the Moodle Dropbox ‘Oral Assessment’ in the ‘Assessment’ tab.

and any other related points. Please make sure to engage with only ONE of the five choices and to provide details
(e.g. who, what, when, where, how, and why).

• You can use the following questions as a ‘guide’ (NOT compulsory to answer all the questions) when structuring your
script/presentation if you wish.

Topics 1-2:
どのレストラン(OR カフェ)にいきましたか。いつそのレストラン(OR カフェ)にいきましたか。だれといっしょにいきまし

(OR *キャラクター *characters)がいましたか。その人(OR キャラクター)はえいが(OR 本、テレビ)の中でなにをしまし
たか。Etc.

The Language Use Guidelines:

● Use a variety of grammar, sentence patterns, expressions and vocabulary that have been introduced in the unit
materials and the Genki 1 Textbook Lessons 1-6. You can also use unlearned language; however, please note that,
like other assessments in the unit, your work is mainly assessed based upon how effectively and appropriately you
apply the LEARNED grammar, sentence patterns, expressions, and vocab in your presentation.
• This is a formal presentation. The level of politeness needs to be consistent throughout. Use the です・でした/ます・まし
た endings consistently throughout your script and video presentation. Please refer to the Genki 1 Textbook Lessons 1-6
regarding the expected formality level.
• Be careful of tense. Use the past tense when describing the past experiences, situations, emotions, actions etc. Use
the non-past tense when describing the current situations and emotions, habitual actions or future plans.

2
• Be descriptive. This means that you need to include adjectives (both affirmative and negative) to describe the
selected topic.
• In your script, try to use the kanji that has been introduced in the unit (Genki Lessons 3-6). You can also use unlearned
kanji if you wish. As your script will NOT be assessed, it’s NOT necessary to put furigana (= kanji reading in hiragana) this
time.
• You may use English for katakana words in your script that you cannot find the correct spellings in the Genki 1
Textbook and the unit materials. Please try to do the followings when using katakana.
1) Ensure to type/spell katakana introduced in the Genki 1 Textbook appropriately by referring to the index
pages in the back of the textbook.
2) Ask your tutorial teachers if you have any questions regarding how to type/spell/pronounce the katakana
word/s you wish to refer to.
3) Put the English translation in the brackets next to the katakana that you are unsure about how to
type/spell/pronounce.
• Be aware that using translation tools can lead to very strange language, so don’t try to use difficult language that
you don’t understand well. Plain language usually communicates your ideas better.
• Do NOT seek help from anyone unrelated to this unit, particularly from native Japanese speakers. They do not know
the language content of the unit and their assistance may make your script incomprehensible to your assessor. You
may seek feedback on individual points, but the script must be written by you. If there is any indication that you did
not write the script yourselves, it may be marked down or may not be graded.

The Presentation Guidelines:

• The presentation should be between 1 minute (minimum) and 1.5 minutes (maximum). We will only assess the first 1-1.5
minutes if your presentation goes longer than 1.5 minutes. Marks may be deducted if your presentation is too short.
• This is an oral presentation. You will be assessed on the clarity of your presentation, including pronunciation, speech
pace and intonation. In other words, you need to pace your presentation to orally communicate your ideas clearly
and effectively, so try not to speak too quickly or too slowly.

3
• This assessment may require you to memorise your script partly, however, the purpose of the assessment is NOT to
assess your memorisation skills, but to assess how clearly and effectively you COMMUNICATE your ideas about the
selected topic. You can refer to your notes briefly if you have to, but if you just read the script throughout the
presentation, you will receive a low mark for the presentation.
• Simple props may be used if you wish, but are not necessary. You will not get marks for use of props, costumes etc.
You must NOT use Power Point slides.
• If you have any concerns about presenting your script orally due to your medical conditions or other issues, please
contact your Tutorial 1 teacher prior to the due date.
• We will have workshops to help you prepare for your presentation in Tutorial 1 classes in Weeks 10-12 (please see the
‘Assessment Preparation Schedules’ section below for more detail). However, due to the limited class time, you need
to practice your presentation outside of class.

The Video Production and Submission Guidelines:

• You need to stand or sit from your video camera screen at an appropriate distance so that your assessor can identify
you and you face as you speak. You are NOT expected to set up a professional camera setting; however, please
ensure that image and sound quality are high enough for your assessor to assess your presentation appropriately.
• The maximum upload file size in the Moodle Dropbox system is 100MB in total. If your video exceeds the limit, you
may need to change video resolution or compress the video file to reduce the file size.
• You must submit one sequence in one video file. Multiple sequences in one video file or multiple video files will be
marked down or may not be graded.
• To find more about the video submission, please see the instructions ‘How to Submit Your Files’ that you can find under
the Moodle Dropbox ‘Oral Assessment’ icon in the ‘Assessment’ tab on Moodle.
• Like other assessments in the unit, the final script must be submitted in PDF format. No other format (e.g. a word
document) will be accepted and assessed.
• Late submission penalty will be applied if the final work is submitted after the due date without an agreed extension/
special consideration. For more detail, please see the rubric for the Oral Assessment below.

4
The Assessment Preparation Schedules:
Week 9: The instructions for the oral assessment will be provided on Moodle in Week 9. Start composing a script draft.
Week 10: You will have time in your Tutorial 1 class to discuss general questions about the assignment and specific
expressions that you wish to use in your script/presentation. The Tutorial 1 teacher will ask you to participate in
class activities and discussions to workshop ideas. The purpose of the activities is to help you to start thinking
about what sentence patters, expressions and vocab you can use to talk about your selected topic.
Week 11: Bring your script draft to your Tutorial 1 class. Your teacher will provide Q&A time on any questions you have
about particular sentence patters, expressions and vocab. They will NOT check the full draft for each student,
but they will answer specific questions that can benefit other students. Refine your script (outside class) based
upon the Q&A time and other class activities and discussions.
Week 12: Your teacher will provide an opportunity for final questions in the Tutorial 1 class. Submit your final script in PDF
format AND your video-recorded presentation via ‘Oral Assessment’ submission Dropbox under the tab of
‘Assessment’ on Moodle by the due date stated above. This video-recorded presentation is individually
marked, but your script will NOT be marked. Your script is an aid to the assessor to understand any parts where
pronunciation is not clear. You will be assessed on what you actually say in the video, NOT in the script.

IMPORTANT: We will NOT check full drafts in email or zoom consultations.
