The CEO of the Autocorp Pte. Ltd, Mr. Peter Tan, would like to purchase five new MS
Windows 8.1 notebook computers for the company. The primary business of the company
is to sell used cars. Peter has found a suitable computer model with the following
specifications from a computer vendor.

In addition to the purchase of computer hardware, Peter has the following questions
pertaining to the system software.

(a) Explain the purpose of loading the Microsoft Windows 8.1 operating system onto the
computer.

(b) Briefly explain any THREE (3) basic functions of Microsoft Windows 8.1 as an
operating system.
(6 marks)

(c) In order to allow the sharing of files in the office, Peter would like to create a local
network to improve the efficiency and productivity of his company. He has heard
about peer-to-peer and client-server network. He would like you to explain the
differences between a peer-to-peer network and a client-server network in the context
of file sharing functions.

(d) If Peter decided to install a client-server network, list FOUR (4) additional hardware
he will most likely need to buy for his network.

Question 4 (20 marks)

(a) Peter saw a promotion by an Internet Service Provider offering a high speed Fibre-
optic Broadband using Fibre-optic cable. Explain what a Fibre-optic cable is and why
Fibre-optic cable is better than the traditional twisted pair wire used for telephone and
data communication.

(b) Peter is concerned about his privacy in cyberspace. Explain to Peter THREE (3)
technologies that may jeopardise online anonymity.
(6 marks)

(c) Peter read about a recent news on cybercrime. He would like to know more about
some of the cybercrime mentioned in the news. You are required to explain the
following crimes:

(i) Phishing attack. (2 marks)

(ii) Keyloggers. (2 marks)

(iii) Denial of Service attack. (2 marks)

(d) List any FOUR (4) security measures Peter can implement in order to protect his
network and computers.

(a) Peter has decided to use MySQL, a relational database for his company’s
Management Information System. The following are two proposed database tables by

(b) Mr. Abu Bakar, a systems analyst, from SingSoft Pte. Ltd., was responsible for
carrying out the systems analysis work for the development of the Management
Information System.

(i) What is systems analysis? (2 marks)

(ii) What are the roles of a systems analyst? (2 marks)

(iii) Mr. Abu Bakar told Peter that he will follow the System Development Life Cycle
(SDLC) approach for system development. He has mentioned the various phases
of SDLC. Peter is interested to know more about the Implementation and Testing
Phase. You are required to briefly explain the key tasks being carried out in the
Implememation and Testing Phase.
