A disease is any conditon that inerferes with the normal functioning of the body.

Microbes: microorganisms, microscopic living creatures

Pathogen: any organism that causes a disease

Autoimmunce system; the immune system attacks the body, it’s supposed to protect.

Hormonal disease; occur because of the malfunctions of the endocrine system.

Congenital: diseases that occur during development in the mother’s womb.

Nutritional: caused by an improper diet.

Cancer: a condition that results from the runaway growth of the body’s own cells.

Virus: is a molecule of genetic material.

Carrier: A person who displays no symptoms of a disease but harbors the pathogens in his
body and can pass them on to infect others.

Vector: an animal that transmits infection.

STD: sexually transmitted diseases

Vaccine: is a substance that stimulates your body to develop an acquired immunity to a


disease.

Immunity: resistance of a pathogen.

AIDS: acquired immune deficiency syndrome

HIV: human immunodeficiency virus

Retrovirus: type of RN virus that makes DNA copies of its genetic material and inserts these
copies into a hot cell’s DNA.

Antibiotic: substances that are effective in stopping the growth of microorganisms.

Inflammatory response: histamine

Antigen: particular surface molecule

Antibody: work with antigen

Passive immunity: someone receives an infusion of antibodies from someone else.
