Brief description: A blood transfusion is a routine medical procedure in which donated blood is
provided through a narrow tube placed within a vein in the arm.
Purpose: This was given to our patient to raise the level of Hgb and Hct within the normal
range.
1. Secure the consent for Blood To provide a structure for a patient to make
transfusion an informed choice regarding the
indications, risks, possible alternatives, and
benefits of a blood transfusion.
2. Change the present IVF of D5LR 1L to To match the concentration of the blood
PNSS IL because the concentration of the IV fluid is
similar to the blood, the fluid stays in the
intravascular space and osmosis does not
cause fluid movement between
compartments and it flushes the line for
later use.
3. Take the initial vital signs and To detect acute transfusion reactions that
recorded may need immediate investigation and
treatment.
5. Prime the BT set. To remove air from the tubing causing air
embolism.
6. Check for the patient’s identity (e.g To ensure the right blood is given to the
name and birthdate) right patient.
10. Take the vital signs and record them To continuously monitor the patient’s body
every 15 minutes for the 1st hour then reactions to the blood transfusion.
