The Celts
The Celts lived in Britain before and after Jesus. We're
going back a very, very long time ‐ two thousand years
ago, in fact.

This is a description of Queen Boudicca by Cassius Dio. He
was a Greek who wrote about History. He lived in Rome.
"She was huge of frame, terrifying of aspect,
and with a harsh voice. A great mass of
bright red hair fell to her knees; she wore a
twisted torc, a tunic of many colours, over
which was a thick mantle, fastened by a
brooch. Now she grasped a spear, to strike
fear into all who watched her."

Queen Boudicca (born around 30 AD)
Queen Boudicca was the wife of the ruler of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe who lived in eastern
England.
She was disliked the Romans.
Why did Boudicca not like the Romans?
After her husbands death, the Romans claimed the Iceni lands. When Boudicca protested she
was beaten and her daughters attacked.
The Romans were also demanding to be paid taxes.
What did she do?
In revenge, Boudicca led an army to attack the Romans
Where did she march to?
She marched her army to Colchester (the capital of Roman Britain.) On the way Boudicca and
her Iceni army were joined by other tribes. They attacked Colchester.
She then led them to London. Boudicca's army caused vast amounts of damage before being
defeated.
There is a famous statue of Boudicca in London which was made hundreds of years after she
lived.
