their
pornography use
when they attempted to reduce
or abstain from viewing”
(Sniewski & Farvid, 2020).

Along with having big effects on emotional health, viewing pornography can easily
reshape a person’s thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs. Viewing pornography can lead to
higher levels of sexual impulsivity, stereotypical gendered beliefs, and higher related
sexual beliefs (Bernstein et al., 2022). When people view certain types of pornography
or different pornographic scenarios, their brains are reshaped to believe that others are
likely to engage in and enjoy porn-like sex (Miller, et al., 2019). People who view large
amounts of pornography also start to believe that acts that are committed in the
pornography they view are okay or not a form of violence (Alhamalawi, 2022). Overall,
viewing pornography has a huge impact on a person’s brain, behaviors, and beliefs.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

The study's research methodology is described in this chapter. The researchers

describe the processes used to collect, present, and analyze the data and information
required to fulfill the study's goals and open-ended questions.

Research Design

In order to conduct the investigation, the researcher will employ the descriptive
methodology. This is intended to compile the statistics and information required to
respond to inquiries on perceptions of the effects of addiction on viewing pornography
among Grade 11 Senior High School Students at ACLC College of Tacloban City. A
fact-finding investigation with a sufficient and accurate interpretation of findings is the
descriptive method design. It places emphasis on what is real, such as current events,
routines, circumstances, or phenomena. It is a technique that is frequently used to
evaluate the validity and reliability of instruments used to determine an individual's
likelihood of success in a certain course of study or job.

Research Locale and Participants

This study was accomplished at ACLC College of Tacloban. The Grade 12 Senior
High School Students of the school year 2022-2023 were the participants in this study.
The total number of respondents needed for this study was identified by the researchers
using stratified random sampling. Stratified random sampling is used to randomly select
samples from different strata of the population. This type of sampling is used when the
population has class stratification. The population of students in each strand of Grade
11 were divided the researchers by the total population of Grade 11 senior high school
students and multiply by thirty percent (30%) of the total population of Grade 11 senior
high school students to get the total number of respondents they need in each strand of
Grade 11 at ACLC College of Tacloban.
