With over 2 million Scoville Heat Units, the Carolina Reaper is currently the hottest pepper on the
planet. Ed Currie, a grower, created it. Scoville Heat Units (SHU) range from 1,400,000 to 2,200,000.
Ed Currie, a veteran pepper grower, developed this unique spicy chilli pepper, which is at present
the hottest spice on the planet. It's also known as HP22B pepper. It was over 6 generations old in
2013. Ed created this chilli pepper plant by combining a Red Habanero cultivar with a Pakistani Naga
from the Indian island of St Vincent. Winthrop University tested it at over 2.2 million Scoville Heat
Units (with an average of 1,642,000 SHU). It was bred in South Carolina and tested at over 2.2 million
Heat Units measured in Scoville (with an average of 1,642,000 SHU).
It has a flavour that reminds consumers of a 7 Pot chilli pepper. The Carolina Reaper can attain a
maximum height of 4 feet.
The intensity ranges from 1,401,000 Scoville Heat Units to a scorching 2,201,000 Heat Units
measured in Scoville, making it the hottest chilli pepper in the World right now. It's between 176 and
880 times hotter than a regular jalapeno pepper. Compared to a regular jalapeno pepper, which has
a Scoville Heat Unit rating of around 5,000, the hottest Carolina Reaper is up to 450 times hotter.
That's insanely sexy!
Ghost peppers (also known as bhut jolokia) carry a lot of heat and are one of the original superhot
peppers, but the Carolina Reaper takes it to another level. The hottest ghost peppers have Scoville
Heat Units (SHU) ranging from 855,000 to 1,041,427, making the hottest Carolina Reaper more than
twice as spicy.
Despite the Carolina Reaper's blistering heat, it is pleasantly delicious and sweet. It works well as a
dried powder to provide heat and taste and a sauce or spicy sauce.
This Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce Recipe – The Hottest Damn Hot Sauce I Ever Made — is a must-try.
Despite the "joking" moniker, this tasty sauce improves with age.
It's important to use it carefully because a little goes a long way. To add extra heat to your Thai
foods, toss some into larger pots of chilli, soups, or stews.

No, you won't die if you consume Carolina Reapers or other superhot chilli peppers. However,
capsaicin, the constituent of chilli pepper that makes it spicy, can be overdosed. One would need to
consume more than 3 pounds of reapers to do this. There have been tales of people ending up in the
hospital in life-threatening situations after eating reapers, especially those who have had medical
problems in the past. There's also a story about a man who ate incredibly spicy peppers and burned
a hole in his oesophagus, but this isn't fully true.
The hole was caused by vomiting after eating a burger topped with ghost pepper puree. While it's
true that eating extremely hot peppers can cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, they can't
tear or burn through any of your body parts.
While no peppers have been officially listed as being hotter than the Reaper by Guinness, some have
been claimed to be. For example, the Dragon's Breath Pepper has been reported to have 2,484,584
SHU, but this is most likely a hoax. In addition, Ed Currie's Pepper X has been reported to have a SHU
of 3.17 million.
