Robbins Basic Pathology 9th edition

Squamous cell papilloma ( wart ): skin

A) Multiple warty skin lesions in the dorsal aspect of the hand
B) Hyperkeratosis which appears red in color (black arrow), papillomatosis which appears
purple in color (red arrow) and hyperplasia of squamous epithelium (epidermis).

Squamous cell papilloma : skin

Hyperkeratosis, papillary growth pattern of squamous epithelium (epidermis) and
hyperplasia of normal looking squamous epithelial cells.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Skin

Ulcerated fungating tumor mass involving the lower eye lid and
the medial canthus of the right eye.

Squamous cell carcinoma: Skin

This is the histological section of the previous slide showing nests of well
differentiated malignant squamous epithelial cells (thin arrows) with keratin
pearls (thick arrows).

Squamous cell carcinoma: Skin

Two nests of well differentiated malignant squamous epithelial cells (black arrows)
with the formation of keratin pearls in the center (yellow arrows).

Basal cell carcinoma: Skin

Two rodent ulcers (BCC) in the medial canthus and lower eyelid
of the left eye (arrows).

Basal cell carcinoma: Skin

A large advanced BCC (rodent ulcer) in the left temporal area
which has a central red base surrounded by a white border.

the dermis.

Follicular adenoma: Thyroid gland

Well demarcated rounded soft brown nodule (tumor) surrounded by
a whitish capsule (There should be no capsular invasion on
microscopic exam.)

Follicular adenoma: Thyroid gland

The tumor (left side) is separated from the normal thyroid tissue (right
side) by a fibrous capsule (arrow). The tumor consists of closely
packed small thyroid follicles (microfollicles). There is no evidence of
capsular invasion.

Follicular carcinoma : Thyroid gland

The tumor (right side) is surrounded by fibrous capsule (black arrows).
The tumor cells invade the capsule (mushroom like capsular invasion)
(white arrow).

mucosa.

Adenocarcinoma : Colon
Histological section from the colonic mass in the previous slide.
Malignant glandular and tubular structures lined by atypical cells with clear
evidence of invasion of the muscularis properia of the colonic wall.

Hamartoma : Lung
Creamy-white mass, well demarcated from the surrounding lung tissue.
CURRANS ATLAS of HISTOPATHOLOGY

Hamartoma: Lung
Histological section from the lung mass in the previous slide.
The mass is composed of cartilage (thin arrows), smooth muscles (thick
arrow) and glands. All tissues are normally found in the lung.

Carcinoma in situ (intra-epithelial neoplasia): Uterine cervix

Markedly atypical cells disorderly arranged, involving the entire thickness of the
epithelium. There is no evidence of invasion of the underlying tissue with intact
basement membrane.
