Healing and Repair

Granulation Tissue
(Skin)
Burn of the palmer surface of the
hand.
The epidermis has been destroyed
and covered by red granulation
tissue (as a healing process).
Granulation Tissue
Granulation tissue which is a healing tissue, consisting of proliferating blood
vessels or capillaries (angiogenesis), proliferating fibroblasts and many mixed
inflammatory cells mainly macrophages, plasma cells, lymphocytes and
neutrophils within loose extracellular matrix.
Robbins basic pathology 10th edition
Granulation Tissue
(A) Granulation tissue showing numerous blood vessels, fibroblasts and a loose
extracellular matrix containing few inflammatory cells. Collagen is stained blue by the
trichrome stain. (B) Trichrome stain of scar, showing collagen (stained blue) and scattered
vascular channels.

A B
Chronic ulcer: Skin
A. Low power view of chronic skin ulcer with ulcer crater lined by granulation tissue. On
both sides, the epidermis appears normal.
B. High power view of chronic skin ulcer in the stage of early tissue repair ( granulation
tissue) consisting of newly formed blood vessels (capillaries), proliferating fibroblasts
and inflammatory cells within loose extracellular matrix.
Scar

Healing Wound : Cornea

The healed wound in the center is filled by fibrous tissue with fully
mature scar formation and covered by regenerating epithelium
(arrow).
Keloid – Skin
Two large keloids have been formed over the shoulder and upper
chest of a black-colored male. Keloid is an ugly-looking raised
dermal mass of hypertrophic scarring tissue.
Robbins basic pathology 10th edition

(A) Hypertrophic scar.

(B) Keloid. (C) Microscopic appearance of a keloid. There is dense collagen deposition
in the dermis with absence of skin appendages.

Keloid : Skin
Healed wound of skin with keloid formation.
Keloid is characterized by excessive-haphazard collagen deposition
(large pinkish collagen fibers) (arrow) within the dermis forming a
raised mass of hypertrophic scarring tissue.
